Campgrounds near Northwood
Northwood sits in Worth County in north-central Iowa, close to the Minnesota state line and within an easy drive of several public and private campgrounds suited to RV travel. The city is the county seat of Worth County along the Shell Rock River, and Interstate 35 runs immediately west of town, making Northwood a practical base for RV travelers routing between the Twin Cities and central Iowa.
The closest developed camping is across the state line at Myre-Big Island State Park near Albert Lea, Minnesota, which has two drive-in campgrounds. Big Island Campground has 34 wooded sites with 17 electrical hookups and one camper cabin, while White Fox Campground has 59 open sites with 15 electrical. Private options in the area include Happy Times Resort near Lake Mills and River Bend Campgrounds, plus the Albert Lea / Austin KOA Journey off I-90 for travelers wanting full hookups and pull-through sites.

Peak RV season in the Northwood area runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when temperatures are warm, water and shower buildings are open, and both public and private campgrounds run full schedules. Iowa state park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and generally start closing them down around mid-October depending on the weather. For camping in April or later in October there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available.
Spring and fall are quieter and prized for birding, as migrating species use the wetlands, prairies, and woodlands at Myre-Big Island State Park. Nights can be cold well into May and again by early October, so a furnace-equipped rig is helpful in the shoulder seasons.
Winter camping is limited. Iowa state park water, flush toilets, and shower buildings are closed during the winter months, and most private parks in the area also reduce services or close outright once freezing sets in.
How to book campgrounds near Northwood
Iowa state parks and Minnesota state parks use different systems, and travelers crossing the state line should plan accordingly. Iowa state park campsites are reservable through the DNR reservation system, online at iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling (877) 427-2757. One hundred percent of Iowa state park campsites can be reserved up to 3 months in advance.
For Myre-Big Island State Park in Minnesota, camping reservations are required and can be made up to 120 days in advance through Reserve Minnesota online or by calling 866-857-2757. All campsites in Minnesota state parks require a reservation year-round.
Private parks including Happy Times Resort, River Bend Campgrounds, and the Albert Lea / Austin KOA Journey take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first, so booking 6 to 12 weeks out is prudent for peak dates.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Myre-Big Island State Park are wooded at Big Island and more open at White Fox, with electric hookups on a share of sites and no sewer at individual pads. Big Island offers 34 wooded sites with 17 electrical; White Fox offers 59 open sites with 15 electrical, all 30-amp. Plan on using the park dump station rather than sewer hookups, and note that sites can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet.
Private parks in the region offer more RV-focused infrastructure. Happy Times Resort provides full hook-up sites with 30-amp and 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections, and the Albert Lea / Austin KOA Journey along I-90 offers similar full-service pads suitable for longer motorhomes and travel trailers.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-35 corridor and at private parks; inside the state park, expect weaker signal in wooded loops. Mosquitoes and ticks are typical for the region from late spring through summer.
