Camping near Kellogg, Iowa
Kellogg is a small town in Jasper County, central Iowa, sitting just off Interstate 80 between Newton and Grinnell. For RV travelers, it functions as a quiet base for exploring Rock Creek Lake, Lake Red Rock, and the Des Moines metro area about forty minutes to the west. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, roads are well paved, and access from I-80 is straightforward for larger rigs.
Rock Creek State Park is a 1,697-acre park in Jasper County that includes numerous boat launches and docks, picnic grounds, camping grounds, and trails for horseback riding and hiking, and sits just east of Kellogg. Kellogg RV Park sits in town, and the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey is a short drive west near Iowa Speedway.
Further afield, Elk Rock State Park is located on Iowa's largest water body, Lake Red Rock, with more than 50,000 acres of public land and a wide array of recreational opportunities. Shady Oaks RV Campground, in the greater Newton area, rounds out the region's private options.
Things to do around Kellogg
Water recreation is the main draw. Anglers can catch crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and channel catfish from the lake, and there is a beach that offers unsupervised swimming. At the south boat ramp, there is universally accessible fishing as well as boat slips available to rent from April 15 to October 15. Pontoons, fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats are available at the park concession, along with live bait, tackle, ice, firewood, and fishing licenses.
On land, the park has 8.5 miles of multi-use, non-paved trails around the perimeter of the lake for hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding and snowmobiling, plus a 5.5 mile bike trail on the east side that goes to the town of Grinnell.
Day-trip options include Iowa Speedway just off I-80 at Newton, Adventureland Amusement Park east of Des Moines, and Pella's Dutch shops and pastries about half an hour south of Rock Creek. Elk Rock State Park at Lake Red Rock adds a second large lake for boating and birdwatching.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is defined by the state park calendar. The Rock Creek campground is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through November 15 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival, and the campground is closed the rest of the year. Peak season runs May 1 through October 15, with off-peak windows in April and from mid-October to mid-November.
Park staff generally aim to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. Trips in April and late October carry no guarantee of modern facilities.
Summer is warm, humid, and the busiest stretch, with thunderstorms common. Spring brings migratory birds and wildflowers but wet trails, while fall delivers cooler nights and color along the lake. In winter the 602-acre lake may freeze over, and the park is a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Iowa Speedway race weekends drive booking pressure at private parks in Newton.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book a site
Iowa state park campgrounds, including Rock Creek State Park and the main campground at Elk Rock State Park, are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on reserveamerica.com. The Elk Rock campground is 100% reservable, a reservation is required, and advanced reservations can be made through the online reservation system for Elk Rock State Park. Standard sites at Rock Creek can be made for today and up to 3 months in advance.
A cancellation fee applies for all cancellations, cancellations 15 to 29 days prior to arrival forfeit one night plus the fee, and cancellations less than 15 days prior forfeit two nights plus the fee. For peak summer weekends and Iowa Speedway race dates, plan to book several weeks out.
Private options handle their own reservations: the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey books through koa.com, and Kellogg RV Park and Shady Oaks RV Campground take direct bookings through their operators.
What to expect on the ground
Rock Creek State Park offers campsites with electrical hookups for RVs and trailers, modern restrooms, showers, and an RV dump station. Sites are a mix of electric and non-electric, several sit at the water's edge, and spacing is reasonable for an Iowa state park. Cell reception around the lake is stronger on Verizon than on some smaller carriers.
At Elk Rock, the nonequestrian campground has both electric and non-electric sites, and a modern shower building and trailer dumping station are available, as well as a self-dispensing firewood machine located next to the shower building. The KOA Journey in Newton offers full-hookup pull-throughs and traveler-oriented amenities geared to rigs moving along I-80.
Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 counties in Iowa, so buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay. Pets must be leashed, and quiet hours are standard across Iowa state parks.
