Camping near Ossineke, Michigan
Ossineke is an unincorporated community in Sanborn Township, Alpena County, on the northeast Michigan coast of Lake Huron along US-23. The area sits about 15 miles south of Alpena and serves as a low-traffic base for exploring the Sunrise Coast, Thunder Bay, and the undeveloped shoreline of Negwegon State Park just south of town.
Campground options within a short drive cover the full range of RV needs. Campers Cove RV and Campground offers full-hookup sites on the Thunder Bay River and Lake Wynah northwest of Alpena, while Harrisville State Park provides a modern lakefront campground roughly 30 miles south. For simpler stays, Alpena County Fairgrounds handles RV and trailer sites along the Thunder Bay River, and Long Lake Park and Beaver Lake Park round out inland lake camping with boat access under the Alpena County Parks system.
Distances are short, roads are paved, and most sites are reachable by any Class A, Class C, or travel-trailer rental without difficulty.
Things to do around Ossineke
Lake Huron drives most trip planning. The shoreline near Ossineke has sand beaches, shallow swimming water in summer, and carry-in kayak access. Fishing is a core draw: walleye, bass, pike, and perch are common in the Thunder Bay River system, and smallmouth bass and trout are caught in nearby rivers.
Families typically pair camping with the Dinosaur Gardens attraction in Ossineke, the Alpena Wildfowl Sanctuary along the Thunder Bay River, and Sturgeon Point Lighthouse south of Harrisville. Divers and snorkelers head to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to visit shipwrecks, and paddlers can pick up water-trail segments along the Lake Huron shoreline. Off-road riders can reach the Black Mountain ORV area within a short drive.
Hiking is straightforward rather than dramatic, with rustic forest loops and short lakefront paths at Harrisville State Park and the county parks.

Expect a mix of modern and rustic. Harrisville State Park has 195 sites, a modern bathhouse with showers, a sanitation station, and electric hookups, plus two mini-cabins. Campers Cove runs full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, a dump station, LP gas, laundry, an indoor heated pool, and a camp store. The Alpena County parks offer modern campsites with lake access, and Beaver Lake Park has a rentable A-frame cabin.
