Campgrounds near New Salisbury, Indiana
New Salisbury sits in Harrison County in southern Indiana, close to the Ohio River and within reach of two major state properties: O'Bannon Woods State Park and Deam Lake State Recreation Area. Both are managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and draw RV travelers looking for hardwood forest, lake access, and horse-friendly camping.
O'Bannon Woods lies inside the 26,000-acre Harrison-Crawford State Forest and borders the Blue and Ohio rivers, with a large electric campground plus a dedicated equestrian loop at Horsemens Electric - O Bannon Woods State Park. Deam Lake, roughly a half hour southeast near Borden, centers on a 194-acre lake and includes the separate Horse Camp - Deam Lake State Recreation Area for riders.
Smaller private options round out the area. Horseshoe Bend RV Campground and Boat Ramp offers river-oriented sites, Add-more RV Park serves as a straightforward hookup stop, and Louisville North Campground provides a base within short driving distance of downtown Louisville, Kentucky.
Things to do near New Salisbury
The Blue River, Indiana's first designated natural and scenic river, flows through O'Bannon Woods and is popular for paddling and fishing. The park also runs a family aquatic center with slides and pools, plus a nature center and a working pioneer-era hay press barn that families can visit between hikes.
Hikers have miles of day-use trails at O'Bannon Woods, including the Adventure Hiking Trail with backcountry shelters. Deam Lake serves as the southern terminus of the Knobstone Trail, Indiana's longest natural-surface footpath at roughly 58 miles, and its equestrian campground connects to about 80 miles of multipurpose trails in Clark State Forest.
On the water, Deam Lake allows electric trolling motors only and has a swim beach that operates in the warm season. Boat and kayak rentals are available seasonally at the lake.

Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year to southern Indiana, with April typically the rainiest month at the nearest long-term station. Trails can be muddy and the Blue River runs high, which is good for paddling but hard on tent campers. Wildflowers and dogwood peak in April and early May.
Summer is warm and humid with afternoon highs commonly in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. This is peak season for the O'Bannon Woods aquatic center, Deam Lake's swim beach, and boat rentals, and weekend sites at both state properties can fill weeks in advance, especially around the Fourth of July. August is actually the driest month of the year on average.
Fall delivers the most reliable camping weather, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong hardwood color through mid-October. Winter camping is possible: O'Bannon Woods is listed as open year round on the Indiana DNR reservation portal, though the aquatic center, boat rentals, and some seasonal services close after Labor Day and reopen in late spring.
How to book a campsite near New Salisbury
State-park sites at O'Bannon Woods and Deam Lake are reserved through the Indiana DNR's Camp.IN.gov system, which is also accessible via ReserveAmerica. Reservations open up to six months in advance and can also be made for the day of arrival by phone at 1-866-622-6746 or online.
Equestrian loops, including Horsemens Electric - O Bannon Woods State Park and Horse Camp - Deam Lake State Recreation Area, require at least one horse to be present on site. Bookings without horses may be relocated to a regular campground if space allows, or cancelled if none is available.
Private options like Horseshoe Bend RV Campground and Boat Ramp, Add-more RV Park, and Louisville North Campground book directly with the operator by phone or website. For summer weekends and the first Saturday in May, which coincides with the Kentucky Derby just across the river, reserve as early as possible.
What to expect at campgrounds near New Salisbury
State-park campgrounds in the area lean toward electric-only hookups, with modern restrooms, hot showers, and a central dump station rather than full water and sewer at each site. Deam Lake's family campground has 113 electric sites, and its equestrian side adds 63 electric sites with a hitching post plus 36 with a horse stall. O'Bannon Woods lists 234 reservable electric sites in its main loops.
Terrain is wooded and rolling. Some paved pads are narrow or not level front-to-back, so leveling blocks are useful for larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs. Cell coverage is spotty inside both parks, and printed reservation confirmations help at check-in.
A daily or annual entrance permit is required at Indiana state park properties, charged per vehicle with a higher rate for out-of-state plates. Quiet hours apply overnight, and pets must stay leashed.
