Campgrounds near Danvers
Danvers sits on Boston's North Shore, roughly 20 miles from downtown Boston and within easy reach of the Merrimack Valley, Cape Ann, and Boston Harbor. RV travelers use it as a base for coastal towns like Salem, Gloucester, and Newburyport while still being close to inland forest camping.
The nearest developed RV camping is at Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park in Andover, a Massachusetts DCR campground with 89 campsites for tents, trailers, or RVs, eleven of which have 20/30/50 amp hookups. Northeast of Danvers, Cape Ann Camp Site in Gloucester is a family-owned park with more than 200 unique sites ranging from tent spots to full-hookup RV sites, set in 80 acres of mature woodland overlooking the Annisquam River, one mile from Wingaersheek Beach. Farther north, Salisbury Beach State Reservation offers 484 campsites with water and electric hookups on a barrier beach at the mouth of the Merrimack River.
For a car-free island trip, Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island offers tent sites and yurts reached by ferry from Hingham. Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island is operated as an Outward Bound education center rather than a public campground.
Things to do around Danvers
Salem's witch-trial sites, museums, and waterfront are a short drive south, and Gloucester's working harbor, whale-watch fleet, and Rockport art colony are up Route 128. Families use Wingaersheek and Good Harbor beaches for swimming, and Crane Beach in Ipswich for long low-tide walks.
Harold Parker State Forest supports hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, horseback riding and picnicking across rolling hills, low-lying swampy areas, rock outcrops and several ponds. Salisbury Beach offers a 3.8-mile stretch of shoreline along the Atlantic plus two boat ramps on the Merrimack River at the campground's southern edge.
Peddocks Island has wooded campsites, miles of trails, and scenic beaches, with skyline views and the ruins of Fort Andrews to explore on foot.
