Campgrounds and RV parks near Canton, MO

Water is the anchor. Wakonda State Park spreads across six former gravel-pit lakes stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish, with boat ramps on Wakonda and Agate lakes and the state park system's largest natural sand swim beach along Wakonda Lake. Idle-speed rules keep the lakes calm for kayaks and canoes, and johnboats and kayaks are available for rent at the park office from mid-April through October. On land, the park offers more than seven miles of interconnected trails that loop the lakes and pass a rare sand prairie. Birders come for large flocks of Canada geese, snow geese, mallards and herons during migration. Off-site, families drive to the Mississippi riverfront in Canton, tour nearby Hannibal for Mark Twain sites, or cross the river to Nauvoo, Illinois.

Both Boulder Lake and Wakonda Lake campgrounds at Wakonda State Park stay open year round, but reservations can only be booked April 15 through October 31, and water and shower buildings only operate during that same window. Outside the season, campers should plan for freezing temperatures and the possibility of frozen precipitation. Spring warms quickly but can be wet, with April through June carrying the heaviest average rainfall of the year. Summer brings the busiest weekends: sites in open prairie sections run hot with little shade, so RVs with working air conditioning have a clear advantage. The swim beach and lakes see peak use from June through August, and the beach on Wakonda Lake operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Fall is the shoulder season locals prefer, with cooler air and hardwood color peaking in October. Waterfowl migrations bring boating closures on Agate and Jasper lakes from November 1 to January 31 and again from February 15 to March 31.

At Wakonda State Park, Boulder Lake Campground offers 77 sites, 65 with electric and 12 basic, on pads ranging from about 25 to 109 feet, so most RV lengths fit if reserved early. Wakonda Lake Campground has 13 full-hookup sewer, electric and water sites along the shoreline, including two ADA-accessible sites. Every site includes a picnic table, fire ring and lantern post. There is a shower house, laundry and dump station serving the campgrounds, with a woodlot near the Boulder Lake entrance. Many sites at Wakonda Lake sit in open prairie with limited shade, which matters in July and August. Boulder Lake tends to have more shaded spots. Pets are allowed on leashes no longer than 10 feet.
