Campgrounds and RV parks near Clayton, MO

Forest Park anchors the local itinerary. It holds the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, and the Saint Louis Science Center, all with free general admission. The Gateway Arch and its riverfront museum sit a short drive east in downtown St. Louis, with tram rides to the top by timed ticket. Families often pair the city with outdoor stops. The Missouri Botanical Garden and Grant's Farm are within the metro, and Castlewood State Park and Route 66 State Park sit west along the Meramec River for hiking and paddling. Across the river in Illinois, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico and lies close to Cahokia RV Parque and the DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park property. Sundermeier RV Park sits adjacent to Katy Trail State Park for hiking and biking.

The St. Louis metro has a humid continental to humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Late April through mid-June and mid-September through late October are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Spring and autumn are unsettled seasons, with fairly frequent rains and sudden changes in temperature, and spring is rainier and more unstable than autumn. St. Louis is east of the heart of Tornado Alley and is one of the metropolitan areas most affected by tornadoes, which are more likely in spring but can also occur in autumn, so travelers should monitor National Weather Service alerts and plan flexible days. Summer is peak visitor season, driven by school breaks, Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium, and Forest Park programming. Expect highs in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Sites at the closer-in parks fill early on weekends and holidays. Winters are cold but not extreme. Snow and ice events do occur, and some amenities at seasonal parks close from late fall through March. Year-round parks like Sundermeier RV Park and the closer-in commercial properties remain the most reliable options in the off-season.

Clayton itself is urban and does not host RV parks, so plan on a drive of roughly fifteen to forty minutes from your site to downtown Clayton or Forest Park depending on which park you choose. Traffic on I-64, I-70, and I-170 backs up during weekday rush hours and around stadium events, so time arrivals accordingly. Most nearby parks offer full hookups, pull-through sites, Wi-Fi, and laundry, though tree cover and site width vary. Sundermeier offers 106 level concrete pads, 39 pull-throughs, true 30/50 amp electric service, and free Wi-Fi, while Cahokia RV Parque and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park sit on flat, open ground close to the river. Mosquitoes are active from late spring through early fall along the river bottoms, and summer storms can bring brief high winds, so secure awnings and outdoor gear before leaving your site.
