Pine Knot camping overview
Pine Knot sits in McCreary County on the Cumberland Plateau, minutes from the Kentucky portion of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The town works well as a base for RV renters because two major public land systems overlap here: the National Park Service manages Big South Fork, and Kentucky State Parks manages nearby Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.
Closest developed camping is at Cumberland Falls State Park - Main, the main hookup loop, with Cumberland Falls State Park - Cliffy handling tent-focused sites nearby. Blue Heron - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area and Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area lie inside Big South Fork itself, while Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA offers a second equestrian option on the Kentucky side.
RV renters get a mix of developed hookup loops at the state park and more rustic, forested sites at the federal campgrounds. Terrain is hilly and wooded, so rig length limits matter, with an absolute 30-foot maximum in the state park campgrounds.
Things to do near Pine Knot
The main draw is Cumberland Falls itself, a wide curtain of water often called the Niagara of the South. The falls are one of the few places in the western hemisphere where a moonbow can frequently be seen on nights with a full moon, and upcoming moonbow dates are listed on the park website. Eagle Falls, reached by a short but rugged trail, is a common half-day hike.
Big South Fork adds whitewater on the river, sandstone arches, and the Blue Heron interpretive coal-mining community, a rebuilt outdoor museum with audio presentations from former residents, reached by the Big South Fork Scenic Railway from Stearns. Horseback riders use the extensive trail network from Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area and Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA.

Summer is the busy season. Loops fill on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and holiday weekends book out months ahead. The Cumberland Falls State Park - Main campground operates from spring through the end of October, so late-fall and winter RV travelers have fewer developed options on the Kentucky side and often shift to Big South Fork sites that stay open on a limited basis.
Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV renters. Spring brings wildflowers and strong waterfall flow after rains, while October delivers hardwood color across the plateau. Bugs ease off, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking.
Seasonal amenities follow the calendar closely. Horseback riding at Cumberland Falls runs from Memorial Day weekend to October 31, and the swimming pool season is Memorial Day to Labor Day. Moonbow viewing is a year-round monthly event tied to the full moon, weather permitting.
How to book near Pine Knot
Cumberland Falls State Park - Main and Cumberland Falls State Park - Cliffy are booked through the Kentucky State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Summer weekends and moonbow dates go quickly, so book several months out for peak dates.
Blue Heron - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area, Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area, and Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA are National Park Service campgrounds inside Big South Fork and are reserved through Recreation.gov. Check length limits before booking: there is an absolute 30-foot maximum length limit for RVs in the Cumberland Falls campgrounds.
What to expect near Pine Knot
Expect narrow, winding approach roads through the Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork. Larger Class A rigs should map the route in advance and favor state highways over shortcuts. Cell service is spotty across the plateau and drops out entirely in the river gorge.
Sites are shaded and often on uneven ground, so leveling blocks are useful. Cumberland Falls provides a bath house with hot showers, flush restrooms, a dump station, and laundry facilities, and each site has a fire ring and picnic table. Blue Heron combines traditional woods camping with flush toilets, hot showers, and electric hookups, and sites accommodate both RVs and tents.
Firewood rules are enforced. Kentucky State Parks prohibits importing firewood from outside Kentucky to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds. Black bears frequent Blue Heron, so proper food storage is required.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pine%20Knot%2C%20KentuckyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Pine Knot, KY?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pine Knot, KY. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers booked through RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license, available from your local auto association for around $20. With that handled, you're set to explore Daniel Boone National Forest and the Big South Fork.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Pine Knot RV trip with confidence. Your specific cancellation details are confirmed during checkout. Booking early helps you secure the best rigs around Pine Knot, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room if plans shift.

Yes, RV delivery in Pine Knot is one of the best ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed before. Many RVezy hosts in southeastern Kentucky offer delivery and setup directly to campgrounds like Bandy Creek, Blue Heron, and Alum Ford, or to a private property or cabin rental in McCreary County. Your host arrives, levels the rig, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service, and check each listing for the delivery radius and fee (often $2 to $4 per mile beyond a free range). It turns your first motorhome rental in Pine Knot into a true walk-in vacation.

Reserve Bandy Creek and Blue Heron up to 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov for summer weekends, and book Cumberland Falls sites through the Kentucky State Parks site for full moon nights when the moonbow appears.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233927When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Pine Knot?

weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use it?

Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for orientation, and feel free to record video on your phone. You can message your host any time during the trip, and RVezy's support team is available to help. Do a short shakedown drive on US-27 near Pine Knot before heading into the curvier roads around the Big South Fork gorge so you get a feel for the rig's width and braking.

You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on KY-92, run out of fuel on US-27, or have a battery issue at Bandy Creek, one phone call gets help dispatched. Service includes tire changes, jump-starts, lockout assistance, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for quick advice on quirks specific to their RV. Cell coverage can be spotty deep inside the Big South Fork gorge, so download offline maps and note that you will usually get a signal back near Stearns, Whitley City, or Pine Knot itself.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Pine Knot, KY?
Pine Knot sits on a goldmine of routes. A great RV road trip from Pine Knot is the Big South Fork loop: head to Bandy Creek (about 25 miles), then over to Blue Heron Mining Community for the heritage railway. Another favorite is the Cumberland Falls and Lake Cumberland loop (about 110 miles round-trip) with the moonbow stop and houseboating country. For a longer haul, drive south to the Great Smoky Mountains via I-75 (about 140 miles, 3 hours) or up to Red River Gorge (about 160 miles, 3 hours) for sandstone arches and climbing. Cross-border travel into Tennessee is welcomed on RVezy rentals, and you can confirm any longer cross-border plans with your host before booking.
kentuckytourism.com/things-to-do/outdoors-adventureWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip around Pine Knot?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs here. McCreary County gas prices typically track close to or slightly below the Kentucky average. Campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs 6 to 9 MPG. For a 300-mile loop through Big South Fork and Cumberland Falls in a Class C, plan on roughly $100 to $140 in fuel based on current pump prices. Fill up in Whitley City or Williamsburg on US-25W or I-75 before heading into the Big South Fork backcountry, since stations get sparse once you drop into the gorge area.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pine Knot?
Booking early pays off, but you still have flexibility. For federal campgrounds like Bandy Creek and Blue Heron inside Big South Fork, reserve on Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead, especially for weekends from Memorial Day through mid-October. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park sites open on the Kentucky State Parks reservation system up to 13 months out and fill quickly for moonbow weekends. For weekday or shoulder-season trips in April, early May, or November, you can often book just 1 to 2 weeks ahead. If your first choice is booked, set a Recreation.gov alert: cancellations are surprisingly common, especially on Sundays as trips wrap up.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233927What are the roads like around Pine Knot for driving an RV?
You will find a mix of easy highways and scenic two-lanes. US-27 runs right through Pine Knot and is a wide, well-maintained route that handles any size RV comfortably. KY-92 west toward Stearns and the Big South Fork is narrower with some curves and grades, well suited to travel trailers and Class C rigs but a bit tighter for larger Class A motorhomes. The road into Blue Heron has a steep descent into the gorge, so go slow and use engine braking. Winter can occasionally bring ice on shaded curves. Avoid the gravel forest roads inside Daniel Boone National Forest unless your host has cleared it, and stick to paved access roads to your campground.
transportation.ky.gov/Travelers/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Pine Knot offer?
You will find a healthy range. Bandy Creek Campground offers electric and water hookups at many sites, hot showers, flush toilets, a swimming pool, and a dump station. Blue Heron Campground has electric and water hookups, showers, and a centralized dump station. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park offers 50-amp electric, water, dump stations, and a camp store. More primitive options like Alum Ford have vault toilets and no hookups, ideal for self-contained rigs. For freshwater fills and dumping between stops, the Pilot Travel Center in Williamsburg (about 25 minutes south on I-75) is a reliable option. Most Big South Fork sites are back-in only, so a smaller rig (under 32 feet) opens up more spots.
nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Pine Knot?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental in Pine Knot comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 7), a kitchen with a fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with a toilet and shower. Most include roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace, a TV, and many newer units have Wi-Fi boosters or starter solar setups. Seatbelts are provided for the rated occupancy, so confirm the listing's seatbelt count matches your group. Generators are common on Class C and Class A rigs for off-grid use. Filter by Sleeps 6+ if you are bringing the family to Bandy Creek for a week.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pine%20Knot%2C%20KentuckyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in Pine Knot?
Hosts in the Pine Knot area offer plenty of useful extras. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, bike racks, and generators with fuel included. Mileage typically includes 100 to 150 miles per day with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, though you will also find RV rental with unlimited mileage options. Bundle linens, kitchen, and outdoor gear so you can fly into Knoxville or Lexington and walk straight into your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pine%20Knot%2C%20KentuckyHow do payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never exchange cash or checks with the host. You pay by credit or debit card at booking, with the charge typically split between a deposit at booking and the balance closer to your trip start. A refundable security deposit (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after your trip once the host confirms the RV is returned in good shape. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off in Pine Knot. Refill propane and dump tanks before returning, since hosts often charge a flat service fee otherwise.
