Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort Campbell North, KY

The area is built around water and history. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley together offer hundreds of miles of shoreline for fishing, boating, and swimming, with public boat ramps scattered across Land Between the Lakes. Bass, crappie, and catfish are the main draws, and summer water temperatures typically sit in the seventies. Inside Land Between the Lakes, families can drive the Elk and Bison Prairie, tour the 1850s Homeplace working farm, and catch programs at the Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory. Bike trails, an archery range, and a swimming beach are clustered around Piney Campground on the south end. History stops include Fort Donelson National Battlefield in nearby Dover, Tennessee, and the antique shops that line downtown Cadiz. Clarksville adds movie theaters, restaurants, and Dunbar Cave State Park for a rainy-day option.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the upper fifties into the mid-seventies, wildflowers bloom along LBL trails, and campgrounds are open but not yet crowded. May is historically the rainiest month, averaging around 127 mm of rainfall, so bring rain gear and expect occasional thunderstorms. Summer runs hot and humid. July highs average around 87 degrees Fahrenheit, and dew points stay uncomfortable overnight. This is peak lake season: reservations at Piney, Hillman Ferry, and Lake Barkley State Resort Park fill quickly, and weekend sites often book weeks in advance. Storm activity is common in the afternoons. Fall brings the most comfortable camping weather, with September highs in the low eighties easing into cool sixties by November. Winters are cold and damp: overnight lows dip into the upper twenties, and Kentucky State Parks caution that water and other resources at campgrounds cannot be guaranteed during months when freezing temperatures are possible. Piney Campground is open March through November, and other developed LBL campgrounds follow a similar seasonal calendar.

Most private RV parks in this corridor sit close to Interstate 24, which means quick access but noticeable highway noise, particularly at sites near the road. Full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service are standard at the private parks in the area, and pull-throughs typically accommodate larger rigs. Public campgrounds inside Land Between the Lakes trade amenities for setting. Piney and Hillman Ferry offer electric sites, showers, and camp stores, while self-service campgrounds use a fee-envelope system deposited in an iron ranger at the entrance, with basic amenities such as designated pads, picnic tables, grills, fire rings, vault toilets, trash pickup, lake access, and boat ramps. Cell service can be limited in parts of LBL, so plan accordingly. Expect shaded, sometimes uneven sites at state parks, ticks and mosquitoes in warm months, and deer-heavy wildlife around dawn and dusk. Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky, part of an effort to prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer.
