Chisholm camping overview
Chisholm is a village within the town of Jay in Franklin County, western Maine, set along the Androscoggin River in the state's Lakes and Mountains region. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the western foothills, with Farmington and its university town amenities about fifteen minutes north and Mount Blue State Park roughly forty minutes northwest in Weld. The surrounding landscape is forested and hilly, with rivers, lakes, and hiking peaks including Mount Blue and Tumbledown Mountain within easy driving distance.
Campground options near Chisholm range from small family-run parks to a larger resort-style destination farther south. Troll Valley Campground in Farmington offers full hookups and an on-site disc golf course, while Riverbend Campground and Honey Run Beach and Campgrounds provide riverside and lakeside sites in the wider region. For families seeking more amenities, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Augusta sits about an hour east near the state capital.
Things to do around Chisholm
Outdoor recreation drives most visits. Mount Blue State Park covers roughly 7,500 acres in nearby Weld and offers hiking on Mount Blue and Tumbledown Mountain, a sand beach and swimming on Webb Lake, boat and canoe launches, and more than twenty miles of multi-use trails open to ATVs, horses, and mountain bikes. Center Hill provides scenic overlooks and a shorter interpretive trail.
Closer to Chisholm, the Androscoggin and Sandy rivers draw paddlers and anglers, and Coos Canyon on the Swift River in Byron is a popular stop for swimming and gold panning. Farmington adds restaurants, grocery stops, and the University of Maine at Farmington campus, while Titcomb Mountain offers hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

The core RV season in western Maine runs from mid-May through mid-October. Most private campgrounds in the area, including Troll Valley Campground, operate on a seasonal schedule that opens after the last hard frosts and closes before winter. Mount Blue State Park's Webb Beach campground follows a similar pattern, with the park itself open year-round for day use but camping generally available from Memorial Day weekend into the fall.
July and August are the busiest months, when warm days, swimming, and hiking bring the strongest demand and reservations are essential on weekends. June can still be cool and buggy, with black flies and mosquitoes most active from late May through late June. September and early October bring fall foliage, cooler nights, and quieter campgrounds, and are a favorite window for RV travelers who want the scenery without the crowds. Winter camping options are limited, and most sites and services shut down by late October.
Booking campgrounds near Chisholm
Mount Blue State Park campground reservations are handled through the Maine State Parks reservation system at campwithme.com, or by phone at 1-800-332-1501 in state and 207-624-9950 from outside Maine. Bookings for the upcoming season open online in February, and popular summer weekends fill quickly.
Private campgrounds in the area are booked directly with the operator. Troll Valley Campground takes reservations by phone or through its website and Campspot, while Riverbend Campground and Honey Run Beach and Campgrounds are best contacted through their own websites. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Augusta uses its own online booking system, and holiday weekends there tend to sell out well in advance.
What to expect at Chisholm campgrounds
Sites in this part of Maine are typically wooded, with a mix of gravel and grass pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Full hookups are available at Troll Valley Campground, including 30 and 50 amp service, water, sewer, and on-site dump station, along with pull-through sites that can accommodate big rigs up to about forty feet. Wi-Fi and cell coverage vary, with Verizon generally the most reliable carrier in the western foothills.
Mount Blue State Park offers a more rustic experience, with wooded sites, hot showers, an RV dump station, and a sand beach, but no individual hookups. Expect black flies in early summer and cool nights even in July, and bring layers along with bug protection.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Chisholm, ME
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Chisholm, ME?
An RV rental in Chisholm is one of the most affordable ways to explore Western Maine. On RVezy, expect roughly $95 to $165 per night for travel trailers, $125 to $200 for campervans, and $175 to $275 for Class C motorhomes, depending on age, size, and season. Mid-week stays in May, June, and late September are noticeably cheaper than peak July and August. To find a cheap RV rental in Chisholm, filter by Instant Book, look for trailers with delivery included, and book 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Pro tip: travel during the shoulder season around Maine's fall foliage peak in early October near the Androscoggin River for lower rates and unforgettable color.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chisholm,MaineDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Chisholm, Maine?
Great news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Chisholm. Maine does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers available on RVezy. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old and upload a clear photo of your valid license through RVezy's secure ID verification during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how simple the paperwork is, so you can focus on planning your Maine RV trip instead of red tape.
maine.gov/sos/bmv/licenses/index.htmlWhat protection and roadside assistance are included with my Chisholm RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Chisholm on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one call away if you get a flat on Route 4 or need a jump start at the campground. During checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, from essential to premium coverage that handles most accidental damage to the RV. Roadside assistance covers tows, flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, and fuel delivery. You pick the level, not the host, so you can dial in exactly the comfort you want before heading toward Rangeley or Bethel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Chisholm RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, not the host, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far out your trip is and certain qualifying circumstances. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip, so reach out early and they'll walk you through your options for your motorhome rental in Chisholm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Chisholm?
Absolutely, this is a fantastic region for traveling with pets. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Chisholm options, and you can find them in seconds using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Maine state parks like Mount Blue State Park in nearby Weld allow leashed pets in most areas, and the Androscoggin Riverlands State Park has miles of dog-welcoming paths south of Chisholm. Bring proof of rabies vaccination, which Maine requires for dogs in state park campgrounds. Pro tip: ask your host about a washable mat for muddy paws, since spring trails around the Androscoggin can stay damp into late May.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/rules_regulations/pets_in_parks.shtmlCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite or driveway in Chisholm?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many Chisholm-area hosts offer RV delivery directly to campgrounds, lake houses, or your home address, then handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough. This is perfect if you're new to RVing or planning a stationary stay at places like Mount Blue State Park or a private rental on Wilson Lake in nearby Wilton. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile round-trip, with some hosts including a free radius around Jay and Livermore Falls. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campsite number, and you can arrive with just your luggage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chisholm,MaineHow far can I drive, and are unlimited mileage rentals available in Chisholm?
You've got plenty of range for a great Chisholm RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles priced at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and you'll find listings on RVezy offering RV rental with unlimited mileage if you plan to roam farther. From Chisholm, popular drives include Rangeley Lakes (about 40 miles northwest), Bethel and Sunday River (around 40 miles west), Acadia National Park (about 175 miles east), Baxter State Park (around 170 miles north), and Portland (roughly 75 miles south). Map your route before booking and share it with your host, who can often suggest a mileage package that saves money on a longer RV road trip from Chisholm.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Chisholm,MaineWhere are the best campgrounds near Chisholm, ME?
You're spoiled for choice in this corner of Maine. Top picks for RV camping near Chisholm include Mount Blue State Park in Weld (about 20 miles north, with electric/water hookups and a beach on Webb Lake), Rangeley Lake State Park (about 45 miles northwest with hookup sites and lakefront swimming), and Poland Spring Campground (about an hour south, family-friendly with full hookups). Riverfront private parks along the Androscoggin offer quieter options closer to town. Pro tip: book Maine State Park sites the moment the reservation window opens (typically four months ahead) because lakeside spots disappear fast.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/reservations/index.shtmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Chisholm?
Late May through mid-October is prime time, with each window offering something special. June brings highs around 72°F and fewer bugs after the first couple of weeks; July and August are warmest with average highs near 80°F and warm lake swimming at Webb Lake and Wilson Lake. Early to mid-October is the secret weapon: crisp 55°F days, vibrant Androscoggin Valley foliage, and lower rates on a campervan rental Chisholm. Winters here are genuinely cold (January lows near 10°F), so most private campgrounds close by November 1. If you crave snowmobiling or ice fishing, a few hosts offer four-season rigs with heated tanks, so message ahead.
weather.gov/gyx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, and your host is your secret weapon. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump tanks. First time renting an RV around Chisholm? Start with a travel trailer under 24 feet or a Class C motorhome, both easy to handle on Route 4 and Route 108. The local roads are quiet, well-paved, and ideal for building confidence before bigger drives toward Rangeley. You can also message the host before booking with any questions, and RVezy support is available 24/7. Pro tip: ask the host to film a quick walkthrough video so you can rewatch it at camp.
maine.gov/mdot/safety/What happens if the RV breaks down during my Chisholm trip?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every Chisholm RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, handling tows, flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, and fuel delivery on roads from Route 2 to the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway. Your host is also a direct call away for quick questions like resetting the inverter or restarting the fridge. For anything more serious, contact RVezy support and they'll coordinate next steps, including potential repair or replacement options. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Chisholm, since cell service can be spotty deeper into Franklin or Oxford County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Chisholm RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to neighboring states, and often yes to Canada with a quick approval. Most hosts welcome trips throughout New England and New York, so you can easily plan a swing through New Hampshire's White Mountains (under 90 minutes west) or Vermont. Heading to Quebec or New Brunswick? Message the host before booking because cross-border travel requires their approval and confirmation that insurance/protection extends north of the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular cross-border runs from Chisholm include Quebec City (about 230 miles via Coburn Gore) and the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. Bring passports for everyone and confirm pet vaccination paperwork if Fido is along.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Maine RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable with a little planning. Class C motorhomes around Chisholm typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG). Maine gas prices typically run a touch above the national average, so budget around $4 per gallon when planning. A 250-mile loop to Rangeley, Bethel, and back to Chisholm in a Class C will likely cost $100 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Jay, Livermore Falls, or Farmington before heading into the Rangeley region, where stations are farther apart and prices climb in tourist season.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Chisholm?
Earlier is better, and Maine makes it easy. Maine State Parks open reservations on a rolling four-month window through the official Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands reservation system, so prime summer sites at Mount Blue and Rangeley Lake State Parks should be grabbed the day they open. Private campgrounds near Chisholm typically take reservations 6 to 12 months out, especially for July, August, and fall foliage weekends in early October. For a spontaneous trip, mid-week stays in June or late September are usually wide open. Pro tip: pair an Instant Book RV on RVezy with a same-week state park cancellation, since openings appear daily on the Maine reservation site.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/reservations/index.shtmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Chisholm?
Driving around Chisholm is refreshingly mellow, especially compared to big-city traffic. Route 4 and Route 108 are well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle grades through the Androscoggin Valley, ideal for first-time RVers. As you head west toward Bethel or northwest into the Rangeley region, you'll encounter winding mountain stretches with steeper grades, where downshifting helps your transmission. Watch for moose between dusk and dawn, especially May through July, and frost heaves in early spring that can roughen pavement. Winter trips (December through March) require snow tires and careful planning. Pro tip: avoid Route 17's Height of Land overlook in heavy rain or fog and save that scenic drive for a clear afternoon, you'll thank yourself.
maine.gov/mdot/travel/winter/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Chisholm?
You'll find a great mix of options. Maine State Parks like Mount Blue and Rangeley Lake offer electric and water hookups, hot showers, and dump stations, while private parks such as Lone Mountain Riverfront and Poland Spring Campground typically provide full hookups (electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. For dumping and filling fresh water between stops, you'll find dump stations at most Maine State Park campgrounds and many town transfer stations. Cell service is strong in Chisholm, Jay, and Farmington but drops off in the Rangeley high country. Pro tip: top off fresh water in town before heading to remote sites, and pack a 50-foot drinking-water hose since campsite spigots aren't always close.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/camping/rvs_and_campers.shtmlWhat's included inside a typical Chisholm RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how move-in ready these rigs are. Most RV rentals in Chisholm come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 2 to 6 people, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, heating, air conditioning, and a dinette. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator, perfect for boondocking near the Androscoggin or Webb Lake. Seatbelts for everyone traveling are standard. Hosts often add starter kits with linens, towels, and even fire-pit gear. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the photos closely for Wi-Fi hotspots, a nice perk if you're working remotely from the lake.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip in just a few clicks. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Chisholm, ME include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), portable grills, bike racks, kayaks, and propane refills. Most hosts offer pickup at their home in the Jay/Chisholm/Livermore Falls area, while many provide delivery within a 20 to 50 mile radius. Standard mileage allowances run 100 to 150 miles per night, with bundled mileage packages available for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first booking, you'll arrive at camp with nothing to do except light the fire.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/camping/index.shtmlHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Chisholm RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Chisholm through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from the booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned clean, undamaged, and with the correct fuel and tank levels. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off, follow the dump and refuel instructions in your walkthrough, and message the host through RVezy if anything looks off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent a winter-ready RV in Chisholm?
Yes, and winter in Western Maine is genuinely magical. Some Chisholm-area hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, extra insulation, and shore-power-ready setups for snowmobiling, ice fishing on Wilson Lake or Webb Lake, and skiing at nearby Sunday River (about 40 miles west) or Saddleback (around 50 miles northwest). Expect January highs around 25°F and lows near 10°F, so confirm with the host that the furnace, propane capacity, and water system are rated for sub-freezing use. Many winter renters opt for stationary delivery to a serviced site rather than driving snowy back roads. Pro tip: ask about a heated water hose and tank skirting, these two upgrades make a big difference for a comfortable winter Maine RV trip.
