Campgrounds and RV parks near Vineyard Haven, MA

The Vineyard's draw is its beaches, harbor towns, and bike paths. From a Vineyard Haven base, families can reach Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and the up-island villages of West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah by island bus, bike, or car. The VTA bus stops directly at the island's campground gate, which lets RV renters leave the rig parked and explore without moving it. Typical activities include swimming at State Beach, biking the paved path between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, ferry-hopping to Chappaquiddick, and visiting the Aquinnah Cliffs. Fishing, kayaking, and beachcombing are common along the north-shore ponds. Cape Cod-based campers add whale watching from Hyannis, the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and National Seashore beaches to the itinerary.

The island campground operates seasonally from mid-May through early October. Outside that window, on-island camping is not available, and RV renters must stay on Cape Cod or the mainland. Summer, from late June through Labor Day, is peak season: sites sell out within days to weeks of the January release, ferry vehicle slots for popular sailings sell out within hours of opening, and quiet hours are strictly enforced. Late spring and early fall are the quieter shoulder windows. May, June, September, and early October bring milder weather, thinner crowds, and easier ferry availability, though ocean water stays cold in May and warms into September, when sea temperatures peak in the low seventies. Wildflowers and beach-plum blooms are typical in late spring; fall brings clearer skies and better fishing. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest tropical-storm risk in August and September. Nor'easters and coastal storms can disrupt ferry service in any month, so building a buffer day into travel plans is wise.

Expect a wooded, family-oriented setting rather than an oceanfront RV resort. Martha's Vineyard Family Campground sits under scrub oak and pine, with sites screened by trees, a camp store, hot showers, a coin laundry, a recreation room, and a playground. Most tent and standard sites have water and 20/30 amp electric, while dedicated RV sites offer water, sewer, and 50/30 amp full hookups; RVs up to about 40 feet can be accommodated, and cabin rentals are also on-site. Have ferry vehicle dimensions ready when booking, including total length with any tow. Ferry crossings from Woods Hole take about 45 minutes, and arrival at the terminal is required well before departure. Once on-island, the VTA bus, bike rentals, and taxi service make it practical to leave the RV at the site. Grocery stores are in Vineyard Haven and Edgartown.
