Campgrounds near Melbourne, Iowa
Melbourne sits in Marshall County in central Iowa, roughly midway between Des Moines and Marshalltown and a short drive north of Interstate 80. The location puts RV renters within reach of both open prairie recreation and small-town amenities, with lake-based state park camping, private RV parks, and river outfitters all inside an easy day's radius.
Shady Oaks RV Campground and Kellogg RV Park handle full-hookup stays close to town, while the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey offers a larger private-park setup along the I-80 corridor for travelers moving through the region. For public-land camping, Rock Creek State Park sits in Jasper County near Kellogg, covering roughly 1,697 acres with boat launches, picnic grounds, camping loops, and multi-use trails.
Daytime side trips can add river time at Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing, giving families a way to break up longer stays with a low-key float.
Things to do near Melbourne
Water recreation drives most trips in this part of Iowa. Anglers at Rock Creek Lake can catch crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, and a beach offers unsupervised swimming while a park concession store rents boats and sells bait, tackle, and firewood. Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing is the go-to for a slow float on a warm afternoon.
On land, 8.5 miles of multi-use, non-paved trails circle the lake for hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding, and snowmobiling, and a 5.5-mile bike path along the park's east side runs to the town of Grinnell. Newton, home to the KOA Journey, adds Iowa Speedway events and small-town dining as an easy off-park option.

The public camping window is defined mostly by Iowa DNR park schedules. Rock Creek State Park is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 1 through November 15, with campsites in walk-in only status the rest of the year due to unpredictable winter weather. Park concessions run roughly April 15 through October 15, with extended Memorial Day through Labor Day hours.
Late May through early September is the busiest stretch, with warm days, active lake use, and the highest weekend demand at state park sites. Spring shoulder weeks bring cooler nights and wetter ground, while September and early October usually offer quieter sites and steady weather before facilities wind down.
Winter closes most public campgrounds, though private parks in the area may keep limited sites open. The lake at Rock Creek can freeze over, and the park remains a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, so day-use visits continue even when overnight camping is unavailable.

Great experience! The RV was spotless and very comfortable! Everything worked as expected and it made my weekend camping trip very relaxing to have the RV delivered, setup, and ready to enjoy when I arrived. Koby was very responsive and easy to communicate with. I will be renting from him again in the future.

Jerry went above & beyond from start to finish. The camper was well stocked and everything worked! We would definitely rent from him again. Jerry is great- this app not so great.
Robert H. - Sep 2024
Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

How to book near Melbourne
State park sites in this region are handled through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Rock Creek State Park is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations from April 1 through November 15, up to 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival when paying by credit card, so same-day booking is possible when sites are available.
Campsite reservations open on a rolling three-month window, meaning sites can be booked from today up to three months ahead of the arrival date. Summer weekends fill early, so booking as soon as the window opens is the safest approach.
Private parks including the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey, Shady Oaks RV Campground, and Kellogg RV Park take reservations directly through their own booking channels. River trips with Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing are arranged separately from the campground stay.
What to expect
Expect a mix of quiet rural sites and highway-accessible private parks. State park sites at Rock Creek include electric hookups for RVs and trailers, modern restrooms, showers, and an RV dump station, and several campsites sit on the water's edge with views of Rock Creek Lake.
Cell coverage is uneven in the countryside, and larger rigs should check site dimensions before booking, since some lakeside loops have tight turns. Due to concerns about invasive species, bringing outside firewood may be discouraged, and buying locally near the campground is often recommended.
KOA and other private parks along the I-80 corridor tend to offer pull-through sites, full hookups, Wi-Fi, and family amenities, making them a practical choice for one-night stops between longer destinations.
