Campgrounds and RV parks near Hayden, IN

Hardy Lake anchors most water-based recreation in the area. The 741-acre reservoir supports fishing for bluegill, redear, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and striped bass, and it permits water skiing and boating. A swimming beach, hiking trails, and an archery range run through the surrounding state recreation area. Families staying at CERA Sports Park & Campground have on-site access to an aquatics center with a waterslide, an 11-acre stocked lake, mini golf, a go-kart track, disc golf, and a 30,000 square foot sports and fitness center. The park's 300-plus sites also make it a common host for motor coach and camping club rallies. Further afield, Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge draws birders and paddlers, and the historic riverfront town of Madison sits about forty-five minutes south.

Peak camping season in southeastern Indiana runs from mid-May through mid-October. CERA Sports Park & Campground operates seasonally from April through October, while Hardy Lake's Shale Bluff and Wooster campgrounds run through the warm months with reduced services in the shoulder season. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating waterfowl at Muscatatuck, and the wettest weather of the year, with May typically the rainiest month. Summers are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; July highs average in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Sites at Hardy Lake and CERA fill quickly on summer holiday weekends, and Indiana DNR properties require two-night minimums on non-holiday weekends and three-night minimums on holiday weekends. Fall delivers the most stable weather: cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October. Winter is cold with occasional snow, but ice fishing is permitted on Hardy Lake and Weary Traveler stays open year-round for RVers passing through.

Site types vary widely across the area. Weary Traveler offers level pull-through sites over 90 feet long with full hookups including 20, 30, and 50-amp power, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, plus a fenced perimeter, video surveillance, and automated gate. It suits large rigs and travelers wanting a quick, secure overnight rather than a destination stay; there is no office or on-site staff. CERA has over 300 sites, with 252 full-service pull-throughs offering 30 and 50-amp service, water, sewer, three shower houses, and a centrally located dump station. Wooser at Hardy Lake is a primitive, boat-accessible campground with basic facilities, a pit toilet, and a water pump, while the adjoining Shale Bluff campground provides electric sites and a bath house. Expect gravel roads at the state properties, patchy cell coverage near the lake, and mosquitoes in summer. Bring bug spray, firewood from local sources, and an Indiana fishing license if planning to fish.
