Camping near Imperial, Missouri
Imperial sits in Jefferson County about 22 miles south of downtown St. Louis, just off I-55. The town is best known as the home of Mastodon State Historic Site, a 431-acre park preserving the Kimmswick Bone Bed, where a Clovis-culture stone spear point was excavated in direct association with mastodon bones in 1979. That heritage, combined with easy interstate access, makes the area a practical base for RV travelers exploring the St. Louis metro and the Mississippi River corridor.
RV travelers typically choose between private full-hookup parks close to Imperial and destination resorts a short drive away. Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage and Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates serve travelers who want a quiet overnight or extended stay near town. Cahokia RV Parque sits across the river in Illinois near the Cahokia Mounds area, while St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort offer family-oriented amenities on the west side of the metro.
Mastodon State Historic Site itself has only a small special-use tent camping area with no electricity, so RVers generally stay at private parks nearby and visit the historic site by day.
Things to do near Imperial
Mastodon State Historic Site is the local anchor. Visitors tour the museum, which centers on a full-size mastodon skeleton replica, and walk the Limestone Hill, Spring Branch, and Wildflower trails toward the Kimmswick Bone Bed area. The nearby village of Kimmswick has restaurants, shops, and seasonal festivals along the Mississippi.
Downtown St. Louis is a short drive north via I-55, putting the Gateway Arch, City Museum, Forest Park, and the Saint Louis Zoo within easy reach for a day trip. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, across the river in Illinois, preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico.
Big River and Meramec River access points support paddling and fishing, and state parks such as St. Francois and Washington offer longer hikes within about an hour's drive.

Imperial has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring brings the region's heaviest rainfall and the highest risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, with May typically the wettest month. Trails can be muddy, but wildflowers along the Tom Stockwell Wildflower Trail peak from April into early June.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs often near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent thunderstorms. It is the busiest season for family camping, and full-hookup sites at private parks around St. Louis book weeks ahead for July 4 and other holiday weekends. Shaded sites and air-conditioned rigs make a real difference in July and August.
Fall is generally the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter is cold, with occasional snow and ice; some private parks scale back services or close bathhouses, and the Mastodon site's tent camping area is not a winter option, though the museum and trails stay open year-round in daylight hours.

How to book near Imperial
Private parks near Imperial, including Covered Bridge RV Park and Storage, Belleville Mobile Home and RV Estates, Cahokia RV Parque, St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA and Jellystone properties also allow booking through their national platforms and loyalty programs.
Missouri State Parks and historic sites, including Mastodon, use the state system at icampmo.com or 877-ICampMo (422-6766), and reservations may be made beginning 12 months in advance up until 7 p.m. Central Time the day prior to arrival. Holiday weekends and October color weekends fill fastest at popular state parks, so booking well ahead is smart.
What to expect on-site
Most private RV parks in the Imperial and greater St. Louis area offer paved or gravel pull-through and back-in sites with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Amenities vary: KOA Holiday and Jellystone properties typically include pools, playgrounds, cabins, and organized weekend activities aimed at families, while smaller parks focus on quiet, no-frills stays.
Come prepared for humidity, biting insects in warm months, and occasional strong thunderstorms; a surge protector with EMS is a sensible precaution. Trails around Mastodon can be steep and rocky in spots, and ticks are common from spring through early fall.
Cell coverage is generally strong along the I-55 corridor. Groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are easy to find in Arnold and along US-61/67, just north of Imperial.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Imperial, MO
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Imperial, MO?
Good news for budget travelers: RV rental in Imperial, MO is one of the more affordable ways to explore the St. Louis region. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, while Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes can range from $250 to $400 nightly. Hosts set their own pricing, mileage policies, and add-ons, so you'll see plenty of variety on each listing. For a cheap RV rental in Imperial, book midweek in spring or fall, look for travel trailers with delivery included, and use the price filter to set your max. Pro tip: many Jefferson County hosts offer weekly discounts that make a 7-day Ozarks trip noticeably cheaper than two separate weekend rentals.
visitmo.com/things-to-do/outdoors/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Imperial, MO?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Imperial, MO. Missouri's standard Class F license covers personal RV use regardless of size, so you can drive a Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, or tow a travel trailer with no special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License required. To book on RVezy, you need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you confirm your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set. Most first-time renters in Jefferson County are surprised how quick the pickup process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Imperial RV rental?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book on RVezy. Every rent an RV in Imperial booking automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you drive off. RVezy offers multiple protection plan tiers, and you (not the host) choose your coverage level during checkout based on how much extra cushion you want. If you get a flat on Interstate 55 heading toward Ste. Genevieve or need a battery jump at Mastodon State Historic Site, one phone call gets help dispatched. Book with confidence knowing the safety net is already built in.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Imperial RV rental?
You can book your Imperial RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the policy that applies to your booking is shown during checkout and in your trip confirmation. Refund amounts depend on how close to your trip start date you cancel, so the sooner you decide, the more flexibility you have. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. That is especially reassuring in eastern Missouri, where spring thunderstorms or river flooding along the Mississippi can occasionally change plans. RVezy support is available if your situation changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Imperial, MO?
Absolutely, and Jefferson County is a fantastic place to travel with pets. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Imperial, just check the Pet-Friendly filter when you search RVezy and message the host to share your dog's size and breed. Many hosts welcome pets for a small cleaning fee. Once you're rolling, you'll have great options nearby: dogs are welcome on leash at Mastodon State Historic Site's trails, at Cliff Cave County Park, and at most loops in Washington State Park about 45 minutes south. The Katy Trail State Park, reachable in about an hour, is one of the best long-distance dog-friendly walks in the Midwest. Pack a tie-out, a water bowl, and your dog's vaccination records and you're road-trip ready.
mostateparks.com/page/55072/pets-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Imperial?
Yes, RV delivery in Imperial is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're new to RVing. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your driveway, a campground like Pin Oak Creek RV Park, or even St. Louis West/Historic Route 66 KOA in Eureka, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing in, and no figuring out the propane regulator alone. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer it, and check each listing for the delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: a delivered, set-up travel trailer at a state park is the easiest possible introduction to RV camping in Imperial.
mostateparks.com/park/mastodon-state-historic-siteHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive on an Imperial RV trip?
You have lots of room to roam. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll see exactly how many free miles per night are included on each listing, with extra miles available at a per-mile rate. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer Missouri road trips. From Imperial, you're well placed for adventure: downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch are about 25 miles north, Lake of the Ozarks is roughly 175 miles southwest, Mark Twain National Forest near Rolla is about 100 miles, Memphis sits 285 miles south, and Branson is around 240 miles. Pro tip: estimate your route in advance and pick a mileage package that fits, so you can focus on the drive, not the math.
modot.org/travelers-informationWhere are the best campgrounds near Imperial, MO?
You're surrounded by excellent options for RV camping in Imperial. Within a 45-minute drive you've got: Pin Oak Creek RV Park in Villa Ridge with 30- and 50-amp hookups and big-rig pull-throughs; St. Louis West/Historic Route 66 KOA in Eureka with a pool and family activities; Babler State Park near Wildwood with shaded electric sites and great hiking; Washington State Park to the south with hookups and the Big River nearby; and Robertsville State Park along the Meramec River for quieter, scenic camping. For something different, Cahokia RV Parque across the river in Illinois puts you minutes from the Cahokia Mounds. Pro tip: book Missouri State Parks campsites through icampmo.com up to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, they fill fast.
mostateparks.com/page/55041/find-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an Imperial, MO RV trip?
Imperial has one of the longest RV seasons in the Midwest, with campgrounds open roughly mid-March through late November and many private parks operating year-round. The sweet spot is mid-April through early June and mid-September through late October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range and humidity is low. July and August get hot and humid (often 88 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit), so look for an RV with strong air conditioning and shaded sites. Fall brings spectacular color along the Mississippi River bluffs and the Meramec. Winter rentals are possible too, with crisp 30 to 50 degree days, just confirm the RV has a furnace and the campground keeps water on. Shoulder seasons are also when cheap RV rental in Imperial deals are easiest to find.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually know what I'm doing?
Yes, you'll be ready, and you're not alone. First time renting an RV is one of the most common scenarios on RVezy, and every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, water, waste tanks, and the appliances. You can message the host with questions before you even book, and most are happy to chat by phone too. If anything feels confusing on the road, 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. For your first Imperial RV trip, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer at Mastodon State Historic Site, less driving stress, more relaxing. Most first-timers tell us the pickup walkthrough was the moment everything clicked.
mostateparks.com/page/55041/find-state-parkWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 61, a dead battery at Pere Marquette across the river in Illinois, or an out-of-fuel moment heading down to the Ozarks is just a phone call away. Help is dispatched to your location, and RVezy support can coordinate with your host on anything mechanical. Before you leave the driveway, save the roadside number in your phone, take photos of the RV exterior, and ask your host where the spare tire, fuses, and breaker panel are during the walkthrough. With a backup plan baked in, one phone call solves almost any roadside problem.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Imperial RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are not only allowed but encouraged. From Imperial you can easily cross into Illinois (the bridge is 20 minutes away), head south to Arkansas and Tennessee, or roll west through Kansas and Oklahoma. A popular RV road trip from Imperial is the Great River Road following the Mississippi south to Memphis, or northwest along Route 66 toward Springfield. Canada travel may be allowed depending on the host and protection package, so message the host directly before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: tell your host your full route in advance so they can advise on mileage, fuel stops, and any restrictions.
modot.org/missouri-state-highway-systemWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget for gas?
Easy to plan for. Most RVs in the Imperial area run on regular unleaded gasoline, with a few diesel pushers in the mix. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C, 16 to 20 for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 18 for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Missouri gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often around $2.90 to $3.40 per gallon along Interstate 55. For a 300-mile loop to the Lake of the Ozarks and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Pevely or Festus before heading south, prices are often lower than at lake-area stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campsite near Imperial?
Plan ahead and you'll snag the best spots. Missouri State Parks (including Washington, Robertsville, and Babler near Imperial) accept reservations through icampmo.com up to six months in advance, and prime summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day often fill within days of opening. For private parks like Pin Oak Creek RV Park or St. Louis West KOA, 2 to 4 weeks out is usually enough except for July 4th and Labor Day weekends. Shoulder-season trips (April, May, September, October) often have same-week availability. Pro tip: if you strike out at a state park, check Hipcamp and Harvest Hosts for private farm and winery stays in the Ste. Genevieve wine country just 45 minutes south, you'll find surprisingly open weekends.
icampmo.com/What are the driving conditions like around Imperial?
Driving an RV around Imperial is very manageable, even for first-timers. Interstate 55 runs right through town and is the main artery north to St. Louis and south to Cape Girardeau, with wide lanes and reasonable grades. Highway 61 (the Great River Road) is a scenic two-lane alternative. Watch for two things: rush-hour traffic between Imperial and downtown St. Louis on weekday mornings and afternoons, and occasional flash flooding along Big River and Joachim Creek after heavy spring rain. The bluff country south of Kimmswick has some short, winding sections, take it slow and you'll be fine. Pro tip: avoid driving a tall Class A through downtown St. Louis during weekday rush hour, take Interstate 255 around the south side and rejoin Interstate 70 west of the city.
modot.org/travelers-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Imperial?
Most campgrounds in the Imperial area are well equipped for a comfortable stay. Private parks like Pin Oak Creek RV Park and St. Louis West/Historic Route 66 KOA offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Missouri State Parks such as Washington and Robertsville provide electric sites, shared water spigots, modern restrooms with showers, and on-site dump stations open during the camping season. For free dump and potable water on the road, several Pilot and Love's truck stops along Interstate 55 between Imperial and Cape Girardeau offer dump services for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host if the RV has a built-in fresh water tank topped off, that way you can boondock or stay at an electric-only site without a hookup hassle.
mostateparks.com/page/54995/campingWhat's actually inside a typical Imperial RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Imperial comes fully equipped to sleep, cook, and shower without ever leaving the rig. Class C motorhomes usually sleep 4 to 7 with a queen bed, cab-over bunk, and convertible dinette, and include a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator for boondocking. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts, just towed instead of driven. Campervan rental in Imperial (Class B) trades space for easy driving and better fuel economy. Each listing shows photos, sleep count, and amenity list so you can match the rig to your crew.
rvia.org/What add-ons and pickup options can I expect with my rental?
You can customize your trip a lot. Most Imperial hosts offer popular add-ons like camping chairs and tables, linens and bedding kits, kitchen packages, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayaks, portable grills, and pet packages, with prices typically ranging from $10 to $75 per item per trip. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Imperial, Arnold, House Springs, or nearby Jefferson County communities, and many hosts offer paid delivery to your campground. Standard mileage allowances run 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each, though some hosts include unlimited miles. Pro tip: bundle the linens and kitchen kit on your first rental, it saves a frantic Walmart run and you'll arrive at camp ready to relax.
visitmo.com/things-to-do/road-tripsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. You pay your rental total (nightly rate, service fee, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons) at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately a few days before your trip starts and released back to your card after the RV is returned in the same condition you received it. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the waste tanks (or pay the dump fee). Easy, transparent, and stress-free.
