Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Hope, KS

Cheney Reservoir is the main draw. The lake is regularly ranked among the windiest in the country and is a magnet for sailors, windsurfers, and kite-boarders, with the Ninnescah Sailing Association based on the West Shore. Boating, fishing for crappie, catfish, and striped bass, and swimming are the standard summer activities, and campers can launch kayaks and canoes directly from waterfront sites. On land, the Giefer Creek and Spring Creek nature trails offer easy hiking within the park. Day trips from a Mount Hope base include downtown Wichita museums, Old Cowtown, the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve to the northeast. Smaller private parks in and around Mount Hope are useful for RVers who want a quiet overnight before pushing on across I-135 or US-54.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Cheney Reservoir fills with boaters and lakeside sites book out for weekends and holidays. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for touring: mild days, cool nights, and lower demand at private parks. Late spring can bring severe thunderstorms and tornado risk across south-central Kansas, so renters should monitor NWS Wichita alerts and know their campground's shelter plan. Winter camping is possible but stripped down. Water is turned off for the winter season at all utility campgrounds, bathrooms, shower houses, and dump stations at Cheney State Park, typically from mid-October through spring. The utility campgrounds still have electric available, and the only campground with both water and electric during winter is Smarsh Creek, sites 96-115. All sites during winter are first come, first served, with no reservations or online payments; visitors must stop by the park office to pay or use the self-pay station for single-night use. Private parks in the Mount Hope area typically stay open year-round with full hookups.

Expect open sky, wind, and long sight lines. Cheney Reservoir sites are largely exposed with limited mature shade, so awnings and generator-friendly cooling help in July and August. Cheney State Park offers water and electric hookups in seven utility campgrounds, dump stations, bath houses with showers, potable water, and level pads that accommodate tents through large RVs. Marina and Lakeside on the East Shore carry sites open year-round, with 30- and 50-amp service. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers across the Wichita metro and along US-54. Private parks near Mount Hope tend to be smaller and quieter than the state park, with gravel pads, standard 30 and 50 amp service, and easier access for first-time renters maneuvering a rig.
