Camping near Bessemer, Michigan
Bessemer sits in Gogebic County in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula, surrounded by the Ottawa National Forest, the Black River corridor, and the Lake Superior shoreline about 20 minutes north. The area is a base for waterfall touring, Lake Superior beach access, and inland-lake fishing, with a mix of county parks, national-forest campgrounds, and township sites within easy driving distance for RV travelers.
Curry Park is the closest municipal option and sits within Ironwood, a short drive west of Bessemer, making it convenient for travelers who want groceries and services nearby. For lakeside camping, Little Girl's Point County Park is a Gogebic County park on a bluff over Lake Superior, popular for its agate beach and sunset views.
Inland-lake options include Weber Lake County Park and Lake of The Falls County Park, both quiet, small-site campgrounds oriented toward paddling and fishing. Schomberg County Park adds another rustic choice for travelers looking to stay outside the busier lake-frontage parks.
Things to do around Bessemer
The Black River National Forest Scenic Byway runs north from Bessemer to Lake Superior and passes a series of named waterfalls, including Sandstone, Gorge, Potawatomi, and Rainbow Falls, each reached by short but sometimes stair-heavy trails from marked lots. The North Country National Scenic Trail crosses the corridor and offers day-hike segments suitable for families.
Lake Superior access at Little Girl's Point County Park is a draw for beach walking, agate and rock hunting, and swimming on calm days. Copper Peak and the Big Powderhorn ski area sit nearby for chairlift rides and mountain biking in the warm months.
Inland, Weber Lake County Park and Lake of The Falls County Park provide small-boat launches, paddling water, and stream fishing. Curry Park in Ironwood works as an easy in-town stop for walking, playgrounds, and events.

The camping season in this corner of the Upper Peninsula is short. Gogebic County parks generally open in mid-May and close in early to mid-October, and most Ottawa National Forest campgrounds follow a similar Memorial Day through fall pattern. Little Girl's Point County Park is typically open from mid-May through early October, with a seasonal park office phone line active only during those months.
June through August is peak season, with the warmest lake water in late July and August and the highest demand for Lake Superior sites. Bugs, especially blackflies and mosquitoes, are heaviest from late May through late June, so travelers often prefer July onward.
September delivers cooler nights, fewer insects, and fall color that usually peaks from late September into early October. After mid-October, most campgrounds shut down, snow arrives quickly, and winter recreation in the area shifts to skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing rather than RV camping.
Booking a site near Bessemer
Gogebic County parks, including Little Girl's Point County Park, Lake of The Falls County Park, Weber Lake County Park, and Schomberg County Park, are managed by the Gogebic County Forestry and Parks Commission. Nightly and monthly reservations open at 8:30 a.m. Central Time on the second Monday in January each year and must be made through the county's online reservation system linked from each park page.
Only one reservation per site occupant and date range is permitted, and reservations must reflect the actual occupant. Refunds are not issued for early departure or acts of nature. Gogebic County residents can enter the promo code RESIDENT at checkout for a monthly discount, with residency verified at check-in.
Ottawa National Forest campgrounds in the Bessemer Ranger District are booked separately through Recreation.gov, and city or township parks such as Curry Park should be contacted directly.
What to expect on the ground
Most campgrounds around Bessemer are rustic by design. Little Girl's Point County Park has 29 electric sites with 30 and 50 amp service and 2 non-electric sites, a flush-toilet building without showers, and an on-site water tanker for filling containers. There is no direct water at sites and no dump station in the park, so travelers should arrive with full fresh tanks and plan a dump elsewhere.
Cell service and Wi-Fi are unreliable at the Lake Superior sites and thin at inland county parks, so downloads and offline maps are useful. Bring bug protection in early summer, layers year-round, and firewood purchased locally to avoid moving pests.
Roads to shoreline and forest parks are paved for the main runs but transition to gravel or narrow county road near the campgrounds. Larger rigs fit, but slow approaches are advised.
