Campgrounds and RV parks near Fruitland, IA

The Mississippi River anchors most activity. Fairport has two boat ramps with courtesy docks at each ramp, and fishing is popular for walleye, catfish, and other species. Eagle watching draws visitors in the colder months when birds concentrate along open water below the locks and dams. At Wildcat Den State Park, trails wind through a variety of terrain and lead to fascinating sites such as Steamboat Rock and Devil's Punch Bowl. The Pine Creek Grist Mill, built in 1848 by Benjamin Nye, is one of the finest examples of mid-19th century mills left in the country and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby Muscatine adds a riverfront downtown, cycling paths, and farm stands within easy reach of any of the listed campgrounds.

The main camping season in eastern Iowa runs from spring through fall, with peak demand on summer weekends and holidays. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and typically start closing shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. If camping in April or later in October, there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available. Spring brings green-up and wildflowers, but also river variability. River levels can be unpredictable, with flood risk and partial campground flooding possible along the Mississippi. Summer is hot and humid with strong afternoon thunderstorms, so reserve early for the busiest weekends. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights and lower crowds, and eagle migration with mild temperatures makes fall weekends worth reserving in advance. Winter camping is limited, and the Wildcat Den campground is closed from January through March.

Expect a mix of hookup and rustic experiences within a short drive of Fruitland. Fairport has electric campsites, modern restrooms and showers, electrical hook-ups, and a dump station, making it the most RV-friendly choice on the list. The campground draws visitors with its river access and quiet atmosphere, though train noise from nearby tracks is frequent. Wildcat Den is more primitive. Campsites are in a non-modern campground with water and vault toilets, with no showers and no electrical service to the campsites. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa; buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay.
