Burrton sits in Harvey County on the Kansas prairie, roughly midway between Hutchinson and Newton along US-50. Campground options within a short drive cover a range of styles. Spring Lake RV Resort and Hitchin' Post RV Park offer private full-hookup sites geared to travelers. Sand Hills State Park protects sand dunes, grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands within a 1,123-acre natural area two miles northeast of Hutchinson, and provides public campsites with hookups. Lighthouse Landing RV Park and Cabins and Cottonwood Grove RV Campground round out the nearby private options for travelers who want hookups and shower facilities.
The surrounding terrain is flat to gently rolling, which makes site leveling straightforward at most private parks. Highway access is easy for larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs, and fuel and grocery stops are available in Hutchinson, Newton, and along the K-61 corridor.
Things to do near Burrton
Sand Hills State Park is the primary outdoor draw. The park features a dramatic landscape of sand dunes rising 10 to 40 feet high, interspersed with grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands in the heart of central Kansas. Eight interconnected trails spanning 14 miles wind through the dunes and varied habitats, offering opportunities for hiking, walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. Wildlife watching and wildflower walks are common.
Hutchinson adds several rainy-day options, including the Cosmosphere space museum and the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, plus the Kansas State Fairgrounds, which hosts events throughout the year. Newton offers historic downtown shopping and Harvey County West Park for day use.
Families traveling with kids can pair a morning hike at Sand Hills with an afternoon in town. Anglers can look to nearby community and county lakes for bass, catfish, and crappie.

Daytime temperatures are mild, humidity drops compared to midsummer, and wildflowers on the sand prairie peak in May and again in September. Summer brings hot afternoons, with July averaging a high of 93°F and a low near 68°F.
Winter camping is possible at Sand Hills State Park, which includes corrals and frost-free hydrants for year-round camping. Private RV parks in the area generally stay open all year, though some services scale back between December and February.
How to book a campsite
Sand Hills State Park reservations are accepted through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, using its online booking system. A campground has been established with 64 utility sites: 44 sites have water, sewer, and electricity, 20 sites have just water and sewer, all sites have 50 amp service, and 14 sites have horsepens made up of two 12-by-12 pens. These 14 horsepen sites are Prime Sites with an additional daily fee. A Kansas camping permit is required for overnight stays, and daily, 14-day, and annual passes are sold online or at park offices.
Private parks near Burrton, including Spring Lake RV Resort, Hitchin' Post RV Park, Lighthouse Landing RV Park and Cabins, and Cottonwood Grove RV Campground, are booked directly with each property by phone or website. Kansas State Fair week in September fills sites early, so book well ahead for that stretch.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Burrton and the surrounding campgrounds are paved and RV-friendly. Sand Hills State Park sits 2 miles northeast of Hutchinson, with the campground entrance 2 miles east of K-61 Highway and 56th Street, accessible via paved roads. Some sites there run slightly off-level, so leveling blocks are useful.
Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, laundry, and shower buildings, with pull-through sites available for larger rigs. Amenities in the state park campground include concrete camping pads, fire rings, lantern stands, picnic tables, covered grills, restrooms and showers, horsepens, and a trailer dump station. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US-50 and K-61 corridors. Pets are welcome at Sand Hills State Park and at most private parks, though leash rules apply.
Expect wind. The open prairie means steady breezes and occasional strong gusts, especially in spring. Secure awnings, and check tie-downs before leaving the campsite for the day.
