St. Joe State Park has two nicely shaded campgrounds with distinct character and amenities. Campground 2 serves equestrian campers and those without ORVs, featuring electric and basic sites with hitching posts at each site. Campground 1 is situated near the ORV riding area and offers sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric hookups. A short drive north, St. Francois State Park Campground sits in the forested ridges and cool hollows of the Missouri Ozarks near Bonne Terre, offering 110 campsites with a variety of configurations, and features trails for hiking and horseback riding plus fishing on the Big River.
Elephant Rocks State Park is a popular day-use stop in the same area, but camping is not available on site; nearby state parks offer tent, RV, and cabin camping options. Private options such as Cherokee Landing and Stone Park Resort and Amphitheatre round out the local mix.
Things to do near Bismarck
The signature attraction is Elephant Rocks State Park, where giant granite boulders stand end-to-end like a train of circus elephants. A short, paved loop makes it a straightforward stop with kids and an easy add-on to any camping trip in the area.
St. Joe State Park adds off-road riding, paved bike paths, and lakes. Off-road vehicle enthusiasts find over 2,000 acres of trails to ride on, making it a popular spot for dirt bikers and ATV riders, and four lakes extend the fun to the water for fishing, boating, and swimming. St. Francois State Park is the pick for river time: the park provides easy access to the Big River for canoeing, floating, and fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, with three hiking trails winding through the wooded hills and glades of the Coonville Creek Wild Area, plus a backpack camp on the Pike Run Trail.

At St. Francois State Park, water is not available in the park during the off-season (November through March), and at St. Joe State Park the restrooms and water hookups are only available from April 1 through October 31. Plan cold-weather trips with onboard water.
Spring and fall are special times to hit the trails, as wildflowers blossom in the spring and as the hills erupt in color on crisp fall days. Along the Big River corridor, the park experiences occasional flash flooding, and campers must have a means to evacuate while staying.
Summer is peak season. Summer is a popular time to visit the park, as the river waters are warm enough for comfortable swimming, and the weather is generally hot and humid this time of year. Fall offers cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and more reliable weekend availability outside major holidays, though weekend two-night minimums still apply at St. Joe.
How to book campgrounds near Bismarck
Missouri State Parks handles reservations for St. Joe and St. Francois through a single system. Campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, expanding from the previous six-month window, either through the reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766).
Weekend rules matter for trip planning. A minimum stay of two nights is required for weekend reservations at Big Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, St. Joe, Mark Twain, Wakonda, Wallace and Watkins Mill state parks. The two-night minimum must be Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday. The cancellation of one night of a two-night minimum stay is not allowed.
Walk-ups are possible when sites go unclaimed. The campground is fully reservable, and reservable sites may be available on a walk-up registration basis if the site is not reserved. Private parks such as Cherokee Landing and Stone Park Resort and Amphitheatre are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect on site
