Campgrounds and RV parks near Wapello, IA

The Mississippi River drives most of the recreation. Fairport State Recreation Area sits along the Mississippi with two boat ramps offering direct water access for anglers and boaters, and the Fairport Fish Hatchery is next door. Wildcat Den State Park, a short drive away, features 75-foot cliffs, rock formations, and the 1848 Pine Creek Gristmill on the National Register of Historic Places. Geode State Park offers fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, red-eared sunfish and more, with shoreline access from picnic areas along the lakeshore and dam, and no-wake boating on the lake. The Southeast Iowa Bike Route is a forty-six mile route that connects Lacey-Keosauqua State Park and Geode State Park. Across the river, Big River State Forest covers over 3,000 acres along the Mississippi with hiking, camping, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing, plus the 1.5-mile Lincoln Hiking Trail commemorating Lincoln's 1832 march through the area. Delabar State Park adds short wooded trails and river fishing near Oquawka.

The main camping window in this part of Iowa runs from spring through late fall. The Geode campground accepts reservations April 1 through December 14 and is closed December 15 through March 31. Fairport operates on a similar spring-through-fall schedule, and both parks are fully reservable during their seasons. Water service and showers follow a shorter window: park staff generally try to have the water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing down shower buildings and turning off water and dump stations around mid-October depending on the weather. Frost-free hydrants may be available for off-season camping, but campers need to call the park to confirm, and there is no guarantee modern facilities will be available in April or later in October. Summer is peak season for river campgrounds, with weekends filling well in advance. Spring brings the wettest weather and higher river levels, while fall offers cooler nights, fewer crowds, and foliage along the Mississippi bluffs.

Expect a mix of modern and basic facilities. Fairport provides drive-in access for RVs up to 55 feet with electric and water hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, a dump station, and restrooms with showers, though regular train traffic runs along the adjacent rail line, with early morning schedules noted by overnight visitors, and highway noise accompanies the railroad activity. Geode has both electric and non-electric campsites, two modern shower buildings, and a sewage dump station, with two camp pads and restrooms accessible to the mobility-impaired, plus some full-hookup sites added in recent upgrades. Delabar State Park and Big River State Forest are more rustic on the Illinois side, with basic sites, drinking water, and dump stations available, but limited or no hookups at individual sites. Cell service is spotty at the more remote Illinois sites, so download maps before arrival.
