Campgrounds and RV parks near Elkhart, IA

Adventureland Park and its adjacent water park are the top family draws, with roller coasters, water slides, and live shows a short walk from Adventureland Campground. Prairie Meadows Casino and Racetrack sits nearby for evening entertainment, and the Outlets of Des Moines and Bass Pro Shops handle rainy-day shopping. Outdoor options center on the Raccoon River corridor at Walnut Woods State Park, where visitors can hike wooded bottomland trails along the Raccoon River, fish from the riverbank, or launch a canoe from the boat ramp. The park has recorded over 90 bird species, including waterfowl and songbirds. The Iowa State Fairgrounds in east Des Moines hosts the state fair each August plus concerts and events through the year.

The prime RV window runs from late spring through mid-fall. Adventureland Campground is open to the public from May through the end of October, aligned with the theme-park season, while Walnut Woods State Park treats May 1 through October 15 as its peak period. Summer weekends around the Iowa State Fair in August book up early, and campgrounds close to Adventureland fill quickly during school breaks. Spring brings thunderstorms and the possibility of Raccoon River flooding at Walnut Woods, where the campground sits on low ground near the river and can be affected by flooding after heavy rains. Fall is drier and quieter, with cool nights and good foliage along the river trails through October. Winter camping is limited but not impossible. Walnut Woods State Park accepts reservations year-round, and Griff's Valley View operates all year with reservations required, though modern conveniences such as water, flush toilets, and shower buildings are closed at Iowa state parks during the winter months.

Sites at the private parks are typically paved or concrete with 30 and 50 amp service and full water, sewer, and electric hookups. Griff's Valley View has 142 sites, is RVs only with a 70-foot maximum length, and offers 21 pull-throughs and full hookups on every site. Adventureland offers full water, electric, and sewer at each RV site, with non-electric tent sites available. Walnut Woods has electric sites and 8 full-hookup sites, with modern restrooms and a sanitary dump station but no showers. Expect close-set sites at Walnut Woods and Adventureland, busy traffic near the theme park in summer, and mosquitoes near the Raccoon River after wet stretches. Cell coverage across the metro is strong, and grocery, propane, and dump-station access is straightforward from any of the listed campgrounds.
