Campgrounds and RV parks near Edgartown, MA

Edgartown's historic whaling-era downtown, harbor, and lighthouse anchor the town, with South Beach and Katama Bay nearby for swimming, surf-casting, and paddling. The Chappaquiddick ferry runs continuously across the harbor to reach Wasque and East Beach on the eastern shore. Cycling is a defining island activity. Paved paths connect Edgartown to Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and West Tisbury, and Joseph Sylvia State Beach between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs offers calm, shallow water suited to families. On the Cape Cod mainland, guests at Peters Pond RV Resort and Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park swim, fish, and paddle on Peters Pond itself, with Sandy Neck barrier beach and Cape Cod National Seashore within easy driving distance. Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich is another nearby stop.

The Vineyard camping season is short. Martha's Vineyard Family Campground operates seasonally from May through October, and no year-round RV park exists on the island. Cape Cod parks follow a similar rhythm, with Peters Pond RV Resort typically open from mid-April through mid-October. July and August are peak. Steamship Authority vehicle reservations for summer weekends often sell out shortly after the reservation window opens in mid-January, and island campground sites fill along with them. Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August through October, and coastal storms can disrupt ferry crossings on short notice. Late spring and September deliver the most flexible trips. Sea-surface temperatures near Edgartown peak in mid-August around 70°F and remain swimmable into September, while daytime highs stay comfortable and mainland traffic thins. Winter closes nearly all campgrounds in the region, so RV travelers targeting the shoulder should aim for the May-June or September-October windows, when ferry space is easier to secure and beach towns are quieter.

Expect a ferry-driven trip. Rigs must fit Steamship Authority vehicle size limits, and larger fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes are harder to accommodate on the boats than smaller trailers and Class C rigs. Many travelers leave the RV at a Cape Cod park and take a passenger ferry over for day trips, which does not require a reservation on the traditional Vineyard boats. Sites at Martha's Vineyard Family Campground are wooded, with picnic tables and fireplaces. Hookups, restrooms with hot showers, a laundromat, a store, a recreation hall, and a playground are on site. Cape Cod pond-side parks lean resort-style, with pools, beaches, camp stores, and organized activities. Cell coverage is generally reliable across both the Cape and the Vineyard.
