Campgrounds and RV parks near Fredonia, KS

Fredonia sits in Wilson County in southeast Kansas, within short drives of three state parks that anchor most RV trips to the area. The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters, which gives the region a long, workable camping season on either side of the summer peak. The closest developed camping is at Cross Timbers State Park on Toronto Reservoir, about 20 miles north. The park comprises 1,075 acres in the northern region known to early pioneers as the Cross Timbers, is adjacent to the 4,600-acre Toronto Wildlife Area, and has numerous access points to the 2,800-acre Toronto Lake. Woodson Cove is one of several camping areas within that park, and Woodson State Fishing Lake sits a few miles east. West of Fredonia, Fall River State Park offers Quarry Bay on Fall River Reservoir. South of town, Elk City State Park on Elk City Reservoir includes Timber Road and Prairie Meadow. Together these give RV travelers a mix of full-hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive options within roughly an hour of Fredonia.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks manages the state park campgrounds around Fredonia, and reservations go through the state system at ksoutdoors.com or ReserveAmerica, or via the CampItKS mobile app. A state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the campsite fee at all Kansas state parks. Kansas uses a block-release booking system. Prime-season reservations, from April 1 through October 31, open in mid-December for the following year, with Cross Timbers, Elk City, and Fall River in the second release wave. From that point, sites can be booked up to 364 days in advance. Summer weekends and holidays book out early, and on high-demand weekends it can be difficult to get a campsite at Quarry Bay, which is small and largely primitive. Woodson State Fishing Lake is first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved.
