Campgrounds and RV parks near Dugger, IN

Fishing and boating dominate the local recreation calendar. Shakamak State Park's three man-made lakes offer 400 acres of water for fishing and boating, while a family aquatic center provides swimming, and camping, hiking, reservable cabins, and group camps are popular features. Anglers might catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill, and rentals are available for kayaks, canoes, and rowboats, though only electric motors are allowed on the lakes. Paddlers should look at the Greene-Sullivan State Forest, which lies just outside town and consists of former coal-mining lands now managed as public forest with numerous small lakes suitable for kayaking and shore fishing. Families traveling with kids can round out a trip at Fowler Park, a Vigo County park north of the area that features lakes, a swimming beach, hiking trails, a covered bridge, and a pioneer village.

The main camping season in this part of Indiana runs from spring through mid-fall. Fowler Park's campground operates on a warm-season schedule, typically opening in spring and closing in mid-October. Sullivan County Park and Lake follows a similar warm-season schedule with seasonal, monthly, and short-term campers on site. Shakamak State Park, in contrast, is open year round, though pool and aquatic facilities close after Labor Day weekend. Summer is the busiest window, with holiday weekends filling well ahead of arrival. Fall brings cooler nights and beautiful colors in the wooded state park campground, where about two-thirds of the campsites sit in shaded woods. Spring can be wet, with the highest monthly rainfall totals of the year, so RV travelers should plan for muddy sites and check road conditions on forest access lanes. Winter camping is possible at Shakamak but limited: expect reduced services, closed pools, and cold, occasionally snowy conditions. Most private RV parks and county lake campgrounds shut down or shift to limited operations between late fall and early spring.

Sites in the Dugger area are generally rustic to mid-tier rather than resort-style. About two-thirds of Shakamak State Park's campsites sit in a wooded area, offering cool shade in summer and beautiful fall color in autumn. Expect a mix of electric sites, non-electric sites, a smaller number of full-hookup pads, a group camp, plus flush toilets, showers, hot water, and a seasonal camp store. County parks are practical rather than polished. Sites typically include metal fire rings, picnic tables, modern shower houses, water hydrants throughout the campground, and a dump station, with many sites positioned along the lake's edge. Cell coverage is generally usable but not universal in the wooded state park and forest units. Firewood is often sold on site, and travelers should plan on stocking up on groceries in Sullivan, Jasonville, or Terre Haute rather than in Dugger itself, where retail options are limited.
