Camping near Oak Bluffs
Oak Bluffs sits on the northeastern shore of Martha's Vineyard, an island reached by ferry from Woods Hole, Falmouth, Hyannis, or New Bedford. The island has exactly one campground: the family-owned Martha's Vineyard Family Campground in Vineyard Haven, roughly a ten-minute drive from Oak Bluffs. Every other acre is privately owned, conserved, or developed, and Land Bank, Trustees of Reservations, Mass Audubon, and Sheriff's Meadow properties all prohibit individual camping, with no National Forest or BLM land on the island.
Because on-island supply is capped at one property, most RV travelers base themselves on Cape Cod and day-trip across on the ferry. The camp-on-Cape-Cod, day-trip-to-Martha's-Vineyard strategy is well proven and practical. Sun Outdoors Cape Cod, Peters Pond RV Resort, Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park, and Bay View Campground all sit within a short drive of the Woods Hole or Hyannis ferry terminals and accommodate larger rigs.
Expect a mix of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and tent loops. Sites closer to Oak Bluffs book earliest; mainland Cape Cod parks offer more inventory and easier last-minute availability.
Things to do in Oak Bluffs
Oak Bluffs is best known for its Camp Meeting Grounds and Tabernacle, a dense circle of 19th-century gingerbread cottages around Trinity Park. The Camp Meeting Association hosts free concerts, guest speakers, and movie nights at the Tabernacle, so it is worth checking the event schedule before a visit. The Flying Horses Carousel, Ocean Park bandstand concerts, and the harbor promenade fill an easy afternoon with kids.
Beach days are the main draw. Inkwell Beach, State Beach along Beach Road, and Joseph Sylvia State Beach offer calm, family-friendly swimming. Rental bikes connect Oak Bluffs to Edgartown along a paved path.
On Cape Cod, guests staying at Peters Pond RV Resort or Sun Outdoors Cape Cod can add freshwater swimming, the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and Cape Cod National Seashore beaches to the itinerary.

The camping season on and around Martha's Vineyard is short. Martha's Vineyard Family Campground operates seasonally from May to October. Most Cape Cod campgrounds also run May through October, with limited shoulder-season openings. Outside these months, ferry schedules thin out and nearly all island lodging closes.
July and August are the busiest weeks of the year. Peak-season sites at the island campground sell out within days of the late-January reservation opening, and the cancellation policy is strict. Ferry vehicle reservations for the same window book out months in advance through the Steamship Authority.
Late May, June, and September are the best windows for RV travelers who want cooler nights, easier ferry space, and available sites. Fall brings clear days and cold nights; hurricane and nor'easter systems occasionally track up the coast between August and October, so watch forecasts closely.
How to book Oak Bluffs camping
Reservations for Martha's Vineyard Family Campground open in late January for the following summer and must be made directly with the campground. Peak weeks disappear within days, so set a calendar reminder and have backup dates ready.
For Cape Cod options, Sun Outdoors Cape Cod, Peters Pond RV Resort, Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park, and Bay View Campground each take reservations through their own websites or phone lines. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning access before booking, especially at older, tree-shaded parks.
Book the campground first, then the ferry. Guests are responsible for their own vehicle reservations on the ferry, and ferry reservations book up very quickly, especially for peak season and weekend dates. Passenger-only fast ferries from Falmouth and Hyannis are an option when leaving the rig on the mainland.
What to expect at Oak Bluffs campgrounds
Martha's Vineyard Family Campground offers 180 sites in an oak forest, a free bus stop at the gate, and a community campfire. Sites are wooded and relatively close together; big-rig maneuvering can be tight, and cell service is generally good but variable under tree cover.
Mainland Cape Cod parks tend to have wider pull-throughs, full hookups, pools, and camp stores. Coastal humidity, mosquitoes, and ticks are all part of the experience from June through September, so pack repellent and do daily tick checks with kids.
Ferry logistics shape the trip. Build in buffer time for boarding, plan groceries before crossing since island prices run higher, and note that many island roads are narrow with low tree canopies unsuited to tall RVs.
