Campgrounds near Stephenson, Michigan
Stephenson sits in Menominee County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, roughly between the cities of Menominee and Escanaba. The area is rural and forested, framed by the Menominee River to the west (the Michigan and Wisconsin border) and the Green Bay shore of Lake Michigan to the east. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for lake and river recreation without the crowds of larger UP destinations.
Camping options near Stephenson range from full-service private parks to a large state park on Lake Michigan. J.W. Wells State Park sits along 3 miles of Lake Michigan's Green Bay, about 30 miles south of Escanaba, and its 700 acres include a modern campground, a designated swim beach, a picnic area, rustic cabins and a trail with three warming shelters. Closer to town, Coyote RV Park and Campground, Chalk Hills Campground, Evergreen Park & Campground, and Timberline Resort and Campground offer a mix of hookup sites and wooded settings.
US-41 runs directly through Stephenson and links the area to the Menominee waterfront, the Wisconsin border, and points north toward Escanaba, while M-35 follows the shoreline to J.W. Wells.
Things to do near Stephenson
Water recreation drives most trips. Anglers fish Green Bay for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and panfish, and the three-mile shoreline at J.W. Wells State Park offers ample space to cast a line. The Menominee River, west of town, is used for paddling, smallmouth fishing, and shore access from riverside county parks.
On land, J.W. Wells has a trail system with three rustic warming shelters that is used for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The modern campground is known for its family-friendly atmosphere thanks to an accessible playground and seasonal nature programming. Day trips include the DeYoung Family Zoo near Wallace, small-town dining in Menominee and Escanaba, and border crossings to Marinette, Wisconsin for shopping and restaurants.

The practical RV season in this part of the Upper Peninsula runs from spring through mid-fall. The J.W. Wells modern campground is closed from November through April, and the busiest stretch runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures, active seasonal programming at the state park, and the highest demand for waterfront sites.
Spring is cool and wet, and biting insects peak in late May and June near wooded and river sites. Fall brings color through late September and early October, cooler nights, and thinner crowds, which is a good window for anglers and travelers who want quieter loops.
Winter is severe. Campground services shut down and RV camping opportunities are limited due to harsh Upper Peninsula conditions. J.W. Wells State Park itself remains open year-round for day use even when the modern campground is closed, with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on ungroomed trails, and its rustic cabins are available for rent year-round.
How to book a campsite
Reservation systems vary by operator. For J.W. Wells State Park, reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Michigan state park campsites open on a rolling six-month window at 8 a.m. Eastern, so lakefront loops for summer weekends should be booked as soon as the window opens.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds and state trail parking. Private parks such as Coyote RV Park and Campground, Chalk Hills Campground, Evergreen Park & Campground, and Timberline Resort and Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites.
Most campgrounds in the area require reservations for summer weekends and holidays.
What to expect on arrival
At J.W. Wells, check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. Central and checkout is 1 p.m. Central, with quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Menominee County is one of the four western Upper Peninsula counties on Central Time even though most of Michigan is on Eastern, so confirm the time zone before planning a drive.
Sites at Wells are mostly flat and often within view of Lake Michigan. The campground has 30- or 50-amp electrical service on each site along with a sanitation station and shared water spigots rather than per-site water and sewer hookups. Confirm site dimensions before booking a large rig.
Cell service is generally usable near town and along US-41 but drops off at inland county parks and river sites. Bring cash for firewood at smaller parks, and buy firewood locally, since hauling firewood even a short distance is a common way for invasive tree pests to spread.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Stephenson, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Stephenson, MI?
RV rental in Stephenson is one of the most affordable ways to experience Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Travel trailers typically start around $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes run $225 to $400 per night, depending on age and amenities. Booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and during the shoulder seasons of late May or September often unlocks the cheapest RV rental Stephenson has to offer. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings on RVezy and message multiple hosts about weekly discounts. With Stephenson sitting right on US-41 between Menominee and Escanaba, you can split fuel costs by basing yourself here instead of pricier Door County or Mackinac.
michigan.org/city/stephensonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Stephenson, Michigan?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Stephenson for virtually every rig on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or special endorsement for non-commercial motorhomes, which covers nearly every Class A, Class B campervan, Class C, travel trailer, and fifth wheel listed on the platform. RVezy's approved driver requirements ask renters to be 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified securely during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home country license before you fly into Delta County Airport (ESC), about 45 minutes north in Escanaba, and you are set to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance is included with my Stephenson RV rental?
Every RV rental in Stephenson booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit US-41 with confidence. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat heading to J.W. Wells State Park or your battery dies at Shakey Lakes, one call to the RVezy roadside team gets help dispatched to your location, including towing, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Combined with your host's pickup walkthrough, this eliminates the two biggest first-timer worries before you turn the key. Review full coverage details on RVezy's protection page before booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Stephenson RV rental?
You can book your Stephenson RV trip with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the marketplace, not the individual host. Every booking includes a grace period for a full refund shortly after you reserve, with additional refund tiers based on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy provides a full refund or rebooking credit so your trip plans stay protected. For exact timelines and refund tiers, review the cancellation policy on your booking confirmation or in the RVezy Help Center before you book. That flexibility means locking in a great pet-friendly RV rental in Stephenson early carries almost no downside.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Stephenson RV trip?
Absolutely, and Stephenson is paradise for four-legged co-pilots. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Stephenson, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host about any breed or size notes. Once you're here, your pup will love the wooded trails and sandy Green Bay shoreline at J.W. Wells State Park, where leashed pets are welcome throughout the campground and most day-use areas. Shakey Lakes Park and Fox Park also allow leashed dogs at their campsites. Pro tip: pack a tick remover and check your dog after hikes, since the southern UP woods are prime tick habitat from May through October. The Menominee River has shallow shoreline spots that are perfect for water-loving breeds.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/jw-wellsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Stephenson?
Yes, RV delivery Stephenson hosts often offer is the secret weapon for first-time renters. Many owners will tow or drive the RV directly to Coyote RV Park, J.W. Wells State Park, Shakey Lakes Park, or even a private cabin driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you never have to back a 30-foot trailer down a forest road or figure out the propane on your own. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's home base, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campground name and dates to confirm.
michigan.org/city/stephensonHow far can I drive on a Stephenson RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
Plenty of Stephenson hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, especially on travel trailers, which is ideal because the UP rewards exploration. From Stephenson you're 22 miles south to Menominee, 35 miles north to Escanaba, 90 miles to Green Bay, WI, 150 miles to Door County's Peninsula State Park, and roughly 200 miles to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising. Hosts who set a mileage cap usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night with a small per-mile fee after that (typically $0.30 to $0.45). Check the listing's mileage policy before booking and message the host with your planned route. Pro tip: if you're chasing waterfalls or driving to Tahquamenon, an unlimited-mileage listing pays for itself fast.
michigan.org/article/trip-idea/things-do-upper-peninsula-your-ultimate-bucket-listWhere should I camp during my Stephenson RV trip?
You have several excellent options for RV camping Stephenson travelers love. Coyote RV Park & Campground on County Road G-12 has 50 sites with 50-amp electric, water, and pull-throughs that fit rigs up to 70 feet, just one mile from town. J.W. Wells State Park, 15 miles north on M-35, offers 150+ modern sites right on Green Bay with sandy beach access. Shakey Lakes Park, about 11 miles west, has 103 mostly rustic sites perfect for a quiet weekend on Bass Lake. Fox Park, a small county-run spot on M-35, is a budget-friendly Lake Michigan beach option. Pro tip: J.W. Wells fills up fast for July and August weekends, so reserve six months out.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/jw-wellsWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Stephenson?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Stephenson, with daytime highs of 70 to 80°F, warm enough for swimming at Cedar River beaches, and long Upper Peninsula daylight stretching past 9 PM in midsummer. May and early June bring fewer crowds and stunning trillium blooms but also black flies, so pack bug spray. Late September into early October delivers gorgeous fall color along M-35 with crisp 50 to 65°F days, ideal for hiking. Winters are genuinely cold here (lows of 5 to 15°F and heavy lake-effect snow), so summer through early fall is when most hosts list. Pro tip: book July and August trips by February to lock in the best motorhome rental Stephenson inventory.
weather.gov/mqt/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Stephenson?
First time renting an RV? Stephenson is honestly one of the easiest places in the country to learn. US-41 is a flat, straight, four-lane corridor with wide shoulders, light traffic outside of summer weekends, and clearly marked county roads. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering brakes, mirrors, hookups, the propane stove, the water pump, and dumping the tanks, and most hosts share a phone number for questions during your trip. Stick with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first booking, both easy to park at J.W. Wells State Park's pull-through sites. Pro tip: do a 15-minute loop around the quiet roads near Daggett before heading to your campground to build confidence.
michigan.gov/sos/all-services/driver-educationWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Stephenson booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing when needed. The remote stretches of US-2 and M-35 in the UP do have spotty cell service, so download offline Google Maps before you leave and note that coverage is strongest along US-41. Your host is also a great first call for quick fixes like resetting the generator or troubleshooting the water heater. For real emergencies, dial 911; the Menominee County Sheriff's Office covers the Stephenson area. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of your RV's make, model, and VIN before pulling away from pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Stephenson RV rental across the Wisconsin border or into Canada?
You bet, an RV road trip from Stephenson naturally crosses into Wisconsin, since the state line is just 22 miles south at the Menominee River bridge into Marinette. Most RVezy hosts allow Wisconsin travel automatically, so Door County, Green Bay, and the Northwoods are all fair game. Crossing into Canada via the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge (about 4.5 hours northeast) requires the host's written approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage, so always message the host before booking and bring a valid passport or NEXUS card. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: a 3-day Stephenson to Door County to Green Bay loop is the easiest cross-border first trip.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Stephenson RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your RV budget, so let's get specific. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 MPG, a Class A gets 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 10 to 14 MPG. With Michigan UP gas prices typically running $3.20 to $3.70 per gallon at the Holiday and BP stations along US-41 in Stephenson and Menominee, a 300-mile weekend loop to Pictured Rocks and back will cost roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: gas is usually 15 to 25 cents cheaper in Marinette, WI just across the bridge, so top off there before heading north. Diesel runs about 30 cents higher than regular unleaded in this region.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Stephenson?
For the best campgrounds near Stephenson, lead time matters. J.W. Wells State Park reservations open six months in advance through the Michigan DNR's MiDNRReservations system, and prime July and August weekend sites are typically gone within 24 hours of opening. Coyote RV Park accepts direct phone reservations and usually has midweek openings two to four weeks out. Shakey Lakes Park (a Menominee County park) takes reservations starting in early spring. For a holiday weekend like the Fourth of July, book everything by January or February. Pro tip: if you strike out at J.W. Wells, check Fox Park or grab a private site at Coyote, then day-trip to the state park beach, which is open to all visitors with a Michigan Recreation Passport.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like in and around Stephenson?
Driving an RV around Stephenson is refreshingly straightforward. US-41 and M-35 are flat, well-maintained two- to four-lane highways with minimal grade changes and almost no urban congestion. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, especially November during the rut; the UP averages high deer-collision rates, so slow down at twilight on rural county roads. Summer construction season runs May through October, so check Mi Drive before you depart. If you're visiting in shoulder season, fog rolls off Green Bay in early morning along M-35 near Cedar River. Winter trips bring genuine lake-effect snow and ice, so most hosts pause winter listings. Pro tip: stay in the right lane on US-41 hills near Powers to keep traffic flowing.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Stephenson?
Stephenson-area campgrounds run the full spectrum, so you can match your RV to the right park. Coyote RV Park offers 50-amp full hookups (water, electric, sewer at select sites), a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. J.W. Wells State Park has modern sites with 30/50-amp electric and water, a centralized dump station, and flush restrooms with showers, but no individual sewer hookups. Shakey Lakes and Fox Park are mostly rustic with vault toilets, hand-pump water, and no electric. For dumping and water fills between trips, Coyote RV Park welcomes non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 50-to-30-amp dogbone adapter and at least 25 feet of fresh-water hose; older state park sites can be a stretch from your rig.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/jw-wellsWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Stephenson?
Stephenson RV rentals come fully equipped for a comfortable UP getaway. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or sofa-bed, full kitchen with three-burner propane stove, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, sink with hot and cold water, and a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower. Most Class C motorhomes sleep four to six with seatbelts for everyone driving, and many include a roof AC, furnace, propane generator, and a 12-volt TV. Wi-Fi is sometimes included via a host's mobile hotspot, but UP cell service is spotty, so plan for a digital-detox bonus. Pro tip: ask your host whether kitchen essentials (pots, plates, coffee maker) and bedding are included or available as an add-on; many Stephenson hosts include them free.
michigan.org/article/trip-idea/things-do-upper-peninsula-your-ultimate-bucket-listWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a Stephenson RV rental?
Stephenson hosts offer flexible options to customize your trip. Common add-ons include kitchen kits ($25 to $50 flat), linen and towel packages ($15 to $30 per person), portable propane fire pits (great because most UP state parks restrict ground fires during dry spells), bike racks, generators, and folding camp chairs. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Stephenson, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough to cover every system. Many hosts also offer paid delivery to Coyote RV Park, J.W. Wells State Park, or as far as Marinette and Escanaba. Mileage policies vary; some are unlimited, others include 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: book add-ons when you reserve rather than at pickup to guarantee availability.
michigan.org/city/stephensonHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Stephenson RV rental?
Booking a campervan rental in Stephenson is as simple as any online reservation. You pay securely through RVezy by credit card at checkout, with no cash handed to the host. Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value) that is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after return, assuming no damage or policy violations. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel level, and follow the host's dumping and cleaning instructions. Pro tip: review the listing's cleaning and dump fees up front so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cold-weather or winter RV rentals available in Stephenson?
Winter RV travel in Stephenson is genuinely possible but takes the right rig. The UP gets serious cold (January lows averaging 5 to 15°F with 50+ inches of annual snow), so look specifically for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, dual-pane windows, and a strong propane furnace; filter by these features and message hosts directly to confirm winter availability. Many Stephenson owners pause listings November through April, so book early if you want a snowmobiling or ice-fishing basecamp near the Forest Islands ATV/snowmobile trail system or Shakey Lake. Plan for shore-power campgrounds (not all stay open year-round) and bring a heated water hose. Pro tip: a winter trip pairs perfectly with watching the northern lights, which are visible from dark-sky spots along Lake Michigan when KP index is high.
