Campgrounds near Humboldt, Iowa
Humboldt sits in north-central Iowa at the confluence of the East and West Forks of the Des Moines River, giving RV travelers access to a compact cluster of state parks and recreation areas within about an hour's drive. The closest option, Ambrose A Call State Park, protects a 138-acre pocket of rugged hills and heavily wooded virgin timber near the East Fork of the Des Moines River in Kossuth County, roughly a half-hour north near Algona.
South of town, Dolliver Memorial State Park follows the Des Moines River through sandstone bluffs, while Brushy Creek State Recreation Area spreads across a much larger footprint with a swimming beach and a dedicated equestrian campground. West of Humboldt, The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park in West Bend offers electric RV sites next to a well-known religious shrine.
Together these five properties cover the practical range for an RV base near Humboldt: small wooded state-park loops, a large multi-use recreation area with equestrian and beach camping, and a private RV park with reliable electric hookups.
Things to do near Humboldt
The region is built around water and woods. Brushy Creek State Recreation Area has a swimming beach on its reservoir plus boating, fishing, and an extensive equestrian and hiking trail network reachable from Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - North Equestrian and Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Beach. Dolliver Memorial State Park adds sandstone bluff hikes, prehistoric Indian mounds, and river fishing on the Des Moines.
Ambrose A Call State Park is small but scenic, with two miles of shaded trails through wooded ravines, a winding creek, an 18-hole disc golf course, and a historic log-cabin-style lodge that anchors group gatherings. In West Bend, The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park sits a short walk from the Grotto itself, a large man-made shrine of stones and gems that is a common day-trip stop for families in the area.

Iowa state park campgrounds around Humboldt run on a seasonal calendar. Park staff generally turn water on and open shower buildings and dump stations by May 1, then start closing them down in mid-October, so April and late-October campers should not count on modern facilities. Ambrose A Call State Park is closed each year from November 16 to April 14, and Dolliver Memorial State Park and Brushy Creek State Recreation Area follow similar Iowa DNR seasonal patterns.
Late May through early September is peak season. Summer brings warm days, the highest rainfall of the year, and the busiest weekends at Brushy Creek's beach and equestrian loops. Weekend stays from May through October require a two-night minimum, with a three-night minimum on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends.
Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site selection, though early-spring sites may be soft after snowmelt. Winters are cold with limited camping options. The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park in West Bend opens April 15 and closes November 1, weather permitting, so confirm dates with the shrine before arrival.
How to book near Humboldt
Iowa state parks use a central online reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, or by phone at 1-877-427-2757. Reservations open up to three months in advance of the arrival date. Dolliver Memorial State Park and both Brushy Creek State Recreation Area loops, the North Equestrian and the Beach, are booked through that system, and Brushy Creek's equestrian loop is designed for horse trailers and books separately from the beach-side campground.
Per Iowa DNR, campsites at Ambrose A Call State Park are available as walk-in sites year-round rather than through advance reservation, so plan to self-register at the campground entrance. The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park in West Bend operates independently on a first-come, first-served basis; register at the Grotto Office and Gift Shop on arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Facilities vary by park. Ambrose A Call State Park has a mix of electric and non-electric sites but no shower building or modern restroom, only a pit toilet, so plan for onboard water and holding-tank use. Brushy Creek and Dolliver Memorial generally offer modern restrooms and showers in season, with electric hookups at most sites; full hookups are limited in Iowa's state park system.
The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park has 53 grassy sites with 30- and 50-amp electric, on-site fresh water, showers, and a central water and sewer dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Sites accommodate rigs up to about 40 feet, with a lightly used rail line adjacent to part of the property.
Cell coverage is patchy in the wooded state parks. Iowa is under a statewide firewood transport quarantine for emerald ash borer, so buy or gather firewood locally rather than hauling it in.

Iowa does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A coaches. To book on RVezy you must be an approved driver, typically 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform. Visiting from overseas? Every RV rental in Humboldt, IA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit Highway 169 with peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. You will see the full policy details during checkout and inside your RVezy account, no fine-print surprises. Once you're here, Joe Sheldon Park on the west edge of town has open grass and Des Moines River access perfect for a leashed romp, and the Three Rivers Trail (a 36-mile rail-trail running through Humboldt) is a fantastic dog walk. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, Iowa summers are humid and your dog will thank you.
humboldtcountyia.org/conservationCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Humboldt?
Yes, RV delivery in Humboldt is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving a big rig. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Joe Sheldon Park, Frank A. Gotch State Park, the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, or even a relative's driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every switch and tank. Just use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see distance-based delivery fees. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV or you are flying into Fort Dodge Regional Airport (FOD) about 20 minutes south.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Humboldt%2C%20IowaHow do mileage policies work on a Humboldt RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage allowances, and you'll see the exact policy right on each listing before you book, no guessing. Many Humboldt-area rigs include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles around $0.30 to $0.50 each. If you're planning shorter trips, like the 20-minute drive to Fort Dodge, the 90-minute haul to Des Moines, or weekend stays at Brushy Creek State Recreation Area, the standard allowance is usually plenty. Planning a bigger loop? Look for listings tagged 'RV rental with unlimited mileage' or message the host to negotiate a custom mileage package before booking.

Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Humboldt, IA, when temperatures sit in the comfortable 70 to 85°F range and the Three Rivers Trail and Des Moines River come alive. June brings warm days and the area's lush prairie scenery, July and August are peak swimming and fishing weather (with humidity around 70 to 80%), and September offers crisp mornings, fewer bugs, and gorgeous early-fall color along the river bluffs. Pro tip: aim for early September if you want quiet campgrounds, perfect weather, and shoulder-season pricing on your Humboldt RV trip.
weather.gov/dmx/Can I rent an RV in Humboldt during the winter?
Yes, winter rentals are possible and can be a cozy adventure, just plan ahead. Iowa winters in Humboldt regularly dip to 10 to 25°F (and below zero in January), so look for RVs equipped with a working furnace, heated holding tanks, and the ability to plug into shore power. Most county and state campgrounds close from late October through mid-April, but year-round full-hookup options exist at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds and nearby private parks. Message your host to confirm winterization details before booking. Pro tip: winter RV stays paired with a fireplace-warm cabin vibe are perfect for ice fishing trips on Brushy Creek Lake.
iowadnr.gov/Things-to-Do/CampingI've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Humboldt beginner-friendly?
Totally, Humboldt is one of the easiest places in Iowa to learn. Traffic is light, Highway 169 and US-20 are wide and well-maintained, and there are zero mountain passes or tight urban canyons to navigate. Your RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, tank dumping, and the propane system, so you're never left guessing. Prefer to skip driving altogether? Many local hosts deliver and set up the RV at your campsite. Pro tip: start small with a Class B campervan or 20-something-foot travel trailer for your first-time RV rental, then size up next trip once you've got the hang of it.
iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/about-iowa-driver-s-licensesWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
Breathe easy: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so help is always one phone call away whether you're at Joe Sheldon Park or three hours into a road trip. Coverage handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service location. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting questions, and RVezy's customer support team backs up the whole experience. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup, save the roadside number to your phone before you pull out, and you're set for a worry-free Iowa adventure.
iowadot.gov/traveler-informationWhat are the best RV road trips from Humboldt, IA?
Humboldt's central Iowa location makes it a great launchpad. Popular RV road trips from Humboldt include Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes (about 90 miles / 1.5 hours northwest) for beach days and boating; Des Moines (95 miles / 1.5 hours south) for the State Fair in August; the Mississippi River bluffs near Dubuque (about 200 miles / 3.5 hours east); and the Loess Hills along the Missouri River (180 miles / 3 hours southwest). Want to go bigger? The Black Hills of South Dakota are a doable 8-hour haul. Pro tip: build in a stop at Brushy Creek SRA on the way out, it's only 30 minutes south and a perfect first-night shakedown.
traveliowa.com/Can I take my Humboldt RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, so road trips from Humboldt to Minnesota's North Shore, Wisconsin's Door County, or South Dakota's Badlands are totally on the table. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed too, but it depends on the individual host, so message the host through the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state loop, ask your host about a higher nightly mileage cap upfront to keep things simple.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Plan smart and fuel is very manageable. Travel trailers don't burn gas themselves, but your tow vehicle will likely drop to 10 to 14 MPG while towing. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches around 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans a fuel-friendly 16 to 20 MPG. Iowa gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often $2.90 to $3.40 per gallon, and you'll find Casey's, Kum & Go, and Fareway stations all over Humboldt and along US-20. Pro tip: fill up in Humboldt or Fort Dodge before heading to smaller towns, where pumps can be sparse and prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Humboldt?
For the best sites, book 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July, Humboldt County Fair (early August), and Labor Day. Iowa State Parks like Brushy Creek SRA use the official Iowa DNR reservation system at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com and open bookings up to 3 months in advance. Humboldt County parks like Joe Sheldon and Frank A. Gotch take reservations through the Humboldt County Conservation Board, and weekday stays are usually walk-up easy. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips (May, September, early October) often need just a week's notice, and you'll get the prettiest riverside sites at Joe Sheldon Park without the crowds.
iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Humboldt?
Driving an RV around Humboldt is refreshingly mellow. US Highway 169 runs straight through town and connects you to US-20 (a four-lane east-west expressway) just 8 miles south, both ideal for big rigs with wide lanes and gentle grades. The terrain is gently rolling glacial prairie, no mountains, no tunnels, no low bridges to worry about. Watch out for farm equipment on rural county roads during planting (April-May) and harvest (September-October), and keep an eye on the sky in spring and summer when thunderstorms roll through fast. Pro tip: Iowa 511 (511ia.org) gives real-time road and weather updates, save it to your phone before you head out.
511ia.org/What amenities can I expect at Humboldt-area campgrounds?

Gotch State Park has electric sites and accommodates a range of RV sizes. The Humboldt County Fairgrounds provides water, electric, and a dump station near downtown. For 50-amp service and full hookups, head about 20 minutes south to John F. Kennedy Memorial Park in Fort Dodge. Both Joe Sheldon and Frank Gotch have dump stations on site. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class C and Class A units, convertible dinettes for kids), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC and furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays. Each RV's full amenity list, sleep count, and seatbelt count is right on the listing page. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and look for the generator icon if you want flexibility to camp without hookups during your Iowa trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Humboldt%2C%20IowaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts offer plenty of helpful add-ons to make your motorhome rental in Humboldt turnkey. Common extras include kitchen and linen kits ($50-$100), bike racks, generators, camping chairs and tables, propane refills, and even kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Humboldt, with most offering delivery within a 30-mile radius for a flat fee. Standard rentals are round-trip, but if you're dreaming of a one-way trip from Humboldt to Okoboji or Des Moines, message the host directly, some will work it out for an additional drop-off fee. Pro tip: book add-ons during checkout so everything's packed and ready when you arrive.
travelhumboldtcounty.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms there is no damage or major cleaning needed. To keep things smooth, take dated photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, return the RV clean with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and stick to the mileage limit. Pro tip: review the listing's house rules before booking to avoid surprise fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for first-timers visiting Humboldt?
Here's the local secret: Humboldt is the proud hometown of Frank Gotch, the legendary world heavyweight wrestling champion, and Frank A. Gotch State Park (named in his honor) is one of the quietest, prettiest small state parks in Iowa, perfect for a low-key first night in your rental. Also don't miss the Humboldt County Historical Museum's Mill Farm, the 36-mile Three Rivers Trail for biking, and a stop at the iconic Humboldt Hy-Vee for road-trip groceries. For a cheap RV rental Humboldt experience that feels like a real getaway, base yourself at Joe Sheldon Park and float the Des Moines River by day. Pro tip: visit during Humboldt County Fair week in early August for full small-town Iowa charm.
