Camping near West Van Lear, Kentucky
West Van Lear sits in Johnson County in eastern Kentucky's Big Sandy region, a short drive from Paintsville and the surrounding Appalachian foothills. The area is anchored by two US Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs managed with the Kentucky State Parks system: Paintsville Lake and Yatesville Lake. Both host lakeside campgrounds with marinas and boat ramps.
Paintsville Lake State Park sits along the shores of the 1,139-acre Paintsville Lake in Johnson County, roughly a 15-minute drive from West Van Lear. Yatesville Lake State Park lies near Louisa in Lawrence County, with a 2,300-acre lake and an average depth of about 40 feet.
Private options fill in the gaps. Creekside Cabins and RV Park in Louisa offers cabins and RV sites along KY 3 near Fallsburg. The Falls Campground sits about half a mile away in the Fallsburg community, with Big Blaine Creek running through the property. Little Sandy Lodge rounds out lodging-style stays for RV travellers who want a base for exploring the region.
Things to do near West Van Lear
Water recreation drives most trips. Paintsville Lake hosts bass fishing tournaments year-round and is regularly stocked with trout by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, with an ADA-accessible boat launch at the park. Yatesville Lake supports houseboats, pontoons, speed boats, and jet skis across its 2,300 acres, plus well-regarded bluegill, crappie, and bass fishing.
On land, the Yatesville Lake Multi-Use Trail runs more than 20 miles and is open to hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The Pleasant Ridge Trail System adds five shorter wooded nature loops, and the park's 18-hole Eagle Ridge Golf Course is part of the Kentucky State Park Signature Series.
Families can visit the Mountain Homeplace living-history site and the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum, both near Paintsville.

Peak camping season at Paintsville Lake State Park runs April 1 through October 31, with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday nights. The Paintsville Lake campground is open year-round, but Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water availability during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so late-fall through early-spring arrivals should call the park to confirm hookups.
Yatesville Lake's Pleasant Ridge Campground follows the same policy, with water service reduced or shut off during freezing months. The lake itself stays open year-round for boating and fishing.
Spring and fall bring mild weather and lighter crowds. Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest, especially lakefront full-hookup sites, which regularly book months in advance. Fall colour typically peaks in mid to late October across the eastern Kentucky foothills, and the Kentucky Apple Festival in Paintsville draws crowds the first full weekend in October.
How to book campgrounds near West Van Lear
Paintsville Lake and Yatesville Lake state park campgrounds are booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, online or by phone. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Lakefront and full-hookup sites at Paintsville often book months out for summer weekends.
Each state park site allows a maximum of eight occupants and up to two units, such as one RV plus one tent. Golf carts require a permit purchased at check-in. Firewood cannot be brought in from outside Kentucky, but it is sold on-site.
Creekside Cabins and RV Park, The Falls Campground, and Little Sandy Lodge book directly through the operator rather than through a state reservation portal.
What to expect on-site
Paintsville Lake Campground is a compact 32-site layout with mostly back-in gravel pads, water, electric, and sewer at most sites, plus a bathhouse with showers, laundry, and a playground. Maximum RV length is around 48 feet, and cellular signal is spotty inside campers but usable in the recreation area.
Yatesville Lake's Pleasant Ridge Campground has 27 full-hookup sites plus 20 primitive sites, including boat-in and hike-in options. Standard sites are gravel back-ins with water and electric, and typical RV length limits run to about 35 feet. A dump station, laundry, playground, and boat ramp are on-site.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain. Sites are generally level but check length limits when booking a big rig, and plan for a leashed-pet policy at most parks.

parks.ky.gov/paintsville/parks/recreation/paintsville-lake-state-parkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in West Van Lear, Kentucky?

No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll confirm your ID through the platform during checkout, which usually takes just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the US? Booking feels low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the host. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, giving you time to finalize plans without pressure. If life happens, weather turns, or something unexpected pops up like a flash flood warning in the Big Sandy Valley, refund options depend on how far out you cancel and the circumstances involved. You will see the full details during the booking flow and in your RVezy account. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best rigs for popular weekends like the Kentucky Apple Festival in nearby Paintsville, then adjust later if needed.

Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which you'll see upfront before booking. Pro tip: message the host to confirm dog size and ask about their favorite local pet-friendly spots, they often have insider recommendations.
parks.ky.gov/dawkins-line/parks/recreation/dawkins-line-rail-trailCan the RV be delivered to my campground near West Van Lear?
Yes, RV delivery in West Van Lear is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drive the rig directly to Paintsville Lake State Park, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, or even a private property in the Big Sandy area, then set it up, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing through twisty Route 23 mountain curves your first time out. Delivery fees vary by distance, and many hosts offer free delivery within a set radius of Van Lear. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery to Dewey Lake, it's a stunning launching point for a Kentucky RV trip.

parks.ky.gov/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from West Van Lear?
Eastern Kentucky has a long, comfortable RV season. The sweet spot is mid-April through late October, with highs in the 70s and 80s and lush green Appalachian scenery. Spring (April to May) brings dogwood and redbud blooms across the hills. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s, perfect for lake days at Dewey Lake or Paintsville Lake. Fall (mid-September through late October) is the showstopper: vibrant red, orange, and gold foliage blankets the Daniel Boone National Forest. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so most casual RVers wrap up by November. Pro tip: book early October for peak leaf-peeping along the Country Music Highway.
weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in eastern Kentucky?
You've got this, and you're not on your own. First time renting an RV? Your host will give you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, generator, slide-outs, and everything else, usually 30 to 60 minutes. The roads around Van Lear include US-23 (the Country Music Highway), which is a well-maintained 4-lane route ideal for new RVers heading north or south. Stick to main highways like US-23 and the Mountain Parkway your first time, and save twistier backroads like KY-40 for later. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they handle more like a large truck than the big Class A rigs.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/Home.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is just a phone call away if you get a flat near Pikeville, run into battery trouble at Jenny Wiley, or need a tow off the Mountain Parkway. For mechanical or system questions like the water heater or awning, your host is your first call, they know their rig inside and out and usually respond fast. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: snap a photo of the host contact info and save the roadside number to your phone before leaving the pickup spot.

Push about 220 miles south to Cumberland Falls, known as the Niagara of the South, and its famous moonbow. Or go roughly 290 miles to Mammoth Cave National Park. Cross-border trips into West Virginia and Virginia are easy and fully allowed, just confirm with your host. Pro tip: RVezy rentals cannot cross into Mexico due to insurance coverage limits, so keep your road trip within the US and Canada.
nps.gov/maca/index.htmWhat kind of fuel economy and budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel for a Kentucky RV trip is straightforward. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined), and campervans get 15 to 20 MPG. Gas in eastern Kentucky usually runs slightly below the national average, often $0.10 to $0.20 cheaper per gallon than urban areas. From West Van Lear, a round trip to Red River Gorge (about 240 miles) in a Class C will run roughly $80 to $110 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Paintsville or Prestonsburg before heading into the Daniel Boone National Forest, station options thin out fast once you're deep in the hills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near West Van Lear?
Lock in campgrounds early for the best pick. Kentucky State Parks (including Paintsville Lake, Jenny Wiley, and Carter Caves) take reservations up to 11 months out through their official online reservation system. For summer weekends and fall foliage season (late September through late October), aim to book at least 2 to 3 months ahead. Midweek stays are easier and you can often snag a spot just a week out. Private parks around Van Lear and Paintsville generally have more flexibility. Pro tip: if Jenny Wiley is full, try a smaller lakeside spot at Paintsville Lake State Park, it's often overlooked and just as scenic for your motorhome rental West Van Lear adventure.
reservations.kystateparks.com/What are the local driving conditions like around West Van Lear?
Driving around West Van Lear is manageable and scenic, with a few things to know. US-23 (the Country Music Highway) is the main 4-lane corridor and is RV-friendly with gentle grades. Smaller routes like KY-302 and KY-40 wind through Appalachian hollows with tight curves and steeper climbs, take these slow in larger rigs. Coal trucks share these roads, so allow extra following distance. Fog can settle in valleys during early mornings, especially in spring and fall. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through February. Pro tip: use Brake-checks and lower gears descending hills near Pikeville and Prestonsburg, and avoid downtown Paintsville's narrow side streets in anything bigger than a Class C.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/Home.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near West Van Lear?
Campgrounds around Van Lear are well-equipped for a smooth trip. Paintsville Lake State Park offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at most sites, plus a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, and laundry. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park has 30/50-amp electric, water, a central dump station, beach access, and a marina. Carter Caves provides electric and water sites with a shared dump station. Cell service is generally good on Verizon and AT&T near the lakes but spotty deep in the hollows. Pro tip: top off freshwater at the campground before you leave, eastern Kentucky's mountain backroads don't have many RV fill stations, so arrive at your next stop with a full tank.
parks.ky.gov/paintsville/parks/recreation/paintsville-lake-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with RVs in West Van Lear?
RVs on RVezy near West Van Lear come well-equipped for comfortable Appalachian adventures. Expect comfortable beds (queens are most common, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), full kitchens with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, indoor bathrooms with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and travel trailer rentals, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for travel. Many rigs include TVs, some have generators for off-grid stays, and a growing number offer onboard WiFi or hotspots, great for streaming after a day on the Dawkins Line Rail Trail. Pro tip: if you are planning to boondock or stay at a no-hookup site, filter for RVs with solar panels or a built-in generator so you can run the AC and fridge worry-free.

Mileage policies vary: most hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage fees around $0.25 to $0.45 per mile, and some list unlimited mileage. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Van%20Lear%2C%20KentuckyHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy, with no cash or off-platform transfers needed. You pay your rental total (nightly rate, fees, renter protection plan, and any add-ons) at booking with a credit or debit card. The security deposit is a separate temporary hold placed before your trip starts and released after the trip ends, assuming no damage or major cleaning issues. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, this protects both you and the host and makes deposit returns smooth and fast, so you can focus on enjoying your family RV trip West Van Lear adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in West Van Lear during winter?
Yes, and winter in eastern Kentucky has its own quiet beauty. Several hosts around Van Lear offer cold-weather-ready rigs with insulated tanks, electric heaters, and propane furnaces, ideal for crisp adventures into the snow-dusted Daniel Boone National Forest. Daytime temps from December through February typically range from the 30s to mid-40s, dipping to the teens or 20s at night. Plan for shore power (30/50-amp electric hookups) at parks like Jenny Wiley, which stays open year-round with limited winter sites. Use the freshwater tank instead of exterior hookups when temps drop below freezing to avoid frozen hoses. Pro tip: book a heated rig and chase a snow-dusted moonbow viewing at Cumberland Falls in January, it's pure magic.
