Camping near Salisbury, Massachusetts
Salisbury sits at the northeast corner of Massachusetts where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic, directly across the state line from Hampton, New Hampshire. The town is best known for Salisbury Beach and the surrounding barrier-beach system, and it functions as a compact hub for RV travelers exploring the North Shore, the New Hampshire seacoast, and nearby Newburyport.
The area's anchor campground is Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a large state-run coastal park with hundreds of RV-ready sites a short walk from the ocean. Private options fill in around it: Beach Rose RV Park is a small gated park under a mile from the water, while Rusnik Campground and Black Bear Campground sit a few miles inland along Route 1 with wooded sites and pools. Hampton Beach State Park RV Camp, just over the New Hampshire line, is another oceanfront alternative when Salisbury Beach is full.
Most campgrounds here are seasonal, cluster along the Route 1 and Beach Road corridors, and put RVers within a short drive of beaches, marshes, and Newburyport's historic downtown.
Things to do around Salisbury
The main draw is the shoreline. Salisbury Beach State Reservation extends 3.8 miles along the Atlantic from the Merrimack River to the New Hampshire border, with a continuous stretch of sandy beach. Families can swim, surf-fish, walk the boardwalks over the dunes, or use the playground and picnic pavilion inside the reservation.
Two boat ramps on the Merrimack River sit at the campground's southern edge, giving paddlers and small-boat owners direct access to the river and estuary. Wildlife watching is a quiet highlight: harbor seals often haul out on Badgers Rock in the Merrimack River at low tide, and shorebirds are frequent on the salt marsh.
Off the sand, Salisbury Beach itself has a classic arcade-and-pier strip with go-karts, ice cream, and small rides, and nearby Newburyport offers restaurants, shops, and Plum Island's Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for birding.

Salisbury is a warm-weather destination. The regular camping season at Salisbury Beach State Reservation runs from early May to mid-October, with a limited off-season window from mid-October to late November on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights only. Private parks such as Beach Rose typically operate from spring into fall.
Summer is peak, with the warmest ocean temperatures, longest days, and the busiest beach scene. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the state charges a vehicle entrance fee at the reservation, and campground demand is highest around July and August weekends. Late spring and September are quieter and still comfortable, with cooler nights and fewer crowds.
Late-season RV travelers should plan around service shutoffs. Water service at Salisbury Beach shuts off for the season in mid to late October, and after that date no water hookups or dump stations are available, though a bathhouse remains open. Winter camping is not offered in the immediate Salisbury area.

How to book
Salisbury Beach State Reservation is reserved through the Massachusetts DCR system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to the arrival date, and popular summer weekends fill quickly once the window opens. Walk-in registrations are not permitted, and same-day reservations can be made online up until 2 p.m. on the date of arrival.
Private parks book directly. Beach Rose RV Park, Rusnik Campground, and Black Bear Campground all handle reservations through their own websites and by phone, and Rusnik focuses on seasonal and monthly stays alongside shorter visits. Hampton Beach State Park RV Camp, across the line in New Hampshire, books through the New Hampshire State Parks system.
Massachusetts prohibits transporting firewood into or out of DCR campgrounds; firewood must be purchased on site. Bring a current rabies certificate if traveling with a dog.
What to expect on site
Salisbury Beach State Reservation is a large, open oceanfront campground. It offers 484 campsites and one group site with water and 20/30/50-amp electric hookups, plus an additional group site with no hookups, comfort stations with flush toilets and showers, and a dump station. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill, but there is no shade over the sites. Expect close neighbors and a lively, family-heavy atmosphere in summer.
Private parks trade the beachfront setting for more amenities. Beach Rose RV Park is RV-only with full hookups, a pool, and laundry on a compact footprint. Rusnik and Black Bear offer wooded sites, pools, and recreation areas suited to families.
Quiet hours at the state reservation run 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and check-out is 11:00 a.m.

Massachusetts does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles, even for larger Class A motorhomes you might drive down Route 1A toward Salisbury Beach. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform when you book, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are surprised at how quick the verification is, you can often be approved and book your Salisbury RV trip the same day.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Salisbury RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rentals in Salisbury are plentiful on RVezy. Just filter your search by Pet-Friendly to see hosts who welcome dogs. Note that dogs are not allowed on the sand of Salisbury Beach between April 1 and September 30, but the Salisbury Point Ghost Trail and nearby Maudslay State Park in Newburyport offer wonderful leashed walks year-round. Pro tip: message the host to confirm any pet fee before booking so check-in is smooth.
mass.gov/locations/salisbury-beach-state-reservationCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Salisbury?
Yes, RV delivery Salisbury is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Salisbury Beach State Reservation, Beach Rose RV Park, or The Pines Camping Area, level it, connect water and 30/50 amp electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You never have to drive the RV yourself, which is a huge relief if you're nervous about backing into a campsite on the lettered streets at Salisbury Beach. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts deliver to your chosen campground. Pro tip: book delivery early for July and August weekends, it fills up fast.
mass.gov/locations/salisbury-beach-state-reservationHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Salisbury?

reserveamerica.com/explore/salisbury-beach-state-reservation/MA/440407/overviewWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Salisbury?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Salisbury is late May through mid-October, when the Salisbury Beach State Reservation campground is in full season and ocean temperatures climb into the 60s and low 70s. July and August are warmest (typical highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s F) and busiest, while June and September deliver pleasant 70s, fewer crowds, and easier campsite availability. Shoulder-season camping runs into late fall when you can spot snowy owls on the salt marsh, a true New England insider experience. Winter is too cold for most RV setups here, so plan for the green months. Pro tip: aim for the second week of September for warm water, lower rates, and fewer greenheads.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Is Salisbury a good place to start?
Salisbury is one of the friendliest places in New England for first time renting an RV. The campground roads at Salisbury Beach State Reservation are flat and laid out like lettered streets, making navigation easy, and many hosts offer delivery so you don't have to drive the rig at all. Every RVezy booking includes a host walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, holding tanks, generator, and slide-outs, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for anything that comes up. You can also message your host before booking with any question. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they handle like a big van and park easily at spots like Newburyport's downtown waterfront.
mass.gov/locations/salisbury-beach-state-reservationWhat if something breaks down during my Salisbury RV trip?
Relax, you're covered. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Interstate 95, a dead battery at the Salisbury Beach campground, or a propane issue at The Pines is handled with one phone call. RVezy's support team is also reachable around the clock to coordinate with your host. Salisbury's location is a bonus here, there are auto and RV service shops in Seabrook, NH (just 4 miles north) and Newburyport (5 miles south), so help is rarely far away. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's phone in your contacts before you leave home, and you'll have backup at your fingertips.
mass.gov/orgs/massachusetts-state-policeWhat are good RV road trips from Salisbury, MA?
An RV road trip from Salisbury opens up the best of New England. Drive about 55 miles north up I-95 to Portland, Maine for lighthouses and lobster shacks. Push another 3 hours up the coast to Acadia National Park (about 220 miles) for the most iconic park camping in the Northeast. Head 90 miles northwest into New Hampshire's White Mountains for Franconia Notch and the Kancamagus Highway. Or stay local with a 40-mile drive south to Boston's North Shore beaches and Cape Ann. Cross-border note: U.S. to Canada travel may be allowed, just confirm with your host first, but trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: build in a stop in Portsmouth, NH, only about 10 miles from Salisbury and a perfect lunch break.
nps.gov/acad/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Salisbury?
Plan smart and fuel won't surprise you. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes run 7 to 10 MPG; travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Massachusetts gas prices generally run a few cents above the U.S. average, and you'll find some of the cheapest fuel just over the New Hampshire border in Seabrook (no state sales tax on gas-station purchases like snacks). For a 4-night RV camping Salisbury trip with day drives to Newburyport and Portsmouth, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Seabrook, NH before heading north, it's a classic New England RV move.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Salisbury?
For Salisbury Beach State Reservation, book as early as possible: the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) opens reservations through ReserveAmerica up to 4 months ahead, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. ET from April 1 through Labor Day. Summer weekends and the Fourth of July sell out within minutes of opening. Beach Rose RV Park and The Pines Camping Area also book months in advance for July and August, so aim for 60 to 90 days out for peak season. Shoulder months (May, September, October) often have availability just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: check cancellations daily, last-minute oceanfront spots open up regularly between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
mass.gov/locations/salisbury-beach-state-reservationWhat are driving conditions like around Salisbury?
Salisbury is one of the easier coastal towns in Massachusetts to drive an RV through. Interstate 95 runs right past town (Exit 60), Route 1 is wide and flat through Salisbury and Seabrook, and the campground roads are straightforward. The main things to watch: summer beach traffic on Beach Road (Route 1A) on Saturday mornings, the drawbridge over the Merrimack River into Newburyport (clearance is fine but worth a slow approach), and the occasional nor'easter from October through April that can bring high winds across the barrier beach. If heading into Boston, skip rush hour, the I-95/Route 128 interchange is a notorious bottleneck. Pro tip: take the scenic Route 1A south through Newbury and Rowley for a stress-free RV drive past salt marshes and farm stands.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat hookups and amenities do Salisbury campgrounds have?
You'll have everything you need. Salisbury Beach State Reservation offers 484 sites with water and 20/30/50 amp electric, three comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station, picnic tables, fire rings, and pedestal grills (note: no sewer hookups at the sites, but the dump station is on-site). Beach Rose RV Park has full hookups, including sewer, plus Wi-Fi, a heated pool, laundry, and propane service. The Pines Camping Area provides a mix of full- and partial-hookup sites for rigs up to 45 feet. Massachusetts state campgrounds prohibit alcohol, something to know before you pack. Pro tip: water service at Salisbury Beach turns off in mid-October, so for late-season trips, top off your fresh tank before arrival.
mass.gov/locations/salisbury-beach-state-reservationWhat's included inside a typical Salisbury RV rental?
Most Salisbury motorhome rental and travel trailer listings on RVezy come fully equipped for a turnkey beach trip. Expect a queen or king bed plus bunk or convertible sleeping for the family, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger as required by Massachusetts law. Many listings include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot or signal booster, outdoor camp chairs, a propane grill, and a generator for off-grid use. Linens and kitchen kits are commonly offered as add-ons or included, just check the listing details. Pro tip: message the host to confirm beach chairs and a sun shade are included, your future self lounging on Salisbury Beach will thank you.
mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-law-about-motor-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Salisbury?
Hosts on RVezy customize your Salisbury rental with helpful add-ons: delivery and setup, generator hours, bike racks, kayak or paddleboard rentals, linen and kitchen kits, propane refills, and pet fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Salisbury, Amesbury, Newburyport, or Seabrook, NH, and many hosts will meet you at Salisbury Beach State Reservation instead. Mileage policies and per-night minimums are listed clearly on every listing, and you can message the host directly with any question before booking. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen kit turns your campervan rental Salisbury into a true grab-your-bag-and-go vacation, especially nice if you're flying into Boston Logan and Uber-ing the 40 miles up.
massport.com/logan-airportHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Salisbury, MA on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown clearly before you confirm), and it is released back to you after the trip assuming no damage or extra fees like mileage or generator overages. To avoid deposit issues, do a careful walkthrough with photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within the mileage allowance. Pro tip: ask the host about the nearest dump station and gas station before drop-off, returning a Salisbury rental clean and topped off is the surest way to a full deposit refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Salisbury a good base for a family RV trip in Massachusetts?
Salisbury is one of the best family RV trip Massachusetts destinations on the East Coast. The Salisbury Beach boardwalk is a classic old-school amusement strip with an arcade, mini golf, go-karts, fried dough, and Joe's Playland; the 3.8-mile beach is lifeguarded in summer; and you can walk from your campsite to the sand in under five minutes. Day trips are easy: Plum Island and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge (15 minutes south), historic downtown Newburyport (10 minutes), Portsmouth, NH (20 minutes), and Boston (1 hour). Local insider tip: catch a free Thursday-night summer concert at Salisbury Beach Broadway Stage, bring camp chairs from the RV and enjoy the ocean breeze. It's the kind of trip kids remember forever.
