Campgrounds near Altamont, Kansas
Altamont sits in Labette County in southeast Kansas, within easy RV range of both private parks and a full-service state park on Elk City Reservoir. The town itself is small and rural, but its position on US-160 puts renters close to Parsons, Independence, and the Oklahoma border, making it a practical base for a Kansas prairie road trip.
Closest to town, Mission RV Park offers straightforward service for renters wanting a quick overnight. Buckeye Estates & RV Park and Buckeye RV Park add nearby hookup options with a longer-stay feel.
About forty minutes west, Elk City State Park covers 857 acres five miles west of Independence, with a 4,500-acre reservoir and a 12,000-acre adjacent wildlife area. The park operates two campgrounds along the shoreline: Prairie Meadow and Timber Road. Between them the park offers 11 full utility sites with water, electric, and sewer, 85 water and electric sites, and 54 primitive sites. Together, these five options cover the range from bare-bones overnights to lakeside multi-night stays.
Things to do near Altamont
Elk City Reservoir is the main outdoor draw. Renters staying at Prairie Meadow or Timber Road can launch boats, fish for crappie, walleye, and channel catfish, and hike a network of trails through the park. The Elk River Hiking Trail is a 15-mile route that begins at the west edge of the dam and ends near the U.S. Route 160 bridge on the Elk River. Shorter options include the 2.75-mile Table Mound Trail on the east side of the lake, the two-thirds-mile Post Oak Nature Trail at the scenic overlook, and a paved, accessible 3.3-mile South Squaw Multipurpose trail.
In town, families use Mission RV Park, Buckeye Estates & RV Park, and Buckeye RV Park as an overnight base for day trips. The Big Brutus mining shovel in West Mineral, the Little House on the Prairie site south of Independence, and downtown Parsons are all within a short drive. The state park also has a swimming beach and a disc golf course for shorter stays.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in southeast Kansas. From April through early June, daytime highs sit in a comfortable range and wildflowers bloom across the tallgrass prairie, though this is also the wettest stretch of the year and severe thunderstorms are common. Renters should plan for possible tornado watches and monitor NOAA weather radio.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs frequently in the 90s. Elk City State Park sites book heavily around Independence Day and other summer holiday weekends, and shaded loops fill first. Bringing shade structures helps, and water and electric hookups are worth reserving where possible.
Fall brings drier air, cooler nights, and strong fishing on the reservoir. The state park itself is open year-round. Winter is the quiet season: private parks in Altamont typically stay open, but services at the reservoir loops can be reduced and fewer sites are staffed. Verify utility availability before arriving from December through February.
How to book a campsite
Elk City State Park sites at Prairie Meadow and Timber Road can be reserved online through ksoutdoors.com, by phone, or in person at the ranger station. A Kansas state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the camping fee. Utility sites at popular loops sell out early for summer holiday weekends, so booking well ahead is recommended.
The three private parks near town, Mission RV Park, Buckeye Estates & RV Park, and Buckeye RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone. Availability is generally easier to find on short notice than at the state park.
Renters traveling with a larger rig should confirm site length, hookup amperage, and turning access when calling ahead.
What to expect
Expect a rural, prairie setting with open skies, cattle country, and light traffic. Cell service is generally reliable in Altamont and along US-160, though it can thin out on the back roads approaching the reservoir.
At Elk City State Park, amenities include electric hookups, conveniently located restrooms and shower houses, a dump station, and laundry facilities. Sites are described as generous and spacious, with options ranging from primitive sites to concrete pads for RVs, and privacy varies by location, with Prairie Meadow noted for being quiet and secluded while lake-adjacent sites are more open. In-town parks lean utilitarian: level gravel or grass pads, hookups, and quick highway access rather than resort amenities.
Wind is a constant factor on the plains, so awnings should be stowed when unattended. Grocery and fuel stops are easiest in Parsons or Independence.
