Campgrounds and RV parks near Auxvasse, MO

Graham Cave State Park is the headline attraction. The park protects a sandstone rock shelter that has yielded evidence of human occupation dating back roughly 10,000 years, and interpretive exhibits along the trail to the cave explain its Dalton and Archaic-period discoveries. The cave mouth itself is fenced to protect the site, but visitors can walk right up to it. Hikers can add the Loutre River Trail, Fern Ridge Trail, and Indian Glade Trail, and a boat ramp on the Loutre River provides fishing and paddling access to catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie waters. Columbia, about 30 minutes west, adds the University of Missouri campus, Stephens Lake Park, and access to the Katy Trail State Park, one of the longest rail-trails in the country. Wineries in the Hermann area to the south are within an easy day trip.

Central Missouri has four distinct seasons and a humid, storm-prone warm season. Summers are hot and humid, with July and August daytime highs typically in the upper 80s Fahrenheit and thunderstorms common. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, and rain can make dirt access roads and unpaved pads soft. Spring is also the peak tornado season in Missouri. Fall is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel: mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity, with October foliage across the oak-hickory forests. Winters are cold but not extreme, with occasional snow and freezing rain from December through February. Reservations for Missouri State Parks, including Graham Cave, are accepted up to twelve months in advance, and reservable sites are offered April 1 through October 31. During the off-season from November through March, all campsites at Graham Cave revert to first-come, first-served, water and showers are shut off, and campers must bring their own potable water.

At Graham Cave State Park, campsites are set in a heavily wooded loop above the Loutre River, with a mix of basic and electric sites offering 30-amp service. Facilities include modern restrooms, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station during the on-season from April through October. There are no water hookups at individual sites, drinking-water spigots are located at a couple of shared taps, some pads require leveling blocks, and the park accommodates RVs up to about 35 feet. Interstate 70 is close by, so some road noise carries into the campground. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, though access roads and pads are often gravel. Cell service varies by carrier across the rural stretches around Auxvasse.
