The closest campgrounds mix Iowa state parks with private and municipal grounds. George Wyth State Park sits between Waterloo and Cedar Falls and offers electric and non-electric sites, modern showers, restrooms and a dump station. The Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort is a full-service private option next to Lost Island Waterpark, with 50-amp sites and cabins. Wilder Park in Allison is a municipal park with electric and full-hookup sites, and Union Grove State Park to the south provides full-hookup RV sites on a small fishing lake.
Rusty Ridge Campground rounds out the nearby options for renters who want additional private-park availability during peak weekends.
Things to do near Dike
Water and trails drive most trip planning here. George Wyth centers on four lakes, Brinker, George Wyth, Fisher, and Alice Wyth, with fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing on flat water close to camp. The Cedar Valley Trail, a paved regional trail system, runs directly through the park, connecting campers to 80+ miles of trails across Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
For families, the Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort sits directly behind Lost Island Waterpark and adjacent to Adventure Golf and Go Karts, and adds on-site disc golf, a swimming beach, and a mining sluice. Union Grove State Park offers lake swimming and hiking, while Wilder Park adds two fishing ponds, disc golf, mini-golf, pickleball, and a BMX pump track for kids.

The Iowa state park camping season shapes most trips. George Wyth Campground is closed January 1 through March 31, with an off-peak window in April, runs peak from May 1 to October 15, and closes again from November 1 through December 31. Union Grove State Park is closed each year from November 1 through March 31 and accepts reservations April 1 through October 31.
Late May through early September is the busiest window, driven by school breaks, Cedar Valley Trail cyclists, and Lost Island Waterpark traffic. Sites closest to the Cedar River at George Wyth fill quickly during peak season, while fall and winter see much lighter crowds. Mosquitoes can be heavy during warmer months because of standing water in the lake basins.
Winter activity shifts to day use: cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are very popular on the George Wyth trail system, along with fat tire biking. Private grounds like the KOA stretch the shoulder seasons for RV renters.
How to book
Iowa state park sites are handled through the Iowa DNR reservation system, run on ReserveAmerica. The George Wyth campground is 100% reservable; no first-come, first-served sites, and Union Grove operates the same way. Reservations must be made 4 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance, and same-day bookings are accepted until 10 p.m. CST.
Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort books directly through the KOA website, with RV sites, RV sites with patios, deluxe cabins, and tent sites. Wilder Park in Allison takes reservations through RoverPass. For peak summer weekends near the KOA and the state parks, book several months out to secure hookup sites.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of urban-edge and rural camping. George Wyth is considered an urban wildlife sanctuary located between Waterloo and Cedar Falls, so campers are close to grocery stores, breweries, and bike shops, though nearby road and rail traffic add some background noise. Modern restrooms with showers and a dump station provide convenient facilities, and water hydrants are distributed throughout the campground.
Waterloo/Lost Island KOA sites include 50-amp service, water, sewer, cable TV, and Wi-Fi, and check-in is handled inside the on-site convenience store, which also sells fuel and LP. Union Grove offers electric and full-hookup sites and can accommodate larger RVs, though some sites have uneven terrain and may need extra leveling. Wilder Park sites are gravel and grass, and hookups are positioned so an extra water hose or extension cord can be useful.
