Campgrounds and RV parks near Farmington, IA

Water is the main draw. Indian Lake Park has a 44-acre no-wake lake for fishing, boating, and swimming, a two-mile interpretive trail around the lake, and a mix of full-hookup, water and electric, electric-only, and primitive tent sites. The Des Moines River is used for paddling and fishing throughout the corridor. Hikers can pick up 13 miles of trails at Lacey Keosauqua, winding through valleys and cliffs along the Des Moines River, and the park is a popular spot for spring bird watching. History travelers can tour the Cannonball House, the Thome-Benning House, and Athens Mill foundations at Battle of Athens State Historic Site. The nearby villages of Bonaparte and Bentonsport add antique shops, cafes, and a walkable historic riverfront within a short drive.

The camping season in southeast Iowa runs primarily April through October. The Lacey Keosauqua campground is closed January through March, opens in off-peak status in April, runs peak from May through mid-October, moves back to off-peak through the end of October, and closes November and December. Indian Lake Park is generally closed from late December through mid-March. Spring brings green woodlands and wildflowers but also the region's wettest months, with May typically the rainiest. Summer is warm and humid, with occasional thunderstorms, and lake activities peak on weekends. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with daytime highs in the mid-50s to mid-70s, cool nights, and foliage that peaks in October along the river. Winter camping is possible at a few sites. Basic and electric campsites at Battle of Athens are available year-round, with showers and water available April 15 through October 31, so RV renters relying on onboard tanks and heat can extend the season.

Expect wooded, quiet campgrounds with generous spacing. At Lacey Keosauqua, the campground has 65 campsites, 51 with electricity and 14 without, modern restrooms, a shower house, dump station, and playground equipment, with 13 sites offering sewer and water, 10 offering water, and 28 electric only. Cell service is limited in the river valley, and firewood is sold on site from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. Battle of Athens is more rustic: a first-come, first-served campground with 29 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs, 15 with electric hookups, and vault toilets. The shower house is about a mile from the sites, so plan accordingly. Roads into the smaller parks are rural and can be narrow. Ticks and mosquitoes are common from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and check for ticks after hiking.
