Campgrounds and RV parks near Wellsburg, IA

Fishing and paddling are the anchor activities. Pine Lake State Park holds Upper and Lower Pine Lakes plus frontage on the Iowa River, with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish among the target species, and ice fishing draws anglers in winter. Union Grove Lake produces bluegill, bass, crappie, catfish, saugeye, walleye, and northern pike, with two boat ramps and an unsupervised swimming beach, all under no-wake rules. On-water floats are easy to arrange through Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing, which coordinates tubing trips on the Iowa River. Trail users have more than ten miles of hiking around Pine Lake along with a 2.6 mile paved multi-purpose trail, plus the 50-mile Lake-to-Lake State Park Bike Route linking Pine Lake to George Wyth Memorial State Park.

Central Iowa runs on a strong seasonal calendar. Peak camping demand falls between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, when weekends at Pine Lake State Park and Union Grove State Park book out well in advance. Late spring and early fall bring milder temperatures, fewer bugs, and better site availability for RV travelers who can flex their dates. Seasonal closures matter for trip planning. The campgrounds at both Pine Lake State Park and Union Grove State Park are closed each year from November 1 through March 31, with modern restrooms, showers, dump stations, and water hydrants shut down during that period. Vault toilets remain available at Union Grove during the closure. April and October fall in the off-peak shoulder, when the campgrounds are open but some services may still be limited. Cabins at both parks stay reservable year-round. Cabin stays at Pine Lake and Union Grove carry a Friday-to-Friday week-long requirement from Memorial Day weekend through the Thursday after Labor Day, with a two-night minimum outside that window.

Facilities at the nearby state parks are modern but modest. Pine Lake State Park Campground offers 50-amp electric sites, modern showers and restrooms, and a trailer dump station, with about 25 percent of sites available first-come, first-served and the rest reservable. Union Grove State Park provides electric and full-hookup (electric, water, sewer) sites along with a modern shower house, restrooms, and a sanitary dump station. Expect wooded, sometimes uneven sites at Pine Lake, with some sites closer to the road than the water and a mix of grass and crushed-rock trails nearby. Union Grove sites sit on flatter terrain with a mix of lake-view and more secluded spots, and vault toilets serve the campground during shoulder-season closures of the main facilities. Because emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties, buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay rather than hauling wood in from home.
