Camping near Parsons, Kansas
Parsons sits in Labette County in southeast Kansas, within short driving distance of Elk City Reservoir. RV travelers typically use the city as a base for lake recreation, prairie hiking, and stops along US-400 and US-59. Full-hookup private parks operate inside and just outside town, while state park loops sit roughly 30 to 40 minutes west near Independence.
Mission RV Park, Buckeye Estates & RV Park, and Buckeye RV Park handle most of the in-town demand, offering paved or gravel pads suited to longer stays and pull-through access for larger rigs. These parks tend to stay open year-round and cater to a mix of overnight travelers and monthly guests.
For lake-based camping, Elk City State Park covers 857 acres on the east shore of the 4,500-acre Elk City Reservoir, with a 12,000-acre wildlife area nearby, and offers a compact, family-oriented layout with quick access to boat ramps, a swim beach, playgrounds, and hiking trails. Prairie Meadow and Timber Road are the primary reservable loops used by RV campers.
Things to do around Parsons
Elk City Reservoir anchors most outdoor plans. Boating, bank fishing for crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and white bass, and swim-beach days fill the summer calendar, and the shoreline stays productive for anglers into fall.
Hikers have several distinct options within a short drive. The area is known for a diverse trail system including the Eagle Rock Mountain Bike Trail, the Post-Oak and Green Thumb Nature Trails, the Table Mound Hiking Trail, and the Osage Lowlands Hiking Trail, plus the nearby Elk River Hiking Trail, a 15-mile route running from the west end of the dam to the US-160 bridge over the Elk River south of Elk City. Table Mound and Elk River are the best-known routes for families with older kids.
In Parsons itself, city parks and local heritage events give travelers easy in-town breaks between longer excursions.

December - February
46° / 28°F 50 mmCold, relatively dry; limited winter camping demand
Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. May and June bring the greenest prairie and highest lake levels, but they also bring the wettest weather of the year and occasional severe storms, so travelers should watch forecasts and pick sites with good drainage.
Midsummer runs hot and humid, with afternoon highs commonly in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit. Early mornings on the water and shaded loops at Elk City State Park make the heat manageable. September and October are widely considered the most comfortable months: warm days, cool nights, lower humidity, and reduced storm activity.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Elk City State Park stays open year-round, but certain services may be reduced during off-peak seasons, and site accessibility can be affected by weather, so conditions should be checked before a trip. Private parks in Parsons generally maintain full hookups through the cold months for travelers who need them.
How to book
State park sites at Elk City, including the Prairie Meadow and Timber Road loops, are reserved through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Travelers select a specific site, dates, and hookup type online, or reserve by phone. Camping fees do not include the required State Park Vehicle Permit, which can be purchased upon entering the park.
Cancellation terms are strict and worth reading before booking. For campsites, cancellation or no-show within two days of arrival results in no refund, cancellation 3 to 14 days out forfeits the reservation fee, one night of stay fees, and a change fee, and cancellations 15 or more days ahead lose only the reservation and change fees.
Mission RV Park, Buckeye Estates & RV Park, and Buckeye RV Park are booked directly with the property by phone or through their listings. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first.
What to expect on the ground
In-town parks near Parsons are set up for practical RV stays rather than resort amenities. Expect level pads, standard 30 and 50 amp service, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. Rigs of most sizes fit, but callers should confirm length limits and slide clearance when booking.
At Elk City State Park, loops are more rustic. The park offers primitive sites, utility sites with water and electric hookups, modern restrooms and showers, plus picnic tables, fire rings, dump stations, and boat ramps. Shade varies by loop, and some pads are pull-through while others require backing on uneven ground.
Pets are typically allowed in Kansas State Parks but must be kept on a leash and under control at all times, and owners must clean up after them. Cell coverage in Parsons is generally solid; expect weaker signal in some lake loops.

Because Parsons is a smaller market than Wichita or Kansas City, you'll find genuinely cheap RV rental Parsons options compared to bigger metros, and many hosts include generous mileage allowances. travelks.com/places-to-visit/cities/parsons/What license do I need to rent an RV in Parsons, KS?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Parsons for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. Kansas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for motorhomes or combinations exceeding 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which almost no peer-to-peer rentals come close to. Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers on the platform all fall well under that threshold. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identification (ID) during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license and you're set for a smooth Kansas RV trip.
