Campgrounds near Hart, Michigan
Hart sits in Oceana County on Michigan's west coast, roughly five miles inland from Lake Michigan and just north of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the beach, the dunes, and the surrounding orchards and rail-trail. Most campgrounds cluster between Hart and the Silver Lake and Mears area to the southwest.
Options range from full-hookup RV resorts to family-style destination parks. Silver Lake Resort and Campground and Silver Hills Camp Resort offer modern sites close to the ORV entrance, while Val Du Lakes Resort and Hill & Hollow Campground provide larger recreational grounds with lakes, pools, and family programming. Lake Michigan Camp and Retreat lies closer to the big-lake shoreline for beach-focused stays.
Silver Lake State Park also operates a state-run modern campground within the park itself, which fills quickly on summer weekends and requires a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry.
Things to do around Hart
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are the anchor attraction. The state park contains a 450-acre ORV scramble area, the only sand-dune riding east of the Mississippi, along with a pedestrian dune area and a guided tour operated by Mac Wood's Dune Rides from mid-May through October. Visitors without their own machine can rent ORVs, side-by-sides, or street-legal Jeeps from approved local operators such as Silverback Offroad Rental and Silver Lake Buggy Rentals.
Beyond the dunes, families use Silver Lake and Hart Lake for swimming, kayaking, and fishing, and ride the paved Hart-Montague Trail through orchard country. Little Sable Point Lighthouse, Lake Michigan beaches, and the National Asparagus Festival in downtown Hart round out a typical week.

The Silver Lake State Park ORV area is open April 1 through October 31, with extended evening hours from May 1 to September 15. The busy season around Silver Lake and Hart runs from June 1 through September 15, when campgrounds, rental shops, and restaurants operate at full capacity. Weekends and three-day holidays during that window use a free parking voucher system at the ORV welcome center to manage arrivals.
Spring and late fall are quieter and cooler, with lake temperatures too cold for most swimmers but comfortable conditions for hiking and riding. Many private campgrounds close or run on a limited schedule outside the summer window.
Winter shifts the focus to off-season programs: a shoreline horseback riding season runs November 1 through 30, and a fat-tire biking season on the dunes runs December 15 through March 15. Most private RV parks are closed during those months, and lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan is common.

Trevor was a great host, we had a few questions and he was available for us instantly, when we first got set up we realized we had no hot water and our air conditioner froze up and he came out immediately and had both things fixed and running, for us to enjoy our holiday weekend!

How to book Hart campgrounds
Sites at Silver Lake State Park are reserved through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone at 1-800-44-PARKS. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window to the date of arrival, and summer weekends at popular west-Michigan parks often sell out within minutes of release. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to any state park or state forest campground.
Private parks such as Silver Hills Camp Resort, Silver Lake Resort and Campground, Val Du Lakes Resort, Lake Michigan Camp and Retreat, and Hill & Hollow Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone. Seasonal sites at the larger resorts are often committed well in advance, so travelers should target transient RV sites and book as early as possible for June through Labor Day.
What to expect on arrival
Expect sandy, tree-shaded sites and a mix of full-hookup, water-electric, and rustic loops depending on the property. Roads near the dune entrance in Mears carry heavy trailer traffic on summer weekends, and parking near the ORV staging area is capacity-controlled. Campers towing an ORV on weekends and holidays during the busy season should pick up a free parking voucher at the ORV Welcome Center.
Quiet hours, leashed-pet rules, and a two-vehicle-per-site limit are standard at state park loops, and most private parks follow similar policies. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving invasive pests. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Hart, and groceries, fuel, and propane are available in town.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hart, MI?
An RV rental in Hart typically runs about $95 to $200 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $275 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $400 for larger Class A coaches, with rates peaking from mid-June through early September when the Silver Lake Sand Dunes draw their biggest crowds. For a cheap RV rental in Hart, target shoulder weeks in May or late September when nightly rates often drop and dune access is still wide open. Pro tip: book Sunday through Thursday at private parks near the ORV scramble area to stretch your budget and skip the weekend rush.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hart%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hart, Michigan?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hart. The State of Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, including the Class A, Class C, and fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform when you book, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from out of country? Bring your home license (an International Driving Permit is recommended if your license is not in English) and you are set to roll toward the Silver Lake Sand Dunes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Hart protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Hart includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, with options that cover physical damage to the vehicle, giving you financial protection if a tree branch dings the roof at Silver Lake State Park or a rock chips the windshield on US-31. Protection plans are purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and backed by RVezy's support team. Pick your plan, hit confirm, and start planning your dune day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Hart RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy across all listings, including a money-back grace period after you book so you have time to firm up your plans before any cancellation fees apply. The refund amount depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and special circumstances are reviewed by RVezy support. Because RVezy (not individual hosts) manages cancellations, the process is consistent across every listing and is not displayed on the listing page. Pro tip: lock in your favorite Hart dates early during peak dune season, knowing the cancellation terms are clear and consistent.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hart?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rentals in Hart are plentiful on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter while browsing and you'll see motorhomes and trailers where dogs are welcome, often for a small cleaning fee set by the host. Once in town, Silver Lake State Park allows leashed pets in the campground and on most beaches outside the designated swim area, and the 22-mile William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail State Park is a dream paved path for morning walks with your pup. Pack a 6-foot leash (required at all Michigan State Parks) and waste bags, and your four-legged co-pilot is ready for the dunes.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hart?
Yes, RV delivery in Hart is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Silver Lake State Park, Sun Retreats Silver Lake, Dunes Harbor Family Camp, or a private property near downtown Hart, level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on the search page and message the host with your campsite number. You unpack groceries, they handle the rest, and your dune vacation starts the moment you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hart%2C%20MichiganHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Hart?
Most hosts in Hart include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a wider Hart RV trip. From Hart you're about 6 miles to Silver Lake Sand Dunes, 30 miles north to Ludington State Park, 45 miles south to Muskegon and Michigan's Adventure, around 110 miles to Traverse City, and roughly 130 miles to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Check the mileage policy in the listing's pricing section before booking, and if you're plotting a big loop, message the host to ask about a discounted extra-mile package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hart%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Hart, MI for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Hart. Top picks include Silver Lake State Park Campground in Mears (modern electric sites steps from the dunes and Silver Lake), Sun Retreats Silver Lake (full-hookup sites with a pool), Dunes Harbor Family Camp (close to the ORV entrance and family-focused), Silver Lake Resort and Campground (next to Craig's Cruisers), and Charles Mears State Park in nearby Pentwater for a quieter Lake Michigan vibe. Book Michigan state park sites at MiDNRReservations.com up to six months ahead, especially for July and August weekends, which sell out fast.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hart?
Late June through early September is prime time, with average highs in the upper 70s to low 80s F, warm Lake Michigan swims, and the Silver Lake ORV Area in full swing during its April 1 through October 31 season. For a smart-money window, target late May, early June, or mid-September: temperatures hover in the comfortable 65 to 75 F range, campgrounds are easier to book, and the dunes are still open. October brings beautiful fall color along the Hart-Montague Trail with crisp 50s F days. Winter has its own charm with cross-country skiing on local trails and fat-tire biking opportunities in the area.
weather.gov/grr/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Hart?
You've got this, and Hart is one of the friendliest places in Michigan for a first time renting an RV. Roads around Oceana County are flat, lightly trafficked, and well-marked, with US-31 providing easy four-lane access from Muskegon. Every RVezy host gives a thorough orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, slide-outs, propane, the dump valves, and how to back into your site. Many hosts in Hart will even deliver and set up the RV at your campground so you skip the highway driving entirely. Start with a smaller Class C or campervan rental in Hart if you're nervous, and you'll feel like a pro by sunset on the dunes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002197093-For-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue near Hart?
You're never alone on the road. Every motorhome rental in Hart booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, tows, and fuel delivery anywhere from downtown Hart to the back roads near Little Sable Point Lighthouse. One phone call dispatches help to your exact location, and your host plus RVezy's support team are reachable through the app for any quick questions. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the driveway, snap a photo of your rig's VIN, and the rare hiccup becomes a quick fix rather than a trip-ender.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hart RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely, interstate road trips are a popular reason to rent an RV in Hart. An RV road trip from Hart easily reaches Indiana Dunes National Park (about 180 miles southwest), Chicago (around 210 miles), or Wisconsin via the SS Badger car ferry out of Ludington. Crossing into Canada (Ontario via the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, about 230 miles east) is allowed on many rentals, but confirm with your host before booking since insurance coverage must extend across the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Message the host directly from the listing to confirm your route and you're cleared to go.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Hart RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than most first-timers expect. Most Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG), and campervans can reach 18 to 22 MPG. Michigan gas prices generally track close to the national average; you'll find competitive pumps at the stations in downtown Hart and the truck-friendly options near the US-31/Polk Road exit. For a 4-night Hart loop covering the dunes, Ludington, and Pentwater (roughly 200 miles of driving), budget around $80 to $140 in fuel for most motorhomes. Fill up before turning back to keep your final mileage stress-free.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hart?
Book early, this area is no secret. Michigan state park sites at Silver Lake, Charles Mears, and Ludington open for reservations exactly six months ahead through MiDNRReservations.com or 1-800-447-2757, and the most coveted summer weekends (July 4, Electric Forest weekend in late June, and Labor Day) get snapped up within minutes of opening. Private parks like Sun Retreats Silver Lake and Dunes Harbor Family Camp typically book 3 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: if a state park weekend is full, set a cancellation alert; sites free up regularly as plans change, and a midweek arrival often means easier booking and better site selection.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like around Hart and Silver Lake?
Driving in Oceana County is refreshingly easy. US-31 is a flat, divided four-lane corridor connecting Hart to Muskegon and Ludington, and county roads to Silver Lake (Polk Road / B-15 and Hazel Road) are paved, well-signed, and gently rolling through orchards and dune country. There is no urban congestion, no low bridges, and no steep mountain passes to worry about. Watch for blowing sand and crosswinds near the dunes, occasional farm equipment in spring and fall, and a slower limit through downtown Hart on State Street. Winter visitors should plan for lake-effect snow squalls from December through February. Take it easy, enjoy the scenery, and you're set.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at Hart-area campgrounds?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Silver Lake State Park's modern campground offers 30 and 50-amp electric, potable water, modern restrooms with hot showers, and an on-site dump station, while private parks like Sun Retreats Silver Lake and Silver Lake Resort and Campground deliver full hookups (water, sewer, electric), pools, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi. Need a quick dump or fresh water between stops? The Silver Lake State Park sanitation station is open daily during the season. A Michigan Recreation Passport (an annual fee for residents added to vehicle registration, or a daily fee for non-residents) is required for vehicle entry to all Michigan state parks.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat features and amenities come standard in a Hart RV rental?
You're getting a fully equipped home on wheels. Most RVs on RVezy in Hart sleep 4 to 8 people and come standard with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinette, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many listings also include a flat-screen TV, outdoor speakers, a power awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking on the way to the dunes. Wi-Fi typically rides on your phone hotspot since campground Wi-Fi can be spotty. Scan the listing's amenities checklist, then message the host with any must-haves before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hart%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options are popular for Hart RV rentals?
Popular Hart add-ons make trip prep effortless. Hosts commonly offer linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks, kayak or SUP add-ons, generator hours for off-grid use, and propane top-offs, all priced transparently on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's driveway in or near Hart, Mears, or Pentwater, and many hosts will deliver to Silver Lake State Park or your private property for a per-mile fee. Mileage allowances vary by listing, with some offering unlimited miles for in-state travel. Build your add-on list at booking so everything is loaded and ready when you arrive, no last-minute scrambling.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hart%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when your booking is confirmed, and you never need to hand cash or checks to the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released back to you after dropoff, assuming the rig comes back in the same shape it left. The security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment. To avoid hold-ups, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's mileage and dumping policies, and refuel to the agreed level before you return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for making the most of Silver Lake Sand Dunes?
Here's the move locals swear by: drive south of Silver Lake to Little Sable Point Lighthouse for sunset. It's one of the only Lake Michigan lighthouses you can actually climb (seasonally, via the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association), and the beach below is far less crowded than the main Silver Lake State Park beach. Pair it with a morning ORV scramble (rent a dune buggy locally if your RV rental doesn't tow your own), an afternoon at Country Dairy in nearby New Era for fresh ice cream, and a stop at a Hart-area cider mill in fall. That's the Hart trifecta no first-timer should miss.
