Campgrounds and RV parks near North Newton, KS

The Sand Creek Trail runs along the east side of the Bethel College campus and connects to the Trail of Two Cities, a wide concrete path linking North Newton and Newton. It works well for walking, running, and family cycling, and passes Memorial Grove and The Plainsman sculpture near the main trailhead. Kauffman Museum on the Bethel College campus interprets Mennonite settlement history and Kansas prairie ecology, and the Warkentin House in Newton preserves an 1886 residence in strong original condition. Sand Creek Station Golf Course is a public course a short drive away. For water and outdoor recreation, Harvey County East Park offers fishing, boating, a swim beach, and walking, running, and horseback riding trails around the 314-acre lake, and a dedicated Pet Swim Park introduced in 2023 provides a fenced-in beach play area for pets with direct water access.

Late spring through early fall is the primary RV season in this part of Kansas. April through June brings green prairie, warm days, and the region's wettest stretch, with May and June typically the peak rainfall months. Severe thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches are part of spring travel here, so RVers should monitor local warnings and know the nearest sturdy shelter at their campground. Summer runs hot and humid, with daytime highs often in the 90s Fahrenheit and warm nights. Shaded lakeside sites at Harvey County East Park are in demand, and Harvey County seasonal permits are valid April 1 through November 15, aligning the main camping window with the warm season. Fall is often the most comfortable season, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower rainfall. Bethel College's long-running Fall Festival in October draws visitors to North Newton. Winter camping is possible at some private parks, but cold snaps with wind and occasional snow are common, and county park activity slows sharply outside the seasonal permit window.

North Newton itself is a small, largely residential community, so most groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supply runs happen in Newton just to the south. Interstate 135 runs along the west side of both cities, making arrivals and departures straightforward for larger rigs. Expect open, windy conditions typical of the central plains, with limited natural windbreaks at some sites. At Harvey County East Park, the campground features both 50-amp and 30-amp electrical hookups, with 50-amp sites located on the inner loop and lakeside sites offering 30-amp service, and the park has three restrooms, two of which are bathhouses. Cell coverage is reliable in and around town and adequate at the county parks. Lake conditions can shift seasonally. The lake at East Park has been under harmful algal bloom warnings that close swim beach areas and prohibit motorized boating, though canoeing, kayaking, and fishing remain allowed with precautions, so check current Harvey County Parks advisories before arrival.
