Campgrounds and RV parks near Morehead, KY

Morehead sits in the foothills of eastern Kentucky, roughly 60 miles east of Lexington along Interstate 64. The town is the closest population center to Cave Run Lake and the northern reach of Daniel Boone National Forest, which together anchor most camping in the area. The forest's Cumberland Ranger District administers the shoreline, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversees the dam and tailwater below it. RV travelers have a mix of private parks and public sites to choose from. Sheltowee RV Park and Cabins, Landing Strip RV Park, and Outpost RV Park and Campground offer full-service private stays close to town and lake access. Little Sandy Lodge provides another option toward the Grayson Lake corridor east of Morehead. For riders traveling with horses, the Equestrian Campground at Carter Caves State Resort Park, about 30 miles northeast near Olive Hill, is the closest dedicated horse camp. The surrounding national forest also holds federal campsites and dispersed areas usable by smaller rigs.

Federal campgrounds around Cave Run Lake, including Twin Knobs and Zilpo, are reserved through Recreation.gov. Reservations open up to 6 months in advance, and peak-season sites should be booked as early as possible. Reserved sites are held until noon the day following the arrival date, after which unclaimed sites may be released. Carter Caves State Resort Park uses the Kentucky State Parks ReserveAmerica system, with a 12-month booking window and a minimum one-day advance requirement. The Equestrian Campground is different: from March 1 through October 31, sites are reservable only by calling the park directly at 606-286-4411. From November 1 through the end of February, those sites can also be booked online. Non-equestrian campers must wait until 10 days before arrival to book those sites.
