Campgrounds and RV parks near Saylorville, IA

The Saylorville Lake project supports a wide slate of outdoor activity, including boating, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, swimming, fishing, and hunting. Anglers target walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and northern pike, and an Iowa fishing license is required. The paved Neal Smith Trail runs 24 miles from Des Moines to Big Creek State Park and connects several of the east-side campgrounds, drawing bikers, hikers, joggers, walkers, and in-line skaters. Beyond the water, families staying at Adventureland Campground can walk into the adjacent theme park, while Walnut Woods State Park adds shaded bottomland hiking along the Raccoon River. Downtown Des Moines is a short drive south for the State Capitol, science center, zoo, and Principal Riverwalk, making Saylorville a practical base for combining lake time with a city day.

Central Iowa has a four-season humid continental climate with cold winters and warm, humid summers. Summer highs sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and thunderstorms are frequent, which drives the busiest camping window from May through October. Reservations are strongly recommended during that peak season, especially for weekend stays, and holiday weekends around the lake fill quickly. Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Saylorville Lake operate seasonally rather than year-round. Prairie Flower is typically open May 1 to October 20, and Cherry Glen runs from mid-April through mid-October, with similar shoulder-season windows at other lakeside sites. Walnut Woods State Park accepts reservations year-round, and private parks such as Griff's Valley View RV Park and Campground and Timberline RV Campground generally keep longer seasons. Spring and early summer bring the wettest weather and occasional flood-driven closures around the reservoir, since the lake exists in part to manage Des Moines River flood crests. Fall offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color along the river valley before Corps campgrounds close for winter.

Most Corps campgrounds around Saylorville Lake offer electric hookups, commonly 30 and 50 amp, along with fire rings, picnic tables, flush restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Water and full-hookup sites are limited on Corps land, so RV renters should plan to arrive with a full fresh tank and use dump stations on the way out. Walnut Woods State Park has electric on all sites plus eight full-hookup sites, modern restrooms, and a dump station, but no showers. Private parks such as Griff's Valley View RV Park and Campground and Timberline RV Campground generally offer more full-hookup sites. Registered campers at Corps sites typically receive a vehicle pass that also covers day-use beach and boat-ramp access. Pets must be leashed, and quiet hours are enforced overnight.
