Campgrounds near Salyersville, Kentucky
Salyersville sits in Magoffin County in the foothills of eastern Kentucky, within reach of several lake-based state parks that anchor the region's RV camping. The town lies on the Mountain Parkway, which makes it a practical staging point for trips into the Appalachian foothills, Daniel Boone National Forest country, and the reservoirs that dot Johnson, Lawrence, and Knott counties.
Most RV renters base their trips around Kentucky State Parks facilities. Paintsville Lake State Park is on US 23 at the Staffordsville/Paintsville exit in Johnson County, reached from the Mountain Parkway by taking the 460 exit out of Salyersville into Paintsville. Carr Creek State Park sits about 15 miles southeast of Hazard on KY 15 in Knott County, and Yatesville Lake State Park lies to the northeast near Louisa in Lawrence County.
Private options round out the mix. Little Sandy Lodge and Crockettsville RV Park offer smaller-scale hookups for renters who want simpler check-ins or a quieter base between park visits.
Things to do near Salyersville
Water recreation drives most trips. Paintsville Lake offers a marina, ADA-accessible boat launch, and opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, jet skiing, and water skiing, with bass tournaments running throughout the year and the lake regularly stocked with trout. Carr Creek State Park features the longest sand beach in the Kentucky State Parks system on its 750-acre lake, which supports bass, crappie, and walleye fishing.
Yatesville Lake State Park adds variety on land and water. The Pleasant Ridge Trail System has five separate wooded nature trails, and the Yatesville Lake Multi-Use Trail is a 20-plus-mile trail open to hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with bluegill, crappie, and bass fishing on the 2,300-acre lake itself.
Beyond the lakes, day trips reach Country Music Highway attractions, the Loretta Lynn Homeplace, and hiking in the wider Appalachian foothills.

Peak camping season in eastern Kentucky runs spring through fall. At Paintsville Lake, peak season runs from April 1 through October 31, with a two-night minimum stay required on Friday and Saturday nights. There is a one-night minimum stay during the week at all Kentucky state parks, and a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends at all parks except the Kentucky Horse Park.
Summer is the busiest window for lake activities and family trips, and it also tends to be the wettest stretch of the year in this part of the state. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures and lighter crowds, which is why many RVers target April, May, September, and October for hookup sites with lake views.
Winter camping is possible at year-round parks such as Paintsville Lake and Carr Creek, but with caveats. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers should contact the park directly for available resources during those months. Yatesville Lake Campground is closed from November 20 through March 31.
How to book campgrounds near Salyersville
Kentucky State Parks campgrounds are booked through a single reservation system. Reservations can be made through the Reserve America app or website, and Paintsville Lake Campground is open year round. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance.
Demand is real at the popular lake parks. Reservations for Paintsville Lake Campground are highly recommended, as the campground fills quickly, especially during peak season, with sites booking up months in advance and some campers reporting difficulty securing reservations across multiple seasons. Book weekends early, and consider midweek arrivals for better availability.
Private parks such as Little Sandy Lodge and Crockettsville RV Park are booked directly with the operator. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policy at the time of booking.
What to expect at eastern Kentucky campgrounds
State park campgrounds in this region are generally small, hookup-focused, and lake-adjacent. At Carr Creek, all sites include electric and water hookups and can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, with sites varying between open and shaded and the outer loop generally offering more room. Yatesville Lake Campground is a two-loop facility with the Greenbriar and Blaine Creek loops, gravel back-in driveways accommodating trailers up to 35 feet, water and 15/30/50 amp electrical hookups at every site, a picnic table and fire pit, and pet-friendly restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dump station.
Expect basic amenities done well rather than resort-style extras. Kentucky prohibits the importation of firewood from any state outside of Kentucky, to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in state park campgrounds. Max units per site is two and may include one camper unit plus one tent, or two tents if no camper is present.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Salyersville, KY. Kentucky does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels used recreationally, no matter the size. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll confirm your ID right through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to mail or notarize. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association, usually under $20. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, you can be road-ready in under ten minutes.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Salyersville RV trip?
Booking is low risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, so terms are consistent across every Salyersville listing. If plans change, your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the full policy is shown to you before you confirm and pay. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Because the cancellation policy is managed at the platform level, you will not see different rules on individual listings. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best motorhome rental in Salyersville for fall foliage season, then review the cancellation timeline in your booking confirmation so you know your flexibility window.

Bring a tie-out, plenty of water, and a towel for muddy creek paws, your dog will love the mountain air on your Salyersville RV trip.
parks.ky.gov/paintsville/parks/recreation/paintsville-lake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Salyersville?
Yes, RV delivery in Salyersville is one of the best ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at Paintsville Lake State Park, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, or even a private property in Magoffin County, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery typically runs $2 to $4 per mile round trip, with some hosts offering free local delivery within 15 miles of Salyersville. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination address. It's the easiest way to skip driving a big rig on KY Route 7 or the Mountain Parkway.

Summers run warm and humid (85 to 90 degrees) but are perfect for lake days at Paintsville. Winters can dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, cozy if your rental has a furnace and heated tanks. Pro tip: book the second weekend of October for peak color, it's magical and many hosts run shoulder-season deals.
weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in eastern Kentucky?
You'll do great, eastern Kentucky's roads are actually a friendly place to learn. Your host gives a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system before you leave, so no figuring it out alone. The main routes around Salyersville (US-460, the Mountain Parkway, KY-7) are paved two- to four-lane highways with manageable grades, though the hollows have some tight curves and steep driveways, so go slow and use lower gears descending. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome rental in Salyersville or a 22-foot travel trailer, or book a host who offers delivery. Pro tip: do a parking-lot practice loop in Salyersville before heading to Red River Gorge.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/Home.aspxWhat happens if I break down during my Salyersville RV trip?
You're covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so help is one call away even on a remote ridge road in Magoffin County. Roadside handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. If something mechanical pops up, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they often know their rig's quirks and can troubleshoot fast. The closest major service hubs are Prestonsburg (30 miles) and Pikeville (50 miles), both with RV-capable repair shops. Cell coverage is solid along US-460 and the Mountain Parkway but spotty in deeper hollows, so save offline maps before heading out. Knowing help is always available makes the adventure easier to enjoy.

parks.ky.gov/corbin/parks/resort/cumberland-falls-state-resort-parkWhat should I budget for fuel on a Salyersville RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, but it's easy to plan. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, travel trailers pulled by your truck average 10 to 14 mpg, and campervans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Kentucky gas prices typically run $0.20 to $0.40 below the national average, and Salyersville has convenient fuel stops along US-460 including the Pilot and Marathon stations near the Mountain Parkway interchange. For a 4-night loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Salyersville or Campton before heading into Red River Gorge, prices climb at the tourist-area stations and stations are sparse on KY-715.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Salyersville?
Booking ahead is the secret to a smooth Salyersville RV trip. For Kentucky State Park campgrounds like Paintsville Lake, Jenny Wiley, and Grayson Lake, reserve through the official Kentucky State Parks reservation system, weekends in October can fill 4 to 6 weeks out. Private parks near Salyersville usually have weekday availability even last minute, but reserve weekends 2 to 3 weeks ahead. For Daniel Boone National Forest campgrounds such as Koomer Ridge in Red River Gorge, use Recreation.gov and book up to six months ahead for peak season. Pro tip: if everything looks booked, message a Salyersville RVezy host about delivery to private land, many hosts will set the rig up at a private site with hookups.
reservations.kystateparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Salyersville?
Driving is straightforward if you know what to expect. The Mountain Parkway (KY-9000/9009) is the main artery west to Lexington, a smooth four-lane with moderate grades, recently widened through Salyersville. US-460 runs east-west through town and is two lanes with some curves. The hollows and rural roads have narrow shoulders, occasional coal-truck traffic, and steep driveways, so larger rigs should stick to numbered routes. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, fog in the river valleys on cool mornings, and ice on bridges November through March. Cell service is strong on main highways but drops in hollows. Pro tip: avoid KY-7 north of Salyersville with rigs over 30 feet, take US-460 to US-23 instead for a smoother ride to Paintsville.

Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most full-service parks near Salyersville offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and laundry, with 4 Guys RV Park and Sandy Springs RV Campground both providing all of these plus Wi-Fi. Kentucky State Park campgrounds (Paintsville Lake, Jenny Wiley) include central dump stations, potable water fill, picnic tables, and fire rings. For dumping between stops, German Bridge Camping Area and Westgate RV Campground both have public dump stations. Free freshwater fill is available at most state park entrance stations for a small fee. Pro tip: Jenny Wiley has a full-service marina and restaurant on site, perfect for a no-cook night halfway through your trip.
parks.ky.gov/prestonsburg/parks/resort/jenny-wiley-state-resort-parkWhat features and amenities come with a Salyersville RV rental?
Salyersville RV rentals come loaded for comfort. Expect a queen or king bed, bunk options in family-size Class C motorhomes, a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, a wet or dry bath with hot water, dinette and sofa seating with seatbelts for travel, roof A/C, propane furnace, and a TV in most rigs. Many hosts include outdoor chairs, a propane grill, leveling blocks, and a starter kit of sewer hose and water gear. Generators are common on Class A and Class C rentals, useful for boondocking on Daniel Boone National Forest roads. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes offered as add-ons. Pro tip: confirm with your host whether linens and cookware are included, most Salyersville hosts include them free or for a small fee.
kentuckytourism.com/salyersvilleWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offer a range of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include delivery and setup ($2 to $4 per mile), generator use (often $5 to $10 per hour beyond included hours), bike racks, outdoor grills, camp chairs, linens and kitchen kits ($25 to $75 flat), portable Wi-Fi hotspots, and pet fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Salyersville, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation covering driving, hookups, and tanks. Dropoff is usually before noon on your final day, refilled with fuel and propane, tanks emptied at a dump station. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing. Pro tip: ask for the dump-and-fill package, several Salyersville hosts will handle tank service for around $50 so you can return the rig and head home.
kentuckytourism.com/salyersvilleHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, never directly to the host. Your total includes the nightly rate, service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit (amount set by the host and shown on the listing) is held separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough video walkaround with your host at pickup, follow the dump and refuel instructions, and report anything unusual through in-app messaging so it is documented. Pro tip: keep gas and propane receipts from your final fill in Salyersville for fast verification at dropoff.
