RV camping near Swampscott, Massachusetts
Swampscott sits on the North Shore of Massachusetts Bay, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Boston. The town itself is a coastal suburb without RV parks inside its borders, so renters typically base a trip around campgrounds in the surrounding region and use Swampscott as a day-trip anchor for beaches, seafood, and commuter-rail access into Boston.
The closest overnight options split into two very different experiences. To the south, the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park offers rustic island camping, currently active on Peddocks Island, with sites reached only by ferry or private boat. Bumpkin Island, Grape Island, and Thompson Island appear on regional lists but do not currently accept general public camping reservations. These are tent-and-yurt experiences, not drive-in RV pads. To the north and west, Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park in Andover provides the nearest traditional wooded campground reachable by road.
Renters bringing a motorhome or trailer usually park at Harold Parker or a private RV park farther out, then drive into Swampscott for the day.
Things to do around Swampscott
Swampscott's shoreline is the main draw. Fisherman's Beach, King's Beach, and Preston Beach line the town, and the walkable harbor area offers lobster shacks, tide pools, and views across to Nahant. The Marblehead peninsula next door adds a historic downtown, a lighthouse, and sailing charters.
Day trips fan out easily. Salem, roughly six miles north, covers witch-trial history, the Peabody Essex Museum, and a working waterfront. Boston is reachable by MBTA commuter rail from Swampscott or Lynn station.
For an on-water excursion, campers can catch a ferry from Hingham Shipyard to Peddocks Island, hike the Fort Andrews ruins, and return the same day. Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park offers freshwater swimming, paddling, and miles of forested hiking and mountain-bike trails.

The practical camping window on the North Shore runs from late spring through mid-fall. Beaches, ferries, and island campgrounds cluster their operations into this stretch, and shoulder weeks in June and September tend to be the most comfortable for RV travel.
Boston Harbor Islands camping on Peddocks Island is strictly seasonal, running from mid-June through mid-October. Sites are available Wednesday through Saturday nights during the summer season, then Thursday through Saturday nights after Labor Day through the closing weekend in October. Winter access to the islands is limited, and services are shut down.
Summer is peak season across the region. July and August bring warm, humid weather, crowded beaches, and full campgrounds, so booking well ahead is essential. Fall delivers cooler nights, foliage in the inland state forests, and easier reservations. Winter camping is not practical for most RV renters in this area, as state-forest campgrounds and island sites close for the season.

How to book campgrounds near Swampscott
Massachusetts state-park campgrounds, including Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Sites can be booked up to four months in advance of the arrival date, and popular summer weekends fill quickly after the booking window opens each morning.
Boston Harbor Islands sites on Peddocks Island are also booked through ReserveAmerica, with reservations available up to four months in advance of check-in. Walk-in registrations are not permitted, though same-day advance reservations can be made online until 2 pm on the arrival date.
Ferry tickets from Hingham Shipyard to Peddocks Island are a separate booking and should be purchased immediately after securing a campsite, since ferry capacity is limited.
What to expect on the ground
RV renters should plan around the fact that Boston Harbor Islands camping is rustic and walk-in only from the ferry dock. Sites have composting toilets, no showers, and no supplies, and campers must carry all gear from the dock to their site. Peddocks Island has running water at the Visitor Center and resident staff on the island during the season. This is a tent or yurt experience, not an RV hookup site.
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the practical choice for a rig. It offers 89 wooded sites with a water spigot at each site, flush toilets and showers in the comfort stations, a dump station, and eleven sites with 20/30/50 amp electric hookups.
Expect New England summer conditions: mosquitoes and ticks in wooded areas, sea breeze and fog along the coast, and heavy weekend traffic on Route 128 and Route 1.
