Campgrounds and RV parks near Auxier, KY

Water recreation drives most trip plans. Paintsville Lake offers lake recreation with a marina, ADA-accessible boat launch, and opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, jet skiing, and water skiing, with bass fishing tournaments run throughout the year and the lake regularly stocked with trout. Yatesville Lake occupies a peninsula setting with three islands and averages 40 feet in depth, and the 2,300-acre lake offers good bluegill, bass and crappie fishing. The park also includes the Eagle Ridge Golf Course and a full-service marina with pontoon and john boat rentals, picnic shelters, bait, fishing licenses, a ships' store, a 4-lane boat ramp and 147 boat slips. Nearby cultural stops include Loretta Lynn's birthplace at Butcher Hollow in nearby Van Lear, the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, the Samuel May House, and the Country Music Highway Museum along US 23.

The Kentucky State Parks system flags Paintsville Lake's peak season as April 1 through October 31 with a 2-night minimum stay required on Friday and Saturday nights. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book heaviest, and holiday weekends at popular lake parks routinely sell out months in advance. Spring brings songbird migration and moderate temperatures suited to hiking, though rainfall is elevated and Appalachian storm cells can develop quickly. Summer is warm and humid with reliable lake conditions for boating and swimming. Fall delivers cooler nights and hardwood color across the ridges, typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter access varies. Paintsville Lake is listed as open year round, though sources indicate the Yatesville Lake campground operates on a more seasonal schedule tied to freezing temperatures. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at its campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers should contact the park directly for available resources if traveling during months conducive to freezing temperatures.

State park campgrounds in this region generally offer utility hookups on gravel pads, central bathhouses with showers, laundry access, and dump stations. The Paintsville Lake campground has 32 sites on gravel pads with a max length of 48 feet and a 14-night max stay, so larger fifth wheels and Class A rigs fit but should confirm the specific site. Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 occupants, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the hollows and along lake shorelines. Verizon has been reported as touchy at Paintsville Lake with better signal, one bar and LTE, out in the recreation area. Wi-Fi is not a given at state park sites. Golf carts are allowed in Kentucky State Park campgrounds by purchasing a permit at check-in, and leashed pets are allowed at most sites.
