Campgrounds and RV parks near Cherryvale, KS

The reservoir is the main draw. Elk City Lake supports fishing for channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, crappie, and largemouth bass, with a boat ramp inside the state park and additional access points around the shoreline. Paddling, swimming at the park beach, and boating are all common in warm months. On foot, the Green Thumb Nature Trail has its trailhead at Timber Road Campground and is a one-mile interpretive loop that climbs to a view over Elk City Lake. The longer Table Mound Hiking Trail runs along the reservoir's bluffs among ash and oak, with trailheads at the scenic overlook near the dam and at Timber Road. The park also has dedicated mountain-biking trails, which are uncommon for the region. Off the water, families use Cherryvale and Independence as bases for small museums, city parks, and diners.

Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year. May is the peak rainfall month at the nearby Independence climate station, averaging over five inches of precipitation, and thunderstorms can move through quickly. Lakeside sites can turn muddy after heavy rain, and severe-weather awareness matters from April through June. Summer is hot and humid. July averages a high near 90°F with lows in the low 70s, and August often runs even warmer, so the reservoir gets busy on holiday weekends. Reservable sites at Elk City State Park fill earliest for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends, all of which carry multi-night minimums, so booking well ahead is the norm for those dates. Fall is the most comfortable RV window. Days cool into the 60s and 70s, humidity drops, and demand eases. Winter is short but cold, with occasional snow in January through March; the state park stays open year-round, but online reservations are limited to the April through October prime season, and off-season sites are first-come, first-served.

Elk City State Park sites vary widely in length and orientation. Some sites are pull-throughs and others are back-ins on gravel or concrete pads, and shade varies from well-covered woodland sites in Prairie Meadow and Timber Road to more open sites closer to the water. Expect fire rings, picnic tables, a dump station, and modern restrooms with showers in the main areas, while the Timber Road area itself has pit toilets. Sites #1 through #5 are known for lake views. Cell coverage around the reservoir is patchy depending on carrier. Ticks and chiggers are active in warm months, and mosquitoes pick up after rain. Seasonal flooding can occasionally affect access roads, so checking park conditions before arrival is worth the call. The private parks in and near Cherryvale are geared toward full-hookup travelers on level sites with easy road access.
