Campgrounds and RV parks near Rothbury, MI

Silver Lake State Park anchors most trip plans, with nearly three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, close to 2,000 acres of sand dunes, an inland day-use area on Silver Lake, and a 450-acre ORV area that is the only motorized sand-dune riding opportunity east of the Mississippi River. Visitors can bring their own ORVs or rent from permitted local businesses, and Mac Wood's Dune Rides runs a 40-minute interpretive dune tour. Closer to the village, Double JJ Resort operates an indoor and outdoor water park, dining, and golf, which is useful on rainy days or with younger kids. The paved William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail runs about 22 miles, linking Rothbury with Shelby to the north and Montague to the south, and works well for family biking from campgrounds like Holiday Camping Resort or Oak Knoll Family Campground. Two-thirds of the dunes are pedestrian-only for hikers, and the Little Sable Point Lighthouse sits at the southern end of the park.

The main RV season runs from mid-May through mid-October. The best window for comfortable weather in Rothbury is mid-May through September, and this is when private parks like Double JJ Resort, White River RV Park and Campground, and Oak Knoll Family Campground operate full amenities and activity programs. Summer weekends, especially around the Fourth of July and the Electric Forest music festival at Double JJ Resort, produce the tightest availability of the year and the heaviest traffic on roads leading to Silver Lake. Shoulder-season trips in late May, early June, and September are usually quieter, cooler, and easier to book, and they still line up with dune access and Lake Michigan beach days. The Silver Lake ORV season itself runs from April through October. Winter is a different trip entirely. Most private RV parks close for the season, while Silver Lake State Park shifts to a shoreline horseback riding season from November 1 to 30 and a fat-tire bike season at the ORV area from December 15 to March 15. Snowfall along the lakeshore is heavy due to lake-effect off Lake Michigan.

Expect a mix of wooded family parks and open, resort-style properties. Silver Lake State Park's modern campground has 200 sites with 20- or 30-amp electric service, most of them in shade, with sites 1 to 13 sitting directly on inland Silver Lake. Private parks near Rothbury typically offer full hookups, laundry, pools or water features, and organized weekend activities aimed at families. Roads in and around the village are two-lane and generally easy for standard rental RVs, though the sand-dune ORV area itself is closed to non-ORV vehicles. Plan for busy check-ins on Fridays in July and August. The Silver Lake ORV Area is very popular on weekends, and reviewing the entry process, voucher system, and specific rules ahead of time is recommended. Cell coverage is generally reliable in the village and thins out inside heavier forest cover and along the dunes.
