Campgrounds near Gaylord, Michigan
Gaylord sits on the high plateau of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, right off I-75, and serves as a base for inland lakes, trout streams, and one of the largest tracts of undeveloped land in the state. RV renters have a mix of options within about 20 minutes of downtown: private resort-style parks with hookups, a lakeside state park, and rustic state forest sites better suited to smaller rigs.
Gaylord KOA Holiday and Gaylord South/Bradford Lake KOA cover the full-hookup end of the market, with pull-throughs and family amenities. Otsego Lake State Park occupies 62 acres of lakeside recreation near Gaylord, easily reached from I-75, with a half-mile sandy beach and a boat launch used by motorized and nonmotorized watercraft.
For a more remote stay, Sturgeon Valley Campground and Chandler Hill Campground put RVers close to the Pigeon River Country State Forest, home to one of the largest free-roaming elk herds east of the Mississippi and, at 12 miles wide and 20 miles long, the largest block of contiguous undeveloped land in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
Things to do near Gaylord
Water dominates the summer schedule. Otsego Lake is generally shallow, with a maximum depth of 23 feet, and fishing is considered good year-round for bluegill, perch, crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, and northern pike. The state park beach, fishing pier, and boat launch give campers direct access, and paddlesport rentals are available on site.
North and east of town, Pigeon River Country State Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, and backcountry driving on old two-tracks. The Shingle Mill Pathway is a trail system of five loops, including 6, 10, and 11-mile options along the Pigeon River. Elk viewing peaks during the September to early October rut, when bulls bugle and spar. Four designated elk viewing stations are spread across the forest.

Gaylord's camping season is short and busy. Most private and public campgrounds open in spring and close by late October. The campground at Otsego Lake State Park is open seasonally each year from April to November, and July and August are peak, with holiday weekends at lake-adjacent parks filling months ahead.
Late spring can be wet and buggy, with black flies and mosquitoes active in the forest through June. September brings cooler nights, fewer insects, fall color, and the elk rut in Pigeon River Country, making it a strong shoulder-season window for RV renters who want quieter sites.
Winter shuts down nearly all campgrounds. Gaylord sits in a heavy snow belt with roughly 164 days below freezing on average, so off-season RV travel is limited to a handful of year-round private parks. Modern restrooms at Otsego Lake State Park are open seasonally, roughly Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with campground amenities available across the broader spring-to-fall window.

How to book near Gaylord
State park sites in Michigan are handled through the state's central reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com, or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Sites are released on a rolling six-month window from the arrival date, so summer weekends at Otsego Lake State Park should be booked as soon as the window opens.
Gaylord KOA Holiday and Gaylord South/Bradford Lake KOA book through the KOA website or app. Rustic state forest campgrounds such as Sturgeon Valley Campground and Chandler Hill Campground can also be reserved through the DNR system, and reservations must generally be made at least 72 hours in advance. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required on the vehicle for entry to state parks and state forest campgrounds.
What to expect on the ground
The private KOA parks around Gaylord are the easiest fit for larger rigs and first-time RV renters: level sites, full hookups, Wi-Fi, and pull-throughs. Expect a resort feel rather than a wilderness one.
Otsego Lake State Park sites are generous in size, shaded by oaks, maples, and pines, and within view of the lake, close to the swimming beach, boat ramp, fishing pier, and picnic area. Each site has 20/30-amp electrical service. There are no full hookups, so plan to use the sanitation station on the way out.
Sturgeon Valley Campground and Chandler Hill Campground sit in state forest country. Pigeon River Country is managed to retain a wild character, so infrastructure and signage are minimal. Expect rustic sites, vault toilets, hand-pump water, no hookups, and narrow access roads better suited to smaller rigs and Class B or C vans.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Gaylord, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Gaylord, MI?
RV rental in Gaylord is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to booking hotels for a family of four in peak summer. On RVezy, motorhome rental Gaylord listings average around $200 per night, while travel trailers and pop-ups typically run $90 to $150 per night. Many Gaylord hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly bookings, which is the smart-money play for an Otsego County road trip. For a cheap RV rental Gaylord option, filter by travel trailers and check shoulder-season dates in May or September. Pro tip: book mid-week pickups when possible, since Friday pickups during the Alpenfest celebration in July can push prices up quickly.
gaylordmichigan.net/stay-here/campgrounds/What kind of license do I need to rent an RV in Gaylord?
Good news: a regular Michigan driver's license (or any valid U.S. or international driver's license) is all you need to rent an RV in Gaylord for nearly every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement is required for vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most travel trailers on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking process. Visiting from out of state or Canada? Your home license works just fine. Most first-timers are surprised how simple the paperwork is, which leaves more time to plan your route to Otsego Lake.
michigan.gov/sos/license-id/license-and-idIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Gaylord RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Gaylord booked through RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are covered from the moment you pull onto I-75. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, so you can pick what feels right for your trip. If a tire blows on M-32 or the battery dies at Otsego Lake State Park, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help on the way. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind, especially if it is your first time renting an RV in Gaylord.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Gaylord RV rental?
You can book with confidence: RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy across all bookings (not set by the host), and it includes a grace period that allows a full refund shortly after booking if your plans change. After that grace window, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is and the specific tier of the policy. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your Gaylord RV trip stays on track. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred RV for peak Gaylord summer weekends, knowing you have built-in flexibility if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Gaylord RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Gaylord options are plentiful on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you will see motorhomes and trailers whose hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Gaylord is a great dog destination too: the Aspen Park trails right in town are leash-friendly, the Pigeon River Country State Forest has miles of two-track perfect for hiking with your dog, and most state forest campgrounds around Otsego County allow leashed pets at no extra cost. The Gaylord KOA Holiday even has a dedicated KampK9 off-leash area. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or cleaning expectations.
koa.com/campgrounds/gaylord/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Gaylord?
Yes, RV delivery Gaylord is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you are new to RVing or just do not want to drive a big rig through downtown. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at Otsego Lake State Park, Gaylord KOA Holiday, or a private cabin driveway nearby. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery when you search, then message the host to confirm distance and any delivery fee. It is the easiest way to turn a Gaylord RV trip into a true vacation from minute one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gaylord,MichiganHow far can I travel from Gaylord on an RV road trip?
You have incredible range from Gaylord, which sits right on I-75 at the 45th parallel. A typical RV road trip from Gaylord can easily reach Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge in about 55 miles north, Traverse City and the Sleeping Bear Dunes in about 60 miles west, Petoskey and Little Traverse Bay in roughly 50 miles northwest, or Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula in about 145 miles. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for big loops. Filter by mileage allowance and message hosts directly about your planned route. Pro tip: the M-22 loop around Leelanau Peninsula is a classic Gaylord launch point.
michigan.org/scenic-drivesWhat are the best campgrounds near Gaylord for RV camping?
The best campgrounds near Gaylord cover everything from full-hookup resorts to quiet state forest sites. Otsego Lake State Park sits about 7 miles south of town with 155 electric sites on a sandy beach, perfect for swimming and kayaking. Gaylord KOA Holiday off Old 27 offers full hookups, a pool, mini-golf, and the KampK9 dog park. Otsego Lake County Park has 80 affordable electric sites with showers and a dump station. For a rustic RV camping Gaylord experience, Pigeon River Country State Forest campgrounds like Pigeon Bridge offer first-come, first-served sites near the elk viewing area. Pro tip: state park sites at Otsego Lake fill up six months out for summer weekends, so reserve early at MiDNRReservations.com.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Gaylord, Michigan?
The sweet spot for an RV rental Michigan trip to Gaylord is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s and nights cool to the 50s, perfect for a campfire under the stars at the 45th parallel. July is the warmest month, averaging around 76°F, and it's when Alpenfest takes over downtown. Late September into early October delivers spectacular fall color through the hardwood ridges, fewer bugs, and lower rates. Snowbirds and skiers, take note: some Gaylord hosts offer winterized RVs from December through March for Treetops Resort getaways. Pro tip: book early-September dates for the best mix of warm days, cold nights, and open campsites.
weather.gov/apx/Can I rent an RV in Gaylord in the winter?
Yes, and a winter RV trip in Gaylord is a genuinely magical northern Michigan experience. Gaylord averages around 140 inches of snow per year and is home to Treetops Resort and Otsego Resort, so winter rentals here are great basecamps for downhill skiing, snowmobiling on the 60+ miles of groomed local trails, or ice fishing on Otsego Lake. Look for listings labeled four-season or winterized, which means heated holding tanks, skirting, and reliable furnaces. Most winter renters use shore-power campgrounds or driveway setups rather than dry camping. Pro tip: message the host about whether the RV includes a heated water hose, since January lows in Gaylord regularly dip into the single digits.
weather.gov/apx/I've never driven an RV before. Is Gaylord a good place to start?
Gaylord is one of the friendlier places in Michigan for first time renting an RV. The roads around Otsego County are wide, traffic is light outside of festival weekends, and I-75 runs straight through town with easy on/off ramps and big-rig-friendly fuel stops. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, slides, dumping, and driving tips, so you're not figuring it out alone. If you're still nervous, choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Gaylord listing, which drive much like a large van. Pro tip: practice in the Meijer parking lot off M-32 before heading to your first campsite, then enjoy the quiet two-lane drive to Pigeon River.
michigan.gov/sos/license-id/license-and-idWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Gaylord trip?
You're never stranded on a Gaylord RV trip. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so whether you've got a flat tire on I-75 near Vanderbilt, a dead battery at Otsego Lake State Park, or a propane issue in the Pigeon River Country, one phone call gets a professional dispatched. Your host is also reachable by message for any quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's plate and VIN, so you can report your exact location quickly.
michigan.gov/msp/Can I drive my Gaylord rental RV across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel from Gaylord into Ontario through the Sault Ste. Marie crossing (about 170 miles north) may be allowed, but it depends entirely on the host and the protection plan, since insurance coverage differs in Canada. Always confirm in writing with your host before booking, and let RVezy know your route. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, as the insurance does not extend there. For most renters, the best move is to stay within the U.S. and explore the Upper Peninsula, where you can reach Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, and the Mackinac Bridge all within a day's drive from Gaylord. Pro tip: bring a passport just in case you decide to add a Soo Locks day trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Gaylord RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables in any Michigan RV budget, so it pays to plan. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan can hit 18 to 20, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer usually lands around 10 to 12 mpg. Michigan gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and Gaylord has plenty of large fuel stops along I-75 (Exit 282 has big-rig-friendly pumps). For a typical 300-mile loop from Gaylord to Mackinaw City and back through Petoskey, budget roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Gaylord rather than tourist towns like Mackinaw City, where prices tend to spike.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gaylord?
For summer weekends in Gaylord, book campgrounds as early as you can. Michigan state parks like Otsego Lake open reservations six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and prime lakefront sites for July and August often sell out the day the window opens. Private parks like Gaylord KOA Holiday and Indian River RV Resort also fill fast for the Fourth of July, Alpenfest in mid-July, and Labor Day weekend. State forest campgrounds in Pigeon River Country are mostly first-come, first-served, which is a great backup for last-minute trips. Pro tip: reserve your RV on RVezy first, then book the campground, so you know the exact length and hookup needs before requesting a site.
midnrreservations.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Gaylord?
Driving an RV in and around Gaylord is genuinely pleasant. The town sits at about 1,350 feet of elevation on a gentle plateau, so there are no big mountain grades, and major routes like I-75, M-32, and Old US-27 are wide, well-maintained, and easy to navigate even in a 30-foot Class C. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Otsego County has one of the highest deer populations in the state) and be prepared for sudden lake-effect snow squalls from November through March. Summer thunderstorms can roll in quickly off Lake Michigan, so check the National Weather Service Gaylord office forecast before long drives. Pro tip: avoid narrow forest two-tracks in Pigeon River unless your host specifically approves them.
weather.gov/apx/What amenities do campgrounds near Gaylord typically offer?
You'll find a great range of amenities at campgrounds near Gaylord. Modern state park sites at Otsego Lake offer 20/30/50-amp electric, potable water spigots, hot showers, flush restrooms, and a centralized dump station. Private parks like Gaylord KOA Holiday and Indian River RV Resort add full hookups (water, sewer, electric at the site), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. State forest campgrounds in Pigeon River Country are more rustic with vault toilets and hand pumps, so you'll rely on your RV's freshwater tank and generator. The closest public dump station and freshwater fill is at Otsego Lake State Park. Pro tip: bring a surge protector, since voltage can dip at busy campgrounds on hot July weekends.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping-and-lodgingWhat features and amenities come with a typical Gaylord RV rental?
Most RVs in the Gaylord area come fully equipped for a true vacation, not a camping ordeal. Expect comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and a dinette or sofa that converts to extra sleeping. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and camping chairs. Some hosts offer a Wi-Fi hotspot or generator as an add-on, which is handy in the cell-spotty Pigeon River backcountry. Every motorhome on RVezy has seatbelts for travel, and every host provides a walkthrough so you know exactly how everything works before you roll.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping-and-lodgingWhat add-ons and options can I get with a Gaylord RV rental?
Hosts in Gaylord offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make life easier. Popular extras include delivery and setup (often $2 to $5 per mile from the host's home base), kitchen and linen kits (usually $50 to $150 flat), portable generators for boondocking in the Pigeon River Country, bike racks for the North Central State Trail, and outdoor gear like fire pits and camp chairs. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home in or near Gaylord, but delivery to Otsego Lake State Park or Gaylord KOA is common. Mileage policies vary by listing (some offer unlimited, others 100 to 150 free miles per day). Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen kit for the smoothest first-time renter experience.
gaylordmichigan.net/stay-here/campgrounds/How does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Gaylord?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform when you book, so there is never cash changing hands with the host in a Gaylord parking lot. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few days of dropoff. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and fuel and tank levels at pickup and dropoff, and return the RV at the agreed time. Pro tip: use a credit card with travel protection for an extra layer of confidence on your Otsego County adventure.
