Campgrounds and RV parks near Mediapolis, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Geode is well known for fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, and the main trail starts at the north end of the lake and follows it to the dam, is accessible from several picnic areas, and connects with another trail on the west side so a full loop around the lake is possible. River fishing is popular at Delabar State Park, boats with motors of any size are allowed on the river, and a launching ramp at the south end of the park plus two boat docks make river access easy. At Big River State Forest, the 1-1/2 mile Lincoln Hiking Trail commemorates Abraham Lincoln's march through the area in 1832, and the 60-mile network of firebreaks is used by hikers, backpackers, birders, and equestrians. In Mount Pleasant, the Midwest Old Threshers Campground hosts the Old Threshers Reunion the week leading into Labor Day, and other local events include Burlington Steamboat Days in early June and the West Point Sweet Corn Festival in early August.

Southeast Iowa has four distinct seasons. Summers are long, warm, humid, and wet, while winters are cold, snowy, and windy. For most RV renters, the practical camping window runs from mid-spring through late fall, when full amenities are running and lake and river access is open. Summer is peak season. Weekends fill early around Independence Day and the Labor Day approach, when the Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant draws crowds the week leading into Labor Day. Spring brings cooler nights and higher river levels, with wildflowers and strong fishing on Lake Geode. Fall trades heat for color through the oak and hickory woods, with quieter campgrounds after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited. Geode State Park's campground accepts reservations April 1 through December 14 and is closed December 15 through March 31, and many nearby campgrounds and beaches close or reduce services once temperatures drop. Travellers planning a shoulder-season trip should confirm shower buildings, dump stations, and water hookups directly with the campground before arrival.

Facilities range from full-service to rustic. At Geode State Park, the campground includes both electric and non-electric sites, two modern shower buildings, a sewage dump station, drinking water, picnic tables, and fire rings, and two camp pads and restrooms are accessible to the mobility impaired. Access roads at some Iowa state park loops are gravel rather than paved, so slower speeds and wider turns are the norm. Delabar is more basic. Amenities include electrical hookups, drinking water, a sanitary station, and a jet pump for filling trailers, but there are no sewer hookups at individual sites and showers are not on site. At Big River State Forest, picnic areas along Campbell Slough and Putney's Landing include shelter houses, tables, camp stoves, and drinking water, and cell service can be weak. Travellers should arrive with fresh water tanks topped off and a plan for waste disposal on longer stays.
