Campgrounds and RV parks near Atlanta, MI

Elk viewing is the signature activity. The Michigan DNR manages designated viewing areas within the Pigeon River Country State Forest, and dawn or dusk in September and October, during the rut, offers the best odds of hearing bulls bugle. Late April through mid-May is a second strong window, when elk feed on new spring growth. On the water, Clear Lake supports swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, and bass fishing, with paddlesport rentals available in season. Nearby lakes and the Au Sable River add more paddling and angling options. Off-highway vehicle use is a defining local activity. Clear Lake State Park is one of the few Michigan state parks that allows ORVs to travel between the campground and nearby trails, with direct access to the Atlanta ORV route and the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail. Hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, and cross-country skiing round out the year.

The core RV season runs from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, though Clear Lake State Park is one of the few state parks that stays open for winter camping. Most state forest campgrounds open in mid to late April and close by late October, with exact dates varying by park and by yearly maintenance projects. Summer weekends, especially the Fourth of July and Labor Day, are the busiest windows and fill first. Fall is the marquee season locally. The elk rut in September and early October brings a spike in visitation, and hunters using surrounding state forest lands push demand higher through November. Foliage typically peaks from late September into the first two weeks of October. Overnight lows can drop near freezing by mid-October, so furnace-equipped rigs have an advantage. Winter shifts the area to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Spring reopening brings mud, bugs by late May, and the second elk-viewing window in April and early May. Always confirm current closure notices before booking, since Michigan state parks periodically shut loops for restroom, electrical, or water-system upgrades.

Clear Lake State Park's modern campground is split into upper and lower loops with several pull-through sites, shaded by oaks and pines and within view of the lake. Facilities include modern restrooms with showers, a sanitation station, electric hookups at sites, a swim beach, a boat launch, a nine-hole disc golf course, and mini cabin and tiny house lodging. Individual sites do not have water hookups, but spigots are available throughout the campground. State forest campgrounds nearby are rustic. Expect vault toilets, hand-pumped or no potable water, no hookups, and shorter or narrower access roads. Big rigs should measure carefully and scout ahead where possible. Cell service is spotty across Pigeon River Country and much of the surrounding forest, so printed maps are useful. Black bears, elk, and deer are present; store food securely and keep a clean site.
