Campgrounds and RV parks near Petersburg, IN

Pike State Forest and Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge sit just outside Petersburg and offer fishing, paddling, wildlife viewing, and quiet forest roads. The White and Patoka river corridors are popular for bank fishing and kayaking, with catfish, bass, and bluegill common catches. At Lincoln State Park, visitors can use hiking trails, forested hills, and two lakes, with non-motorized boating, canoe and paddleboat rentals, and a swim beach on Lake Lincoln. The adjacent Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial adds a free history stop for families, and Holiday World theme park in Santa Claus is a common day-trip anchor about five miles from the state park.

Spring brings warming temperatures, blooming redbuds and dogwoods, and higher water on the White and Patoka rivers. Trails can be muddy after storms, and severe weather including thunderstorms and tornado watches is most common from April through June, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts and know the nearest shelter at their campground. Summer is peak camping season across southwest Indiana. Weekends fill quickly at Lincoln State Park and other public campgrounds, humidity is high, and biting insects are active near wetlands and river bottoms. Booking well ahead is essential for holiday weekends. Fall offers the most comfortable RV weather: cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color that typically peaks from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is available but limited. Many private parks reduce services or close for the season, and at Indiana state parks water is typically turned off from November through mid-March or April, with some services scaled back.

Expect a mix of rural private RV parks and forested public campgrounds. Sites near Petersburg tend to be flatter and more open, while Lincoln State Park sits in mature woodland with shaded, sometimes uneven sites. The Lake Lincoln electric loop offers 30 and 50 amp service with water at each site, and there is no full-hookup or pull-through option, so plan for a dump station on the way out. Cell service is generally usable in and around Petersburg but can be spotty deep in Pike State Forest and along the Patoka bottoms. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Petersburg, Jasper, and Washington. State park guests should note the daily gate fee and standard check-in windows.
