Campgrounds and RV parks near Lewiston, MI

Water activity dominates warm-weather trips. Canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and rowboats are available to rent at the Clear Lake State Park contact station, and the park has a designated swim beach and boat launch. Big Bear Pointe State Forest offers a boat launch on Big Bear Lake and connects to the Big Bear ORV Trail system. Anglers target panfish, bass, pike, and stocked trout and splake in area lakes. Clear Lake State Park is one of just a few state parks that allow the operation of an ORV between the campground and nearby ORV trails, with access to the Atlanta ORV route and the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail from an ORV trailhead parking lot across from the contact station. In winter, groomed snowmobile trails run through the region, and ice fishing is common on local lakes.

The main RV season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, when Clear Lake State Park's contact station is staffed daily and lake activity peaks. Summer weekends fill quickly at the state park, and holiday weekends often sell out months in advance. Weekdays and shoulder-season trips in late May or September are noticeably quieter. Fall brings color through the hardwoods, cooler nights, and fewer bugs. Firearm deer season in mid-November draws hunters to the surrounding state forest and shifts demand toward hunt-oriented sites. Winter is active in this part of Michigan because of heavy lake-effect and system snowfall; Clear Lake State Park is open year-round, making it one of the few Michigan state parks available for winter camping, and Sno-Trac Camper Village caters specifically to snowmobilers. Spring is the slowest window. Rustic state forest campgrounds typically open once conditions allow, ground can stay soft into May, and biting insects arrive by late spring.

Private parks around Lewiston generally provide full hookups, laundry, shaded pull-through sites, and rig lengths that accommodate larger trailers and motorhomes. Lewiston Shady Acres Campground and Sno-Trac Camper Village serve both summer and snowmobile-season guests. Clear Lake State Park offers diverse camping options with both upper and lower camping areas. The upper area features larger sites with more space, ideal for bigger RVs and trailers. The lower area is closer to the lake. All sites include electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits, and some sites offer 50-amp service, with a sanitation station, toilet and shower building on-site. There are no water hookups at individual sites, but spring-fed water spigots are available throughout the campground. Rustic state forest campgrounds are basic by design: vault toilets, a hand-pump well for drinking water, no electricity, and sites suited to tents and small-to-mid-sized trailers. Cell coverage in the surrounding forest can be spotty, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town.
