Campgrounds and RV parks near Kittery, ME

The Kittery Outlets stretch along Route 1 with more than a hundred stores, and downtown Portsmouth is a short drive over Memorial Bridge for restaurants, breweries, and Strawbery Banke Museum. Fort Foster and Fort McClary offer waterfront trails, tide pools, and views across the Piscataqua and toward the Isles of Shoals. Beach days are easy from any Kittery-area campground. Long Sands and Short Sands in York are the closest sandy beaches, and Ogunquit Beach with the Marginal Way cliff walk lies about twenty minutes north. Families often build itineraries around York's Wild Kingdom zoo and amusement park, Nubble Lighthouse at Cape Neddick, and lobster shacks along Route 103. On-water options include kayaking the Brave Boat Harbor tidal marsh and deep-sea fishing or whale-watching charters from Rye Harbor on the New Hampshire seacoast.

Peak season runs from late June through Labor Day, when coastal temperatures are warm, ocean water is swimmable by regional standards, and every attraction is open. This is also when private campgrounds fill fastest, especially on holiday weekends and any weekend in July or August. Many parks in the area operate on a seasonal calendar, typically opening in mid-May and closing in mid-October, with Libby's Oceanside Camp running May 15 through the weekend after Columbus Day. Shoulder seasons offer real advantages for RVers. Late May and June bring wildflowers and lighter traffic, though black flies and mosquitoes are active inland. September and early October combine warm days, cool nights, and thinning crowds, and foliage inland peaks in mid-October. Winter is quiet. Most private campgrounds close, snow and freezing temperatures are common from December through February, and coastal storms can produce heavy rain, wind, and occasional flooding. Travelers wanting a winter base typically stay in year-round lodging rather than RV parks.

Sites near the coast tend to be closer together than inland parks, particularly at oceanfront properties where premium views come with less privacy. Wooded interior loops usually offer more shade and separation. Roads inside older parks can be tight, so travelers with larger fifth wheels or Class A rigs should confirm site length, pull-through availability, and low-branch clearance before booking. Thirty-amp service is standard, with fifty-amp available at many pull-throughs and oceanfront rows. Full hookups including cable are common at Route 1 parks, though some interior sites are water and electric only, with a central dump station on exit. Expect pool access, playgrounds, and camp stores at family parks, plus quiet hours after 10 p.m. Cell coverage is generally strong along the Route 1 corridor. Firewood must usually be purchased on site to comply with state rules against moving untreated wood.
